• Nov. 13, 2007 - Visiting My Grad

I got to have a wonderful time visiting with my oldest son a few weeks ago.  He took me on a tour of the Twin Cities.  The highlight of the whole trip was a night out on the town to the theater to see "Whistle Down the Wind".

How can tell if you raised a true homeschooling - You look at his shower curtain which was a world map.  He wouldn't let me take a picture though.

Here are a few shots - I met Minneapolis' most famous non-citizen

• Aug. 7, 2007 - Jacob has returned

Jacob returned from China on August 1st.  In fact he had only been back at the seminary in St. Paul a few hours before the bridge collapse.  I had already talked to him and knew he was not planning on going out but it was good to talk to him much later that evening.  I tried calling but the phone lines were busy.  As it turned out he didn't even know about the bridge since he hadn't set up his TV or radio yet..  The whole incident reinforced to me that there can be danger no matter where you are.  And if you are walking in the path's God is leading then you need not fear.  At the very worst you will be with him in heaven.  He has posted some pictures and I have included the links to his two photo albums below.  He actually spent the last few days in China working in Primary school with 6-12 yo's who go to this total emersion school on evenings and school holidays.  The result of this program is most of these young children spoke better English than the older students they taught at the middle school.

Subject: China Update...

Hello to all,

We've finished our second week of teaching here in Xinxian, Henan province, and our fame collectively and mine individually continues to grow, more on that later.

This week we covered a broad range of topics with our eight graders who we see twice daily.

Monday we did introductions, farewells, and compliments.

Tuesday our theme was birthdays, Tuesday morning we talked about the months of the year, practiced the birthday song, then we had the children say their name and their birthday. That afternoon we had an American style birthday party complete with cake and games, pin the tail on the donkey, toss the ball in the bucket, and musical chairs. We have one eighth grade class of all boys who came up with full contact adaptations of these games.

One of our classes that afternoon was interrupted, by an acrobat show of sorts. Two workers came into to our class to remove a video projector, screen, and computer desk. These items would reappear in the schools auditorium on Friday. At any rate in order to remove the the projector from the ceiling the workers graped some desks and arranged them in a pyramid, (this was the acrobat show), one of them then climbed up this shaky structure to take down the projector. All this was done in the middle of a class period

Wednesday our theme was "Going to the Zoo" we talked about animals, giving directions, left, right, forward, backward, and cardinal directions. We drew a map of the zoo and students practiced giving directions to the various animals exhibits. We also worked on alphabetizing.

Thursday we talked about baseball and bowling, sung "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", learned about ordinals, and the rules of baseball and bowling. Thursday afternoon we went outside and played something resembling baseball and bowling.

Friday, morning the school was visited local VIPs including the General Secretary and Mayor of Xinxian as well as executives from a local company who presented awards to top teachers and students. Our group was featured in a video extolling the virtues of Xinxian Number 3 Middle School. The whole thing was filmed for the local news. That afternoon the TV crews were back to shoot more footage of our classes. I was, for some still unknown reason, selected to be interviewed, I was asked about the school (nice and very modern), the students (bright and friendly), and the food (delicious and great variety). I must also report that according to the caption on TV my name is now Jaccon.

We've been working with ninth graders as well although we see them far less frequently so we've only done introductions with them.

With both groups we have been practicing some of the trickier sounds, such as the th sound (often math comes out sounding like mass, fourth like force, etc.).

Well I think I'll close for now,

Jacob.

• Jul. 17, 2007 - The Lastest Word From China

Below is the copy of what I sent out to some of our friends yesterday with Jacob's latest email.  I have also added the other email we got from him when he first arrived 2 weeks ago since I hadn't posted that one yet.
My Note

Okay I was just mentioning to a couple of people yesterday  that I hadn't heard from Jacob and bingo there was an email from him when I got home.   It looks like his job is much different than what either he was led to believe or at least what I understood it to be from what he had said.  And for those who are not local to us PrecisionAir was a huge plant that made air system filters and it burned down pretty much to the ground on Tuesday.  They actually closed a big section of a major State Road for most of day while fighting the fire.  And the reference to Adam, Mark, and Stephen has to do with his three best friends of the same name so to have them all in a road is really funny.

Thanks for all you who continue to keep him in his prayers.  He returns I believe on August 1st.  I know he appreciates the prayers.

Subject: China Update...

