"It is only by introducing the young
to great literature, drama, and music,
and to the excitement
of great science,
that we open to them
the possibilities
that lie within the human spirit--
enable them to see visions

May. 27, 2009 - Snapshots
I thought I'd share a couple of snapshots from our day yesterday. Nothing special, just tidbits.
I made a fun lunch for the kids. It is extremely rare for me to ever make our lunch look visually appealing, much less cute. But, these recipes were in the latest issue of Clubhouse Jr. and some children that I know showed great interest in making them.
After our school and lunch time, we hit the state park for homeschool day. We learned about Arkansas' endangered animals. I even learned that a turtle actually does suffocate if you flip them over on their backs as their lungs get compressed that way. This fits well with our reading of Swiss Family Robinson as they often flipped turtles on their backs. I empathize with the poor turtle, though. These days, I feel like a flipped turtle if I dare lay on my back or get too comfy in the recliner.
Anyhow, we then hit the big downtown library and stocked up on books about Vikings. This should be a fun week of learning! While there amidst the thousands of books, Kade found a cowboy book and we had to check that out too. It is actually quite good. It's called Little Apaloosa. I added it to the LIttle Kids book list in the sidebar. Poor Joy was worn out after the day's adventures.
She tried to listen to the story, really. Thankfully, she did wake up for dinner and went to bed at her usual time.
So sweet! We are also reading Swiss Family Robinson. It is both an adventure into Old English and the great outdoors. You are looking great and nothing like a flipped turtle ;)
I'd be much like Joy after that day! And you move about well for your condition, too, Mom!
Sounds like great fun and I love the look of the sandwiches. My older two would think this is too hokey, but the youngest would be thrilled.
Thanks for writing me offline and, if it makes you feel any better, we have a roof that's ugly with blown off shingles from the hurricane last fall, and wood that needs replacing. It is always something, but the Lord shows us much grace.
I've enjoyed your blog for quite some time. I'm thinking of signing my boys up for scouting in the fall, but I have a few concerns I thought you might be able to help me with. I don't understand "Akela" and I don't understand enough to be comfortable letting my boys pledge loyalty (or whatever the pledge is) to the pack/Akela. Can you help me out? Being the mom, I've never been a boy scout myself ;). I like the whole concept of scouting, but I don't want to contradict/confuse their following of Christ.
