Homeschooling in the High Desert

A tire, a violin and a streetlight...

What can I say but, "the day in the life of a homeschooling family...."

We did some work in the city for my aunt who is moving offices. I did some filing, Kevin and the boys did some phone wiring in the new office. After we finished, about 8:00pm on Friday night, we went to leave and lo and behold, our tire was flat. Well, why waste that beautiful lesson, Noah our youngest and Dad worked on the tire. I realized that Sam had not practiced violin that day and he had just learned something new so I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to get in some practice.

SO imagine the scene: Dark foggy parking lot, with the yellow glow of streetlights, a 1999 Suburban on a jack, a 7 year old "helping" dad change the tire while our 9 1/2 year old is serenading us with violin music. It was a site to behold.

Happy Homeschooling.....

Fire Experience

So, we have thus far survived the "Firestorm 2007". We have recently sent home the last of the "refugees" from Julian and have put our house back to order. We had 8 additional people, for a total of 12 (including 6 teens) in our home for the last 5 days. It was a blessing. The fires are still going strong in some of the areas around us; however we are getting smoked out pretty badly for the first time all week. Can't complain much I guess. We have lost power and regained it, and lost phones a couple of times.

It was amazing to fellowship with my two homeschool mom mentors. I was blessed beyond measure by the wisdom, gentleness and love that they shared with us all during a really crazy time. There was order (most of the time), a spirit of cooperation and true honesty. When one of us was struggling, we would have a group huddle and pray through it. We had a wonderful "man of the house"; my friends’ husband stayed with us and kept everything going (generators, communication, and spiritual headship). My husband was on the fire line for a few days and the other husband was in town helping with power problems.

We saw great tests and feel that the Lord helped us through each one of them.

The fires are almost out, but there are still many problems for San Diego. Please keep them in prayer. May God refine with His pure fire.

New Journey

Well, another journey for the Bennett family has begun! We went to our orientation for adoption yesterday. We have decided to do Concurrent Placement, which means we would probably be the first foster care home for a child, while the parents try and straighten up, if it happens, the child is reunified with them and we get the blessing of helping to facilitate that with them. However, if it doesn’t happen, we have the blessing of adopting the children after rights are terminated.

We talked with the boys about all of this and we are excited about growing our forever family through foster and adoption. This has been a dream of mine for years, and in the last two years or so it has grown stronger and we feel it is time to take the first steps. I know it is a difficult road, as I was not raised by my parents, and had many “foster” parents care for me. I was truly raised by the village. Now, there are things that are very difficult for me because of this, but for the most part, I know that any other way would have been much worse. I have so many blessings and reason for thanks.

My DH is also on board and seems truly excited. We consider this a ministry and the ultimate way to show our faith to the Lord and to the world. Please pray for us as we start the process, and it is a PROCESS. It is invasive, long, redundant, however worth it in the end. I understand the why’s, but some of the how’s are nerve-wracking!!

Have a blessed day in the Lord!! I am soooo excited I could scream!

Thankful for...

I am thankful for:
-The story of Baby Noah and seeing all those around the country rally around his family. What a privilege to be considered one of their family in Christ.

-Remembering how wonderful it is to snuggle up and read with my boys! I can't believe I put that on the back burner for the last couple of months!

-The encouragement I received from my friend Kelly in Borrego Springs yesterday!

-My family in Christ.

-My Grandparents (all of them)

-My Husband and how much he loves the Lord!

-My Sister and how much she has grown in the Lord

-Autumn weather!!!!!

-And most of all.....for the love of Christ that still overwhelms me every day~!!

Patricio has died

For those of you who read about the Llamas, I wanted to inform you that Patricio (the 2yo) has died. We don't know why, but alas it is so. Now he is feeding coyotes someplace in the far distance. The circle of life goes on. I liked Patricio, but Llamas are not meant to live in the desert. SO now we need to find a place for his little friend, Scott the white boy. My children took it well. It was hard to get really involved with the Llamas because honestly, they don't like people. They learn to tolerate them, but not really enjoy them. So, the boys didn't get really attached  to them. They thought it was sad that he died, but they got over it rather quickly. And so our lives go on, with one less Llama.....

Therapy

The best way to work out your "issues" is by making your own bread (from scratch by HAND, not the machine) and hanging laundry on the clothesline! Try it! Let me know what you think!

Contentment

I have just finished a month of insanity! We had a young man from France out for a month (we hosted him last year from NACEL International and he returned on his own this year). It was a very different visit. We will keep praying for him, as he is a very bitter atheist. But the point of this blog is to discuss my new appreciation of my life. We have done so much and gone non-stop showing him various places. My house is a mess, my life is a mess and I have never been happier to get up at 5:00am before!

