Apr. 24, 2008 - Happy Earth Week!!

We've had a great week learning about how we can help keep God's handiwork beautiful! Here are a few pictures from our week.

Earth rice crispie treats. They were Yumm-O!

We went on a walk and picked up whatever litter we could find. The kids thought this was a game, hunt for trash.

We also learned about recycling. Here we made recycled paper. Mom added a couple flowers from our garden.

As a family, we had 6 bags of garbage in 4 days. For a family of 7, not sure if that's good or bad.

We talked about acid rain and it's impact on God's and man's creations. We used vinegar ( acid ) and chalk ( limestone statues ) to show the effects of it. I showed them pictures of statues ~ before and after they were hit with acid rain.

Here is the chalk dissolving in the vinegar.

Of course we discussed many scriptures that talk about God making the earth, the birds, and the trees and how it's up to us to care for His creation. I was challenged as well, that’s a plus!!

I think this was a productive week of studies......

Hi Kim,
I love those earth day studies. I think the nice fattening earth day treats would be the yummiest!
We have been doing bird studies all week. We are doing our last project about the beaks tomorrow. Thanks for the great ideas. My son has had a wonderful time with them!

I like your ideas! I've never tried the chalk thing before.

I think our trash for 4 per week is around 4-5 large bags and a full recycle bin. So I'd say you're fairly close to not having to much trash for a large family.
I think the previous owners of my house used our backyard for their own landfill!! My three dogs just find all sorts of "treasures" in the back!

I'm off to try that chalk experiment, it's just got me too curious now! :)
