Sep. 14, 2009 - Creative Writing

Photobucket

We've begun creative writing this year and I have to say the kids have really stepped up to the plate. They are really enjoying it and I am enjoying seeing their creativity.  I start them off with a line.......then they go from there. I do not correct their mistakes ( grammar, spelling ) but allow them to be free.

I will ask each of them weekly to choose something from their sibling's daily writings they'd like to share with my bloggy friends.

Here are the choices this week:

It was a cold, dark night when I looked out my window and saw......a great big, white owl. At first I got scared, but he was really nice. He had silky white fur, like a pillow. When I went to bed, he was there. The next morning, he was gone. That night he came back, every night he would come and sleep with me. The End

If I were a frog and lived in the swamp.....I would go on an adventure and look for more frogs and toads and would swim in the swamp. I would jump in the swamp and have lots of fun. I love being a toad b/c its the perfect creature that I want to be. Oh my, I just found a good, beautfiul toad and I want to go meet her! Hello, my name is Cody the Toad. What's your name? My name is Christy the Toad and I have a brother. Want to meet him? Sure, I would love to meet him. OK! Hi, my name is Cody the Toad, what's your name? My name is Kordy the Toad. Oh, cool name, said Cody the Toad. And soon Cody and Christy got married and had little baby frogs. She had 4 little baby toads. The End

WAY love this idea! Sometimes the kids just struggle so much to find a starting point. This gives them that.

Another idea, maybe you've already heard of, is to cut interesting pictures from old magazines and have them write a story to go along with it.

Good Job, creative Mama! Their writings are beautiful, it's so obvious they've been read aloud to. So, who's the toad I need to send my congrats to? ;-)

We did this a few years ago but dropped it for some reason.

Love Melissa's idea of the magazine pictures.

The kids did a great job. I look forward to reading more of their creative writing. I may just have to revive this. We did daily writing previously with story starters or prompts on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday they had Wordless Wednesday and could draw a picture. This was by far my children's favorite day. Thankful Thursday and Free Friday finished out the week. I know we couldn't add in daily writing but perhaps once a week would be fun.

Blessings,
Theresa

These notebooks are gorgeous, and what's in them...wow. Have you seen the handmade books at http://myhandboundbooks.blogspot.com/? I know, right, like I need one more thing to do! But they look as neat as yours. I'd love for our kids to decorate their plain black and white ones, but I don't guess they need one more thing to do, either.

Glad you're well. I stopped by a day or two ago and couldn't see your blog. I got nervous. Well, God bless you, dear.
