Sep. 4, 2005 - well here I go!

I've been making my own unit studies for the last 3 years using homeschooling the Easy Way and CM ideas! It has been great fun, and I'm kind of addicted to planning it all out. But next year I will begin the task of teaching my now 4 yob to read, so wanted something all put together!  Anyone have any suggetions!  I've always been a SONLIGHT fan, but have recently avoided them, because of their old earth science philosophy!

any comments would be helpful.

Anyone tried Tapestry of Grace?

We used "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" and it was easy. I would think that it would work well with your unit studies. If you have something good going I wouldn't mess with it. We started unit studies last year and I wish I had started out that way.

When our son was young we also used Teach Your Child to Read. The other resource we used was Five in a Row. We enjoyed them both.

100 Easy Lessons here as well. Big thumbs up! The only part we left out was the writing part...I chose Italic Handwriting by Getty & Dubay instead. For a 4yo I think Five in a Row is perfect! My 6yo still talks about bouyancy...the science that we learned when we were "rowing" Ping. You can get lots of info from the FIAR message boards and archives as well.

I'm not sure what you mean by the old earth philisophy with Sonlight...but we're just starting it now. Could they have changed since you last checked them out?

God bless you,
Marsha

Sep. 5, 2005 - Sonlight's Old Earth Philosophy!

I'm not sure how to respond to a post, so this is the way I'm doing it.

Yes ! I'm sure they have an Old Earth philosophy, the do believe in Creation, but that 1 day could have ben 1000 years to God!

Here is a link to their catalog, that refers Sonlight as: the Old Earth Creationist under Science: Creation/ Evolution

I still really like their program, have used it for 5 years, and worked the booth also? Still deciding

Sep. 5, 2005 - reading ideas

Posted by Anonymous

I just found your blog through the random search button. Glad to see you are starting up a blog. I've been blogging for 4 months and really enjoy it, especially reading my post from past months. As far as reading goes, I too, used Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I found it worked well for my now 8 year old daughter. I did the writing assignments included in each lesson using Denelian style writing. For my now 6 year old son we are using the Bob Books. We started with Level A Set 1 and have been working through all 5 sets of books. It's relaxed, fun and best of all he's reading and loving it. I did just purchase Happy Phonics from lovetolearn.net. I absolutely love the game ideas and both my 4 and 6 year old are taking part in that program. Of all the things I've reviewed or tried I like the Bob Books and Happy Phonics best. Check out my blog if you like at www.camphomeschool.blogspot.com
