Doug is out of surgery but still in the hospital. I have to say that I am not impressed AT ALL with his care.
He went in about 7:45 and had the filter put in his vein. The doctor came out and talked to us and all was fine.
At 9 the OR called and said they were starting the gall bladder surgery. At 10 they called and said the gallbladder was almost out and they would repair his hernias! We had no idea he had 2 ambilical hernias, but he did. At 11:30 he was out of surgery.
So we consult with the surgeon. He gave me all Doug's instructions. He'll have a belly binder on until March 7th to support the hernia incision. Because he is so overweight, he belly would pull the incision when he stands. OK, we can handle that.
He is to eat a strick low fat diet and no eggs for a week. I asked if that included anything that was made with eggs, or just cooked eggs. No eggs period in anything. OK that is good too.
Then he sends us to wait to come out of recovery.
So about 1pm he is transported to his room. He was very groggy from anesthesia, etc. But they took his vitals and he was awake and talking.
About 2 they come in and want him to walk. He's up and talking, using his breathing machine, had a few pretzels while he's waiting for his tray. So I asked if I could help him put on some shorts. Fine they say. So I lift up his gown, NO BELLY BINDER!!! Which he was to have come up from recovery with. So the nurse looks at his chart. Yep, belly binder at all times UGH. So we get that taken care of. Instant relief of pain. He has very little pain right now. So he gets up, walks a circle, goes to the bathroom, and now he's talking and being his ornary self.
So they bring him his dinner tray and it is pasta with meat sauce! What is pasta made from ??? EGGS! Ground beef surely is not low fat. So we send the tray back! An hour later, what did they send? Mashed potatoes, gravy, fried chicken! I asked those nurses if they are all asinine or just the people caring for us??
Oh, Sat. evening I demanded that they change his IV port. He was using the original IV port put in at 5 am Tuesday morning! FIVE DAYS!!!!! And, after coming up to the floor from CCU on Thursday morning, nobody, I mean NOBODY flushed out his IV!!!! No wonder it was clogged.
So I left and tired and hungry guy at the hospital. He's frustrated that he can't come home tonight. But they need to do blood draws. A baseline tonight and then tomorrow they will start kumadin and then do more blood draws.
So Doug is in very little pain. He said his pain is a 3 1/2. He is taking a low dose pain pill to ward off anything. He said he feels like a new man and he had no idea his chest wasn't supposed to feel so heavy!
Oh, his surgeon said he gall bladder was large and had many adhesions so he has had gall bladder problems for a long time. They were not able to salvage the stone. They had to break it up to suck it out. So we are not able to have the stone or the gall bladder. Bummer, but what can ya do.
So that's the latest. He is supposed to come home tomorrow. I pray he does. Thanks for your prayers and support. I really appreciate it. |
