Jan. 9, 2009 - Art Appreciation ~ 'The Chair & the Pipe'

Van Gogh's, 'The Chair & the Pipe' ~ 1881

Photobucket

Looking at the painting, the kids quickly pointed out the 'oldness' of the tile floor. It was actually painted in a kitchen and it was in fact, a tile floor.

They found this to be much simpler than the other paintings Van Gogh has done -- simple brush strokes, straighter lines.

The main color used is yellow; did you know that yellow became Van Gogh's signature color?

Also, the pipe and bag of tobacco on the chair -- that was Van Gogh's. He actually began smoking b/c Charles Dickens said that it was a cure for melancholy.

Here are our recreations.

Great paintings! Where do you get your pictures from? Do you have a book you use or do you buy each picture?

Don't be fooled...I was only on a blogging streak because we were on a break from school. My blogging must now slow down, lol. I have so many things I want to accomplish, too. I must be disciplined! LOL

Where is Buddies residing now?

You are doing SO wonderful on artist study! I love your children's observations on things; artist/picture study really helps to fine tune those observation skills. Very interesting about why Van Gogh started smoking.

Praying your enjoying your weekend,
Melissa

P.S. Are you up for a new banner photo? I took some pretty cloud/tree line pictures the other day. IF you'd like a new one I can send you one. I like the new background!

I would love to look through your children's journals. What fun you'll (that is a word here in OK) must have. We are also doing an Art study but have slacked a little lately. I hope we can get back into it this week.
Thanks for your kind words concerning my schoolroom cleanup :-)!
Blessings, Julie

Wow! I am impressed!

I attended an art class by a local artist named Pinnock and my 8yos and I love it. It is an oil class and it is his first experience with oils.

We should study Van Gogh...thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Kim,

Sorry you weren't able to comment on my other blog. I'm not sure why you would need to register. I'll have to ask around and see if others have had to do this too.

Blessings,
Theresa
