Jan. 5, 2009 - 'Mrs. Frisby & the Rats of NIMH'
Posted in Reading Rainbow

We finished 'Mrs Frisby' today. We very much enjoyed this book. The kids and I found ourselves wondering what it would be like to have a rat clan of our very own living in our yard. We talked about what the world would be like if rodents, or any animal, were as smart as humans. Interesting thought, huh?!

I read it years ago, but to read it again with 'adult ears,' well, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Here are a couple drawings of scenes from the book.

Our next read-aloud, as suggested by my sister and continuing on with our Newberry & Honor Award books...

Can't wait to begin!!! I've never read it, surprisingly.

We listened to this on tape a few years back and loved it... it's one of those bittersweet books that left Jonah & I teary at the end. If you have a road trip coming up, I can loan you our CDs for the car.

I hope you enjoy it too. I haven't read it since I was a teen though. Maybe I should read it again. I seem to have lots of time at work through training at least.

Oh I hate to admit this but we do have rat clans in our yard...yuk. Fortunately they're just your run of the mill rats and no genuises in the bunch.
I love "Island of the Blue Dolphins" but my kiddos are still a bit young for it. Ewww there would be all kind's of cool Polynesian (sp?) type stuff to do with that book. You can tell I'm a unit person :-).

Sounds like a good book. I might have to check it out. Christopher is in need of a new book to read soon and it might be something right up his alley.

Our shelves also have these, and I've not read either--I can't quite figure out where to add Ms. Frisby in our reading as the older two tend to read books that are more on topic with their history studies. I'll probably squeeze it in with the youngest, and I've found that the older two like to eavesdrop. Like you, I look forward to Island of the Blue Dolphins, even if I wind up reading it on my own.

We're reading The Tale of Despereaux right now with the youngest--mixed reviews, but I'll probably blog about it later.

I've read Island of the Blue Dolphins a couple of times (well the first time it was read to me and the rest of the class by my 4th grade teacher). It's definitely a tissue box book, there's a couple of hard things to read. But it is a fantastic story.

Glad you enjoyed the Mrs. Frisby!

Blessings, Melissa

How fun! I've never read either of those books. We may have to add them to our list. We are reading the "Sarah, Plain and Tall" series...currently on "Caleb's Story". We are nearly finished reading "Sing Down the Moon" by Scott O'Dell, the same author of your new read aloud. :) It is good historical fiction book about how the Navaho's were driven out of their land by "Long Knives" or white men. It's very sad, the reality of it. It is also a Newbery honor book. In fact, Sarah, Plain and Tall is as well. :)) Happy Reading!
