Oct. 7, 2009 - Garden Results
Remember how excited I was back in the Spring to be putting in a garden? Well, the garden season is almost over here and I've learned a few things.
First, I can't grow tomatoes. I get good green leaves, but very few actual tomatoes. We have plenty of bees, so that isn't the problem. It could be the lack of full sun. My family doesn't really like fresh tomatoes anyway, so next year I won't even try, though I know I will be tempted because I love fresh tomatoes. I'll just have to go to the farmer's market. I also failed at potatoes, onions, and garlic. I thought those were supposed to be the easiest things to grow. I do have onions and garlic, they just don't look the way I thought they should. They're not big and the garlic looks pretty much the same as when I planted it.
I can grow cucumbers very well. They were prolific. I even made freezer pickles and they are good.
We now have green beans. Not sure why they waited until September to produce. I went out yesterday and harvested some and we ate them for dinner.
This week I plan to harvest our herbs and put them through the dehydrator. It's way cheaper than buying dried herbs from the store and I won't be irratdiating them, so it's healthier too.
I think I will continue to do small gardening in the future. I may even put out some lettuce, spinach and carrots this Fall, but I'd better get with it if I'm gonna do that ..
If it crosses your mind, could you lift us up in prayer. LIttle Joy has begun to run a high fever. The flu is rampant in our area right now. I don't know if that is what she has, but she is a sick little girl. I'd appreciate prayer that the new baby doesn't get ill.
Oh dear! We are praying for you all. The flu is spreading like crazy up here too. We are laying low this week and staying home since everyone we know has it or is recovering from it.
As for your garden. Onions are most happy directly in the ground and Potatoes are happiest with tire gardening. Our onions did great directly in the ground and my mom's failed in a raised bed. I've never tried garlic before. Praying for the little ones and that you and baby do not get it.
Blessings,
Dawn
