Oct. 2, 2009 - Show and Tell Friday.........Circle Time
Welcome to Show and Tell Friday, hosted by CanadaGirl!
This week I am sharing about our circle time. I just started circle time with my children this past month.
I am mostly doing circle time with my 5, 3, and 2 year olds right now, but I am planning to expand it to include my older students as well. They do listen in and learn a bit at this point, anyway.
We start our time with our calendar. I will pull out the number to add for that day and ask Kade, "what number is this?" He still has some trouble with the teens and twenties, but he's starting to get it.
We add the number to the calendar and go up the column to see what day of the week it is. Then we sing the "seven days of the week" song.
Next, we'll look at the calendar again and say, "Today is Friday October the 2nd" and point at each component. Then we review the months of the year and sing the song that goes with that.
I am using this time to try to teach them when their birthdays are. So I ask both Kade and Joy, "when is your birthday?" I still have to tell them and have them repeat.
Then we do our weather chart and change those cards as needed.
After this we review famous landmarks that we are learning. I found flashcards of landmarks at Target in the dollar spot this summer.
I introduce a new landmark when they have memorized the ones we have already done. Yesterday we added the Statue of Liberty to our cards. We discussed the history and significance of the statue (written on the back of the card), then we get out our globe and point to where the statue is located and where we live, etc. We also review where the other landmarks are in the world.
Each week we are learning a new Proverb using some Proverbs picture cards I picked up cheaply at a homeschool sale. This week we are learning about a man without self-control is like a city whose walls are broken down.
In the future I plan to learn Spanish words using flashcards and for the big kids I want to go over first aid using some cards we got from the Boy Scout shop a long time ago. I also want to introduce some little songs and things from this blog. She has some great learning tools over there. I'm sad that she was unable to keep up with the blog and hope that what is there stays there for a long, long time.
Now, that all looks like a lot, but it really takes very little time. My littles are loving circle time and they have already learned quite a bit. I am wondering why I didn't do this years ago when I first started homeschooling.
Hop over to Mary's blog to link up with other Show and Tell posts.
You're doing wonderfully! Oh, memories! My boys are 16 and 17.5, so we don't have "circle time" anymore! But there are such wonderful blessings to come for you...you might enjoy reading Diana Waring's "Beyond Survival - A Guide To Abundant Life Homeschooling" ( http://www.dianawaring.com/beyondsurvival/index.html ) and then, "Reaping the Harvest - The Bounty Of Abundant Life Homeschooling" ( http://www.dianawaring.com/reaping/index.html ). Great books!
God Bless,

Oh the memories!!! I honestly long for the old days when mine were babes, toddlers and early schoolers! I loved doing circle time with my kids. We still do a circle time of sorts each morning with bible study, questions about the day ect.
You are doing a wonderful job! Love the new family photo. Precious.
