Apr. 7, 2008 - Updates

First, Joe seems to be fine.  Really, i can't tell that he is sick at all.  Then again, he didn't seem sick on Friday, but the x-rays that day definately showed he still had pneumonia.  I wish there was some way i could gauge it without x-rays.  I don't know what to make of it.  Yes, we do have an inhaler for him, but we haven't used it.  He hasn't had trouble breathing since Wednesday.  He's not even really coughing.

Joy is coughing, but hasn't had any fever so i just wonder if she has it, too.  I don't want to subject her to x-rays just for curiosity, so i'm just watching her.  She seems fine except for the cough.....it's mostly at night.  There is so much pollen in the air right now it could just be allergies, too.

.

We drove through the neighborhood near us that got hit by the tornado.  I've seen tornado damage before, but it is still so heart-wrenching to see it.  The house that some friends of ours used to live in did get hit, but not too bad compared to some of their neighbors.  Thankfully it was only an EF-1 or EF-2, so although it did destroy a number of homes, it didn't wipe a clean path where there is nothing left at all.  I've seen places where even the foundations of homes are gone.  This one mostly took off roofs and broke or uprooted large trees.  I am still completely amazed how one house can be utterly destroyed and the one right next door, like ten feet away, just has minor roof damage.  The damage from these things makes no sense to the human brain.

.

Someone asked me if we have a basement or shelter.  No, we don't.  Most homes in Arkansas do not have basements.  In the Northern part of the state there seems to be more.  I don't know why that is, maybe the water table is really high or it's the composition of our land.  I do know that those who have basements seem to battle with water damage and mold a lot.  I'd rather not have that problem myself.  Mold is year-round.  Tornadoes are fairly rare that they get close enough to seek shelter...maybe twice a year for us.

.

I would love to have a safe room or even a "fraidy hole" type of in-ground shelter.  I dream of building a home with a safe room that doubles as a second pantry and storage place for my photos and scrapbooks.  Maybe someday......

.

We tried out a new Mexican restaraunt in our town.  Woo-hooo!  It was good!  I am very excited that they have moved into the neighborhood.  The main problem i see is that they are too small!  They're gonna be packed in there.

.

This week we have two trips to the park scheduled, scouts, state testing is tomorrow for my oldest, i need to go get more goat milk (takes an hour), lots of cooking planned, yardwork, oh and they are predicting more tornadic storms for this Thursday.  ugh!  enough already.  I'm not sure we'll go on tomorrow's field trip since Joe is supposed to take it easy.  It is so hard to take it easy when one doesn't seem ill.  I really don't think he is contagious or anything like that.

.

My neighbor's baby is due, too, and i'm second in line to keep her boys when she goes into labor...so it's possible i'll have a couple extra little ones sometime, too.  Trish is really ready to have her baby...you might send up a prayer for her.

I'm glad he's feeling better. It is hard to keep a child still when they feel o.k. It sounds like a busy week for you. I hope you get the things done you want to, and that no tornadoes come by you this week. :)

It's so hard when kids are sick but don't feel sick. The great thing is they can bounce back quickly, but don't always understand the need for rest even when they feel well. I will definitely be praying for your kiddo's that are sick!
I was happy to hear that you weathered the tornado well. We don't often get tornados in WI but at least once or twice the siren will go off and we take the kids to the basement. Why does it always seem to be in the middle of the night? Hmm, anyway, thank the Lord we have never been hit. The kids are always a little worried though. Understandable! We try to remind them that God watches over us and protects us. We usually sing some hymns or praise songs. It never lasts long and then the kids go back to bed!
Anyway, very glad to hear your family is okay!

Joe needs to use his inhaler. The inhaler helps to break up the congestion in his lungs. He needs to be coughing. Not coughing is not good. Coughing gets the congestion out of his lungs. Coughing is what he needs to be doing. Whether he seems to need it or not he needs to use it as instucted. The doctor should have explained it to you. Hot showers (as hot as he will let it be) pounding on his back will also loosen up the phlem.
If he is still not coughing, you need to talk to his doctor about this. It would explain while the oxygen level hasn't changed inspite of his meds.
I love you and even posted a prayer request for Joe on my blog and at the Lounge.