This last week I have started on my old schedule and it is bliss! I appreciate the fact that I homeschool my children. I appreciate the fact that the Lord has blessed me with a beautiful place to live. I appreciate the fact that I have a husband who loves the Lord and loves me! I appreciate the fact that even though we have little extra money we are always able to pay the bills, buy a little something extra (this time it was Mommy's turn on the sale rack at NY and Co.). We are able to go on outings from time to time. We live in a small, quiet community.

I AM BLESSED. HOWEVER!!!! I was very discontent prior to this month. Thank you Jesus for showing me that all I was missing was chaos and distraction! SOOO for now, I am content and am excited about getting back on track with school!

My little "Man"

Chivalry is alive and well…

My adorable son Noah, was protecting our friends daughter as we walked up to feed the horse and llamas the other day. He claimed he was a Roman soldier. He was wearing his Ancient Egyptian golden wristbands and carrying his Ancient Egyptian throwing sticks (as weapons) which he had made during our studies (thank you handsnhearts.com for the great kit). SOOO to top off this great outfit he had a pink ducky bucket on his head for his helmet! It was great!!! He was so serious about the whole thing. We have been working on what it means to protect and care for women and those who are vulnerable (thanks Vision Forum). So I couldn’t laugh at him about it, it was darling. He would walk in front of us and “check the are for any dangers”.  Then we would take about three steps and he would do it again! I asked him if he was sure he wasn’t an Egyptian soldier, he was adamant that he was a Roman soldier….whatever works I guess!!! Just wanted to share and encourage all of you out there, Chivalry still exists in the world!

a day at the beach

We finally got to the beach. After living in AZ for almost 3 years and only 4 trips to the beach in those 3 years, we WENT!! It wasn't my very favorite beach, but it was my second favorite and that was good enough. It is amazing how much fun and how LONG  2.5 hours feels like! You can't beat, free entertainment, nature, fresh air and of course the water! All it takes is a little time (2 hours) and gas money (only 1/2 of the 401k each trip with the price of gas these days). We had a great day. The kids were zonked by the sun and so we had a very peaceful ride home listening to the Call of the Wild on cd (love the library books on tape). We got slurpeez at the 7/11 and cooled off in the a/c and cruised. A great summer day. The problem I now face is getting motivated to do school today!! I am still in my jammies, the kids are watching a movie and NOTHING has been done, and it is almost 10am! The problem is hubby is not home this week (working in town very early so he stays at Grandma's). So I am not getting up when I am supposed to! SOOO Tonight, it is early to bed, tomorrow is early to rise..etc... Well, my youngest is now asking for breakfast (Did I mention NOTHING has been done yet today!!!)...Toodles...

From Death to Eternal Life

This is a news article I was just informed off that is about a wonderful man we knew in Phoenix! I cannot even begin to share how shocked I was to find out about this! He was in a recovery program we helped with and he never was able to fully "surrender" over his demons and serve the Lord mightily as he so desperately wanted! He completed some wonderful programs, gave his life to Christ, but just never could get past his sins that needed to be addressed! I know that the Lord is with Mike and that he will have a long road ahead of him. I am very sad for him and very sorry for the lady who died and her family. Just shows me how close we are to desperate wickedness. How close we each are to the ugly reality of sin. Please pray for Mike and for the opportunity to share an amazing testimony. What a leap of faith he has taken. He turned himself in the anniversary day of the murder, he couldn't go forward until he owned up for his sin and gave himself over to be punished. I hope that his testimony will bring others to that same place of broken surrender. May God have mercy on him!

June 9, 2007 -- The devil may have made him do it, but it was Jesus who made him confess.

An Arizona man shocked cops in the East Village this week by walking into the local precinct and announcing that he'd strangled a woman on East 13th Street during an argument in 2004 - and that Jesus Christ wanted him to turn himself in.

Authorities said the confession has solved the previously cold-case murder of Myrna Gonzales, a 45-year-old homeless woman whose body was found folded into a large steamer trunk in a vacant lot at East 13th Street and Third Avenue.

"We wish Jesus would solve more of these," one law enforcement source said.

Michael Mohr, 51, might have gotten away with the slaying. But he'd recently had a religious conversion, and realized Jesus wanted him to do the right thing.

Gonzales' body was found June 6, 2004, in a vacant lot outside Mohr's building.

"He was relieved," said one law enforcement source. "He was a little emotional. He was just glad to get it off his chest."

