Apr. 23, 2008 - Feathered Friend Visitors
Posted in Bird Study

We've had a couple visitors this week. My son, Kaden, he is the official bird spotter. It seems he's the one to spot our feathered friends.

This time is was a Downy Woodpecker. Beautiful white spots on black feathers. The males have a small red patch on their head. Here's a close up picture I found online.

Photobucket

We watched him from the window in awe as he pecked away. It was quite comical. All of us starring in wide-eyed wonder of this magnificant creature God made. Dad tried to open the window to hear him pecking, but as soon as he did, our friend flew away. But we were able to watch & draw him for about 10 minutes. Long enough to look in our field guide to be sure that he was in fact a Downy, and find out a couple facts about him.  This was as close as we've ever been to one.......right outside our front window.

Photobucket <~~~ he's on this side of the tree, where the branches start to come out from the trunk........in this bottom picture, he moved to the top section of our tree.

Our other visitor was a Common Grackle ~ not quite as exciting, but a new visitor to our yard nonetheless.

Actually, it was still cute at 3 ): My heart breaks now when she says "I wish I could suck my thumb." I want to tell her "Well, go ahead because Momma thinks you're precious." But I know in the long run, it is best for her to stop now when she feels like she needs to. She's such a mature girl **crying**.

Those are great. It's amazing the variety we have in our own neighborhoods.

Oh cool, you have Downys there! They are sooo cute and fun to watch. AND they love to come to suet baskets. Have you considered putting one out in your backyard? They aren't shy to come to them. I have a recipe for some homemade suet listed on my side bar that they simply love! Also do you have Hairy Woodpeckers in your area too? They look very much like the Downy, only Hairys are larger and have a longer beak. We get them on occasion too.

They're beautiful. And may I add that there is nothing common about a grackle. We get them too and I know there are some who consider them undesirable, but I love their iridescent breasts and their piercing eyes.

Gorgeous, gorgeous pictures!

Apr. 23, 2008 - How fun!

We haven't seen any woodpeckers here - but hopefully once we move we may see some. It may be too rural, though.
However, we do get grackles at our bird feeder everyday...several of them in fact! It is so neat, to me, because from far away they actually look black, but like it shows in your pic, the sun brings out quite a purple/blue (aka violet, lol) color in their heads! They make some neat noises, too, talking to each other. :) It is fun bird watching. I can't get close enough with my camera, though. But the birds we have gotten at our feeder include the common grackle, doves, finches, robins, cardinals, and sparrows. :) Oh and there is one black bird that we have yet to identify - it has some yellow in it's wings. We did recently pick up some new bird books from the library, so perhaps we can tackle that task tomorrow! Thanks for sharing with us!

Neat! We haven't had a lot of bird visitors. We stopped feeding them some time ago, and they haven't forgotten. :'P Okay, so they just haven't found our feeder yet. Still, I'd like to see your feathered friends.

We have Grackles everywhere here. Interesting that they were never native in the first place. Grackles and Starlings, I believe, have similar histories. In our area we now have a thriving population of wild parrots. Scary what can naturalize, huh?

Our whole yard is full of grackles! We did a bird count the other day and we've spotted 17 different birds since we've moved this last month. That is absolutely amazing to me and so fun.

Andrew was eating breakfast the other morning when he spotted the male cardinal. He jumped up from his seat yelling to me that the cardinal was here and then scurried all around the living room looking for the bird book. I found this to be quite comical since we already knew it was a bird but obviously he has seen us grab that book a number of times. He paged through it until he found the cardinal and then finished breakfast, lol.
