Aug. 27, 2009 - Poetry Day
Posted in Poetry

I got the idea of a poetry day from Melissa at In the Sparrow's Nest......thanks again, Melissa!

We chose this poem to go along with our sunflower/wildflower week:

One lonely sunflower growing in the sun
Wants to play and have some fun
Then whoosh went the wind
And scattered all the seeds
And now there’s lots of sunflowers
Playing in the breeze.

We talked about each line and then the kids copied it and drew a picture.

What a great little poem! Your kids do such a great job on their notebooks! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you about the corn..... here are the instructions on freezing on the cob.......Blanch ears (drop in boiling water) 1.5 inches in diameter for 6 min and ears 2 inches in diameter for 8 min. and for larger ears - 10 min. Cool. Drain. Wrap ears individually in moisture/vapor-proof film. Pack wrapped ears in freezer bags. That's all there is to it.

I posted a response to your question after your comment. Then I went digging deeper into the local college's website and it appears they have addressed homeschoolers to college so I will go post their information for you.

Peace and Laughter!
Vicki

P.S. Nice to meet you!

Looking back, I wish I had had the guts to start homeschooling sooner. My spouse had wanted to homeschool but I had been afraid.

It wasn't until my son suffered unbearably terrible things at the hands of the so called experts that I finally gave in and brought him home for good. Through many tears over what he had suffered, I came to the conclusion that no matter how poorly I did, I could certainly never be worse then what the system had put him through.

I didn't learn about unschooling till after attempting the 'school in a box' method which didn't work so well for a class of one. I kept digging and came across natural learning and unschooling and decided to give it a go. It's been four years and I have my happy son back.

I've researched all the forms of learning and came to realize that I've always been a radical unschooler in how I've chosen to raise my children. I just hadn't realized school was an option. Since learning that school WAS an option, all my children are much happier and in charge of their own lives. All three are thriving and incredibly bright young people. They all know that they can do anything, learn anything, that they so desire to do.

Oh, what a beautiful poem!

And beautiful drawings to go along with it, and such a nice way to tie it in with your studies on wildflowers.

Don't you just love it when you get the hang of tying all these things together?! It makes for such a rich, full school day. And usually much happier kids!

I enjoy sunflowers so much that I plant the large ones at the far edge of my garden so that they greet when I go to work in the garden. I noticed yesterday that the seeds are ripe for harvesting so I need to get out there with a sack. Thanks for reminding me :-)! Oh and just wanted to say also the American Goldfinches love sunflowers and I'll usually see them hanging off the seed heads trying to pry the seeds out, so cute.
Thanks for this and have a wonderful week!
Blessings, Julie

It looks like your new schooling method is coming along very well! I think it's great! I love sunflowers, I think they are neat looking. We have littler ones growing on the roadsides here in Idaho.

The kids are good! Growing fast, too! We've begun our home school year. Labor Day week will be our 3rd week. Hubby is taking a week off at the end of September for our anniversary and an overall "vacation break". So we'll be taking a week off of school. :)
We've been talking about baby #5 but the timing is all wrong. We're waiting on God for a definite but we hope to try again in a year or so! :) Plus, my poor self needs a break from pregnancy and morning sickness! LOL I'm praying that God will really spare me the morning sickness. It would help a LOT with four other children to care for!
Anyhoo...don't know why I got into all that! But love ya!

I wish I knew who wrote that poem. Nothing sadder than a poem without an owner. (said like a poet lol).

The pictures the kids made are really good. I think I need to work with my boys more. ;)