Hello,

Well things here are going well; we took the train from Beijing to
Xinyang, Henan province, then vans an hour and a half to our teaching site
in Xinxian. Our group have become the darlings of the fourth estate around
here, twice appearing on TV and today we were photographed for the
newspaper. There is way more of me in the press then I would like to see.

We have far more students then we expected, nearly 600 total! 120 eight
graders that we see everyday, and 480 ninth graders that we see at varying
intervals. It's been tough going sometimes a concept seems to really click
other times we just get blank stares. The student's written English is
defiantly strong then spoken English. I think that a lot depends on the
teacher, some of the English teachers we have encountered are fairly
fluent and some seem to barely be able to speak English. We are teaching
six periods a day so we come home pretty exhausted.

We have to name our students with 'English' names, so it turns out that
purely by accident (there were two of name students), that there were
three students in a row named, Adam, Mark, and Stephen. How funny is that?

Thanks for the news from town, you'll have to send me paper clippings
about PrecisionAir. Was Holty at the anniversary thing?

-Jacob

Subject: Hello from China...

I made it to China safely. The flight went well, no hitches with baggage
or delays. I just had to wait three hours for the Air China counter to
open at LAX. Also the food the food was way overpriced in the terminal,
all things cosidered though nothing to complain about.

Getting settled in here Monday - the day I got here, we went to the zoo.
Kind of a sad place really most of the animals were in cages, and all the
animal exhibts were in mild state of disrepair. The big cats looked down
right depressed pacing back and forth in thier cells.

Today we did training/meetings most the day, this evening a group of us
took an excursion to Wal-Mart. On the way back we stoped for ice cream, I
was able to get Green Tea ice cream which was exciting for me, although it
took a little work to convince the lady that I really wanted green tea
flavor. I love the stuff it is very refreshing, there was buffet place in
Tampa that Adam and I used to go to for sushi and they had green tea ice
cream that was the only place I was ever able to find in it in Florida.

I guess that's all for now. Happy 4th of July.

-Jacob

• Jun. 19, 2007 - My World Traveler Heads to China

I’ve been very bad about getting anything blogged in so long.  Not sure what keeps getting in the way.  I have lots of stuff to sort of catch my friends up on but I wanted to stop and share this while it is fresh.

My oldest is off again.  This time he is headed to China for a month.  He leaves June 30 and arrives back August 2nd.  He will be traveling with China Service Ventures.  http://www.csventures.org/ He will be teaching at the vocational school.  His job will be working with teachers of English who have little or no experience speaking English with native speakers of the language.  He is very excited about this opportunity.

When we were at my in-laws Sunday for Father’s Day we were sharing about Jacob’s upcoming trip.  Well this morning my son got this really great email from his grandmother.  The email is copied below.

I just find it so neat and wonderful to see how God directs us along paths we are not even aware of.  We were aware of family that had served in central Africa when Jacob headed to Africa last year.  But we had never heard about a family connection to China until just now.  And then when you consider the size of China to see that Jacob will be traveling to the same area seems so miraculous.

I was just so excited about all of this that I had to share.

When your parents were here on Sunday I saw the plans for your upcoming trip to China and just wanted to let you know a little about family history that relates to that. I don't know if you were ever told, but when Loren's father graduated from Luther Seminary in the mid 1920's, it was his intent to go to China as a missionary with the Lutheran church. He and grandma Mathre were practically packed when the mission field was closed to new persons....mostly because of the danger from the war there. At the same time, my mother was hoping to get her nursing degree and join her uncle in China, a medical missionary. At any rate, the reason that I bring this up, is that the area that you are going to, Henan was once called Honan province. My mother was planning on being a nurse in the Sinyang hospital where Dr Oliver Distad served with that same Lutheran mission.  Uncle Oliver left his practice in Williston North Dakota and took his wife, Clara and 2 sons, Merril and Harold to Sinyang, a city on the Peiking (Beijing)-Hankow railway, about 200 miles north of Hankow, which at the time had about 100,000 inhabitants. I don't know what the city is called today. He was to supervise the construction of a new 150 bed hospital in Sinyang at the urging of General Chin, whose life he had saved at one time. He served that hospital as well as one at Siangyang, Hupeh and Kloshan, Honan. Evidently the church was making in roads in the area and one of Oliver's letters spoke of 9,000 of General Feng's troops being baptized. A quote from one of his letters said. “Our sole aim with these hospitals is to aid the mission work, by having evangelists in the hospitals, who instruct each and every patient in the Christian doctrine. Patients act as a drawing card for mission work, for when a person has been there and goes out perfectly well, by what he considers a supernatural miracle, they never cease to talk for and bring others in contact with the Christian faith. “The mission started a school in Kikungshan, which was a resort area for the Chinese and was here that he built his summer home. If you wanted to read up on the school, there is a book, "The Rooster Crows Again" which is a history of the mission as remembered by the students of that school. Most of these people became leaders in the church in this country on return and many lived in the St Olaf area, a heavy sponsor of the mission in China. I know that the ELCA has the archives for this mission in the archives at Luther Seminary. Oliver died on June 23, 1921 of typhoid fever while working an epidemic there. Within the next few years the communists under Chiang ki shek defeated General Chin's troops in the Sinyang area and it became very dangerous for our missionaries there. The school remained until 1949 and was burned during the next war, so doubt even ruins of it exist as it is a popular resort area and I'm sure the land was redeveloped. Oliver was buried there...but I don't know where....most likely in Kikungshan. None of us have ever gotten to that area so I find it interesting that you should be the first from the family to return to that part of the world. Harold and Merrill returned to the states with their mother for college prior to the First World War when China was completely closed to foreigners. Hope you have a good and safe trip. Grandma Mathre

