Jul. 22, 2008 - CQLA, Language Arts

We have been back to school for a few weeks now.  My how time flies!  We've had several diversions with the backyard project and now Grandma coming to visit, but we're plugging along.  We're about to finish our first month of CQLA, our new language arts program.

.

CQLA seems like a strange name for a curriculum.  What does it mean anyway?  It is an acronym for Character Quality Language Arts.  After seven years of homeschooling i have finally found the Language Arts curriculum that i love!  (Thanks JoAnn for the recommendation.)  Of course, i wouldn't start using CQLA until at least 2nd grade students, probably 3rd.  Joe is doing very well with it and he is in 3rd grade this year.   ANYHOW, i love that this program tells the kids exactly what they need to do and "holds their hands" so to speak.  I like the suggestions for extensions and the flexibility of the curriculum and the level at which i want my kids to work even within one week can be changed.

I LOVE that it uses copywork, dictation, the child's own writing, includes grammar from those things, has spelling built-in, and has an awesome checklist for the students to use to go through and check their own writing and improve it each week at the level they should be performing for that week including any new concepts.  My one beef is that the spelling is too easy for Joe at the Pre-A level, but i can easily adapt his spelling and continue to use SpellingCity.com.

.

I would highly recommend CQLA.  The Training for Triumph website even has a free one month download to take the curriculum for a spin before you buy.  Scroll down to the bottom of their home page to see the meat and potatoes.

I'm so glad you are liking it. We'll be 'officially' starting it next month. We just used the downloads before. I am looking forward to using it this year. I'm glad it's working for you. :)

Hey Lady,

We won't be back to school until after labor day since DH and I have and anniversary on Sept 4th.

I think I will check out that curriculum...never hurts to teach character.

Hugs,
Tirzah