Confessions of "Eve"

I AM EVE!!! Ok, so I am not really Eve, but I am just like her! Well, here goes, today I was going to try and smog my vehicle. We have had a "check engine" light on for months. My brother-in-law told us it was something in some system that had to do with our exhaust system (I don't speak car, so it was over my head), the part I understood was "the part costs $1100....." that was when I checked out. I asked if it was critical for safety/function, he said no, but when we try and smog we may have  a problem. WELL......I am getting to the point I promise! We just moved back to CA from AZ and have to re-register the car (it was originally from here). I was fretting all week on what we would do about this problem. This morning I was doing my devotionals and the Lord really gave me a peace and I was ready to trust Him to provide for our needs, including this situation. I was trusting in Him for he knows all our needs, He knows our resources...Needless to say, by the afternoon my flesh was in control. I talked my husband into disconnecting the battery cable in order to reset the light. He didn't want to but he didn't try and stop the "deceit" either. So, we go to some random shop and alas, CHRISTIANS run it!!! The little girl of the manager/owner goes to private school and here precious little hand written scriptures are all over, a cute little hand made cross, etc, you get the picture. So, that just added more guilt on...The guy goes to test and guess what, IT WON'T PASS!! He comes out and asks us point blank "Have you disconnected the battery recently? Have you had a 'check engine light' on ?" I felt like Adam and Eve hiding in the bush because we were naked and the Lord asked, "Did you eat the fruit of which I commanded you not to"  My husband and I felt like total dirtbags! I never thought we were liars or cheats but guess that sin nature needs some BEATING DOWN!

I am not shocked after reading my last post. Typically when I am really "up" and feeling close to the Lord, that is when the enemy attacks and I was blind-sided :(``

What a way to kill a witness. Funny, I was just talking to my sons yesterday about being about the Father's business until His return, so glad SOOOO GLAD He didn't return at 3:00pm today! Not exactly what I want to be doing when He comes for us....

Well,I am eating some spiritual crow tonight. As I listened to KLOVE on the way home, I was encouraged. Funny, there were songs that fit exactly what I was going through and at first I couldn't even sing I was so ashamed at my behavior. But after some "God Talk" I started to wipe off the dirt from my face.

Just wanted to share my mistake, so that maybe someone would be encouraged or re-directed from the wrong path....Now I am off to try and rest in the Lord (my husband and kids are gone all weekend, it is just me!) I have some clean-up (physically and spiritually) to do!

Standing on the promises...

Today I am standing on the promises of Christ my savior! I am practicing the gentle art of contentment.  It is so easy to grumble and complain about situations we face. It is much harder to smile and praise the Lord. So even though nothing major happened, I had a blessed day! There were moments when the enemy tried to trip me up! The enemy tried to steal my joy! So, I simply told him to get behind me and I was going to be content and blessed with the life I have been given! THANK YOU JESUS FOR YOUR TENDER MERCY THAT IS NEW EVERY DAY!! (P/S the Llamas are surviving the cold front just fine...thank goodness!)

Here are some prayer requests I have ...

Pray for Chrissy. She is a young lady I have known for many years. She grew up with my brothers (both leading very ugly lives). She has recently quit Meth (and other drugs). She has lost custody of all 3 daughters (age 3-8). She has gone back to high school (not GED but adult school). She is trying to get her life back together. I have offered to do a one on one recovery study with her....pray that she is willing to do this the Lord's way. Otherwise...we all know what will happen! I pray for her to understand and hold onto the redemptive power of Christ!

Pray for my brother. I recently was informed that he has fathered another child, due in about 8 months.I pray for God to wake him up to the realities of fatherhood and adult living (he is 27 also).  I pray for his unborn child and the mother carrying him/her. I pray for the Lord to be glorified in this situation.

Pray for our community and the problems that it faces with "Christians" who are always causing strife in the name of "God".

Pray for Jen, she is pregnant with identical twin girls, as a result of an assault. She is selecting a family to place them with. She is already a single mom and loves the Lord. Pray for her healing from the assault and that what Satan planned for evil the Lord would use for His good!

Pray for Donna and Joe, they are engaged to be married on June 29, talk about a MIRACLE!! They are both in their 40's and have been married before, she is widowed, he is divorced and this is the first marriage they will have that includes the Lord!

Pray for Nicole as she homeschools her daughter, an only child. Pray that the Lord would encourage her and direct her path. Pray for her health and rest as she recovers from some medical problems. Pray for her brother who has a terminal illness and is really withdrawing from others....

Pray for Kevin,my DH who is trying to spend more time daily in the word and in prayer.

Thank you all and may God richly bless you and your families!!

The Llamas are naked and now there is a STORM!!

OK, so we live in the high desert. It is about 2700ft elevation. It was 100 degrees yesterday. The llama sheerer came today. It was quite an experience. And after all the trauma of getting the Llamas in the sheering pen, he mad me walk them around and then...get this, he made me get all full of nasty llama slobber and hair and dirt and "manhandle" these creatures. It was very interesting, but I think I will stick with EMT for thrills. (Anyone want a bag of llama hair to card and spin, I am told it is very popular to do this, however I know NOTHING about it.). Needless to say, we now have a major cold front and rain moving in and I have naked llamas that look like some freaky poodle/llama mix (the neck, tail and feet are left on the rest is sheered to the skin). Poor little Llamas...

