Dec. 5, 2008 - Art Appreciation ~ 'The Vase with Sunflowers'

The Vase With Sunflowers, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh

Photobucket

Some of the kids' thoughts:

  • very detailed technique with his brush strokes ( difficult to tell in this pic, but if you go to a site you can zoom into it, you can see it )
  • drab, mellow colors
  • the flowers are dead ~ Van Gogh must have been upset or sad when he painted it
  • it doesnt bring a sense of cherriness to the viewer

This time, instead of recreating it from scratch, I found this, a print out coloring page of it -- my son colored his, the girls and I water colored.

Wow! I am amazed by how well you guys did. So good! I would love to start doing picture study, but never seem to have enough time to get everything in. I'm going to have to see how we can add it after Christmas.

We would all love to turn the sand into snow if we could. We miss it a lot!!

Did you enjoy your pizza? Yummmm!

Beautiful works of art!

Just in case you hadn't found it yet, this is a great site for Van Gogh:

Hi Kim! I just wanted to give you the web address to my permanent blog. I am deleting my blog here at homeschool blogger in order to maintain just one blog. It was a tough decision on which blog to keep, but the blog at wordpress is much more user friendly and simple to work, so I thought it would be the best choice. :) Sometimes I don't understand why I tend to complicate things for myself...guess I have a lot to learn yet! :)

During our Art unit, we only briefly touched on Van Gogh, we did discuss that he was a very troubled artist and many times his art reflects that. My oldest, who is very sensitive, thought that it was so sad that anyone could ever end their life as he did. I found myself wonderring if maybe I should not have introduced the whole idea of "suicide" to her as she is so young (9) and she had never really even been introduced to the concept of someone being so sad that they would take their own life. How did your kids take it? Did they ask many questions? Just curious.