• Dec. 28, 2005 - Getting Ready for a Party

This week we are packing up Christmas and getting ready for Jacob’s send off party.  The children are working with me to get the job done.  Today the tree and lights came down.  We need Dad’s help to finish packing stuff up and getting it into the attic.

For Jacob’s party I have decide to make a table with the theme Memories – Past, Present, and Future.  The Past section will have his childhood and high school albums out.  Present will be a photo slide show on my PC with pictures from his college years.  The Future section will have a place for people to write a message to Jacob.  I will take their pictures with the digital camera.  After the party I’ll take the messages and pictures and put them together in a 7x7 album.  We plan to send this album with Jacob to help keep family and friends close to him while he’s gone.

Our menu will be chips and dip, drinks, pickle tray, and because Jacob asked some chicken.  Since I have the ingredients left over from Christmas I’ll probably make some spritz cookies and Rice Krispie Treats as well.  The biggest problem is that we don’t know if we will have 15 or 115 people.  So I don’t want to over buy but I don’t want to run out either.  So far other than our family I know of about 8 other people who are coming.  I think Jacob has a couple of friends from North Carolina coming down.  So I guess we up to 17 already.  I have a couple people who I know aren’t coming but have sent something for the memory book.  And the rest is a big mystery.

• Nov. 7, 2005 - Jacob's support letter

The following is Jacob's support letter.  I am posting it here for a reference to others who might want to help out.

Dear Friend,

I have the opportunity to participate in an exciting educational opportunity and I would like to ask for your help in making this happen.

I have been invited to spend the spring 2006 semester in Kampala, Uganda, in East Africa, as part of the Uganda Studies Program.  I will be attending Uganda Christian University and participating in travel and classes.  These classes will include African History since 1800, Faith and Practice in the Ugandan Context, and Religion in Africa: Christianity, Islam, and Traditional Religions. In addition to classroom learning and field trips I will spend two weeks living with a host family near the school and week with a rural host family, I also be participating in various service projects.

As you may or may not know I am currently majoring in Social Work and History.  My future plans include attending Luther Seminary where I can plan to pursue a Master of Arts Degree in Mission and World Christianity. My career plans are to work in international community development.

That is why this opportunity is so important to me.  I would like to be able to experience living in a different cultural setting. I covet your prayers that all matters fall into place so that I will be able to take advantage of this opportunity and also for my safety during my time away.  I will need to raise $6,000 to help meet my travel and living expenses while I am out of the country.  Any donation will be greatly appreciated.  If you wish to support me financially you can make checks out to Jacob Mathre at the above address.

You can follow my trip at http://www.mytripjournal.com/jhmathre.

Thank in advance for your prayers and support,

Jacob H. Mathre

• Nov. 1, 2005 - Big Announcement

I’m so excited.  I heard from my oldest yesterday.  He just found out he has been accepted in the program that will allow him to attend the university in Kampala, Uganda.  He will be leaving the first week of January and returning at the beginning of May.  Now he needs to work at getting sponsorships lined up to cover his expenses.  We are all so proud of him.  Way to go Jacob.

Edited 11/3/05

Jacob has created a travel journal website so you can keep up with his travels.  I've added the link in the links section to the right.
