May. 21, 2009 - Show and Tell Friday....Dry Erase

I have a little obsession with dry erase boards and markers.  It has grown slowly over time, but now I use these little tools quite a bit.  It all started with the small board on the refrigerator.  We use it to write down things we need to remember or purchase.  My husband likes to write his to-do list on this one quite a bit.

Then I added a little sticky con-tac paper version of dry erase paper in a little square next to the first board.
I use this one to write down my menu for the week.  I tend to forget what I had planned for us to eat unless I write it down and keep it posted.

My next little experiment with dry erase markers led me to make my own board.  I got a 16 x 20 poster frame at a craft store and put some wrapping paper inside to create a background.  I use dry erase markers to write out verses that we are trying to memorize.  This hangs in our living room.  It takes some elbow grease to wipe it off, but I have found that rubbing alcohol cleans it off quickly and easily.

Recently I began using our old dry erase board to write out the day's lessons and chores.  I had tried writing these things on my own lesson plan sheet or sometimes I made up individual sheets for the boys to keep track of their assignments.  I won't go into the pros and cons of those methods, but I have found it very helpful for us to be literally "all on the same page" with our expectations of what needs to be accomplished each day.   A few weeks ago, my husband bought us a new dry erase board and it is huge.  It hangs on a wall between the kitchen and the garage door/laundry room.  A high traffic area to be sure.

At the top I list the subjects we do together:  History and/or Science.  I write out what lesson we are on and any projects we will do in those subjects.
Then I have a column for each boy.  Each subject is written out and what they are to accomplish for that day.  Below the subjects I write out their chores and any extra notes I have for them for the day.  If we have an outside activity that day or an appt., then I write that on the board, too.  I update the board each night.  This has really helped me to stay focused.  It has also really helped with communicating expectations with the boys.  It has proven to be a tremendous boon to our homeschool.

One more use for those markers is to write messages to your loved ones.  I especially do this on birthdays.  I'll go around the house and write the birthday person's name and/or age and little messages of love on windows and mirrors.  More recently my husband and I have been writing small love messages in "hidden" places with the markers...like a corner of the mirror or one of the boards.

And, of course, there is the traditional school use.  I still have my old board and the little ones love to write and draw on it.  I use it for lessons sometimes, too.

So, now you know.  I am a dry erase fanatic.

Thank you to Mary aka CanadaGirl, for hosting Show and Tell each week.

I really like dry erase boards too. I hadn't thought about writing our verse of the week on it, but that is a great idea.
I like to let my son write his spelling words on the board instead of on paper. It makes it seem less like "work." lol

I love your obscession! We used Dry erase boards too. The kids had their own personal size ones (like "Little House on the Prarie" slates). Since we were living in Florida at the time. We took them into the pool and did our school work in the water!

Yep, I love them too!

I love dry erase boards too. I just have one hanging on the fridge and that's where I write my bible verse that I want to focus on. Of course, there's limited space so that's good you found a big board. I am not sure if Mr. Clean eraser would scratch your poster board frame but I find it gets dry erase marker and permanent marker off of things very well.

I love the way you utilize your boards. I got some ideas from you that I may use next year. How cool that you made your own dry erase board!! - Karen

P.S. I giggled out loud at your note, "TAKE A SHOWER!"