So today was one of those blah days. We got school started late, and I know I am supposed to be flexible, but it always irks me when I am late. Guess that is the type "A" in me. We got through everything planned and even did a cool craft (quick plug for "Handsnhearts.com"). We have just gotten into Ancient Greece (which we piece together from Sonlight/Internet/Hands N Hearts activities). We did our Fresco today. The boys enjoyed, however I thought they should have been more creative with the designs. They loved it but I was really hoping for the exquisite design mentioned in the handbook, alas, I have "camo" stripes and something unidentifiable instead. Are my expectations WAAY to high or what? Thank goodness my kids can't read this. I want everyone to know that I proudly displayed our newest "historical artifact replica" on our "Historical Artifact Replica" display counter. We are ready to pack up Ancient Egypt..it's HISTORY!! Get it...history....I crack myself up! Ok, definitely a sign I am going batty!

I just couldn't get out of a funk. I think it is sleep deprivation and the lack of a good hike in a few days. I was watching the Philadelphia Story (from the 1940's) and the pager went off. That woke me up! My hubby and I had a "date night" in the rescue vehicle (NOT THAT KIND OF DATE). Some lady drove off the road and rolled her car a couple of times. My hubby got to help do a rope rescue to get the backboard onto the road (up a rocky 15 foot bank). I got to hold a sign (WOOOHOOO). Hey anything to help. No one would let me get dirty in the rocks. We have a Sheriff we are friends with and they are a wonderful homeschooling family. He was on scene and gave me a little "what for". I told him I was just trying to be the best sign holder and water girl in the backcountry! I was given an A+.

So...it is time for bedtime prayers and I have been called! TTFN!!

Homeschool EMT Mom

Ok, so I am going to rub it in a little...I get to play firefighter/emt as a volunteer. Not many other Volunteer Firefighter/EMT's have to stop a geography lesson in order to go on an emergency call. It is actually my "escape". I get to have the best of both worlds and I am blessed.

Today we helped a very sick assault victim, then we had training tonight. We just got back into it after moving back to our little rural community. It feels like we never left. It is definitely a way to spice the day up. Not that I Like people to get hurt, but it is my "adrenaline rush" for the week. I am not into thrill seeking like motorcycles, bungee jumping, sky diving, but it is fun to go on a "Fire Call".  I mean I get to PLAY WITH FIRE TRUCKS!! Lights and Sirens and talking on the radio like a real "professional" HAHA Little do they know, I was hanging out tighty whities on the clothesline or cooking dinner, fixing a broken toy, breaking up a brawl between my boys...then the pager goes off :)

My youngest has just stopped getting upset about it. The first two times he thought I was going to get hurt, it wasn't just me, but everyone who went on the call. He likes to play in the fire trucks, but the function/purpose upsets him some. We had to evacuate a couple of times in the past because of big fires, so he has a little "issue" with it. But he is getting better. I only go on sick calls/house calls. The rest (car accidents were my favorite!) I can only do writing or put out cones, direct traffic, more support stuff. My hubby looks really CUTE in his turn-outs. But he actually knows what he is doing with Fire/Trucks/Extrication. I just pretend I know what I am doing with that stuff. But the medical, I really really like! Well, it is a cheap thrill I guess, and hey it is for a good cause! Once again, bedtime arrives! Have a great night/morning!

First Entry

Today I sit and write my first blog EVER. I never understood why someone would want to do such things...but after reading a few I thought it would be a fun way to connect with other homeschooling Mom's. Alas, my son wants to play a game now and I must close my entry...who has time for this??? :)

My Husband, the Llama wrestler!

So here I am again. I didn't think I would have time to do another entry. This is kind of a fun thing..so here goes. My husbsand has a new hobby, it is called Llama Wrestling! See, we are caretaking for my Aunt and she has two llamas. She insists that they are docile and easily dominated creatures. We are told by the "experts" that we have spoken with that if you corner a Llama they will surrender (kind of like France :)

So, he attempted to halter the little one "Scott". We were told that "Scott" has had a halter on before (WE WERE LIED TO). So my husband and his friend Scott (not the llama) walk into the corral and start to corner him and that didn't work, so then he tries to get him in a headlock and well, that didn't work (although it was funny). So he gets a rope and gets him (after 27 times) and then the dumb llama tries to hang himself! SOOO my husband tries the rope/headlock combo.

Well, needless to say, the Llama DID NOT give up, the halter IS NOT on him and they are definitely NOT docile! So we think the Llama may not be French after all (oh, you didn't know Llamas originated in France, me neither). We have now renamed him "Scott the Terrible". Mind you this cute little 100 pound white fluff ball LOOOKS sweet and innocent, but man does he have a strong neck!! Any Llama experts have any tips?

Now we retire, me and my Llama Wrestling husband, hope he doesn't get any ideas!! 5am comes quickly!
