• Sep. 22, 2007 - How do YOU do it?

I've quickly discovered that this blog is going to obsess some of my daily minutes, if not hours, of thought.  I find my self looking off into oblivion and thinking "I'll have to blog about that and see what the others think".  So now I just have to get all these topics floating around in my brain down onto paper.... errr hard drive so I will remember what to write about.

There is so much value in other homeschoolers' opinions.  It seems that no matter how satisfied I am with our homeschooling experience, someone comes along and introduces me to a new technique, project or concept.  And of course the first thing that pops into my head is 'we HAVE to try that!"

Well I've finally come to the realization that we are never going to work in everything I've said THAT phrase about.  But I do want to work in a few every now and then.

Here's my dilemma:  We already have a full day of work in our schedule.  I mean full.  It goes something like this everyday:

7:30 - 9 am breakfast and chores

9 am - lunch :  Bible, History, Math

lunch - 2 or 3 pm:  Lang. Arts, Science, Read Alouds

2 or 3 pm - 4:  outside time, sometimes we end up doing our read alouds outside

4 - 5 pm: cooking and chores (kids get 20 minutes of tv, video game, and computer time)

We eat dinner, do a Worship time and then have about an hour or 2 before bed time.

I'm just not seeing where to work in all these wonderful ideas that are gathering virtual dust.  There are so many I literally peruse them every few months and catch myself saying, "oh I forgot all about that! we have to do that one soon!"

So any ideas on how to incorporate some fun projects into an already packed school day?

I'm all ears.....

Just do it! Do "school" till lunch, pack up a picnic lunch and head to the nearest park. Do your "work" at the parkor take the afternoon off. What is going to happen? Nothing! If you feel you are behind then do some extra work at night or on the weekend.

We plan at least 1 day trip per month.

Yesterday we did "school", went to a swim lesson at 11, did some errands, picked up school again at 2-4.

If we wanted a rigid schedule I would still have my child in public school.

Enjoy!

I would say it would depend on what the idea is. Can you give a little more information?

If it something that you can do once a month, try that. Like field trips. We have only one a month, sometimes not at all. If it is something that you would have to do weekly, maybe just add it in 2 or 3 times a week.

Also, maybe only do the things that you really want to do more than the others. Just add in each one as you go along the school year.

Blessings,
Heather L.

ok, lets say you keep your usual schedule but lets say on Monday when you get to your math lesson you tell the kids "every Monday instead of doing our usual math book, we will be doing ______" (then try out the new math idea you've heard) Then on Tuesday go back to your regular math lessons and when you get to History you say "instead of our usual lesson we are going to work on_________" (then try a new history idea) then Wednesday go back to your usual history lessons, but when you get to Science, you'll do the cool new science idea you've heard of. On Thursday you can do your usual science lessons but when you get to Language arts time of day, you try one of the ideas you've heard of.
And Friday you can do a new idea for your Bible time. This way you've spent 4 of the 5 days on what you've decided is the curriculum you want, but 1 day a week in each subject you've tried something new, that can be continued the next week. That way you don't have to plan all new stuff at once, you can spread it out over several weeks. And your kids can still have the structure of your routine, but also be excited about new stuff daily (or almost daily, however you decide to work it out). And you won't have to throw out all the plans you've already made, they will still be there 4 days a week.

One possibility- open a Word document or such on your computer , and when you get the odd minute here or there of a break, jot in a thought and save it to your desktop. Then, when you get a block of time, cut and past it and upload it to your blog- this is how several of my friends do theirs

You will find your answer within your heart. Only YOU know this answer. Why? Because the Lord can only tell you how to incorporate those things, how and when, into your family.

Continue rereading your own blog. Pray, pour your desires out to HIM. ASK what the LORD'S WILL is. Listen. Pray. Listen. (Pssst... this CAN be done w/ open eyes, pen and paper in hand :o) ) He will show you what, how and when.

I see and hear your answer - so do they - but is it the Lord's will for your family or what it would be for ours and theirs?

Here are so verses to meditate on while you seek the answers that only He can give you, and only those answers will satsify your hearts desires.

Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Isaiah 55:8-9 “ For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Galatians 5:16-18 "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law."

John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

1 John 2:27 "...the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him."

The first few years we were homeschooling I had the same problem - more ideas than time. Then I started reading books about the Charlotte Mason method and really took her ideas of short lessons to heart. At first I was concerned that we would be covering *less* information each week because of the shorter lessons, but soon found that we were covering more material. The added benefit of this was that we freed up more time every day to do fun projects, hands-on activiites, field trips, etc.

I looked over my homeschool journals and found that we are actually covering more subjects than we were before doing the shorter lessons, we participate in more outside activities, and my son has more free time to spend on projects (these tend to be educational in nature, but are not assigned and not part of "school").

All of those "fun" and "interesting" ideas you have to "add" to your school day, have got to be somewhat "school" related, right? Just slide them into the time slot that closest reflects the subject of interest. I don't know much about your curriculum or children. But for example, you want to serve at a soup kitchen..that's bible class because you are teaching your children the importance of service. You want to make a birdhouse, that's math, because you have to measure precisely and have a useful and enjoyable finished product at the end instead of a meaningless piece of paper with a bunch of numbes on it.
Get what I'm saying? All of the things you think you need to squeeze in on top of your current schedule have a place orkd in already...no scheduling problem at all.
Here's atypical day for us: Kids allowed to wake up when their ready(usually between 7-8 am) They ar allowed time to wake up eat breakfast(that they usually prepare or cook themselves at ages 3-8) During that time I give them their list of chores for the day, and suggest "school" work for them to work on. They are given te choice of which to do first. Lunch is usually around 12-12:30(which the kids also have a hand in preparing and/or cooking) After lunch we tend to run errands, if there's nothing on the agenda, I asses how much they completed before lunch, then remind them of their responsibilities for the day. When we run errands, my 7 & 8 year olds pump and pay for the gas, go into the pay centers and pay the bills, help keep track of totals t the grocery store, and remind me of things on the list or things I forgot to write down. We may also have a play date, where the kids run, jump, dig, or whatever their little hearts intend.
What I'm trying to tell you here is, you don't need to follow a strict schedule and stress yourself out because you couldn't fit in the "fun" stuff. Just make sure the "fun" stuff is linked somewhere. My kids are all very well educated, and are all up to levels according to our state standars, and just go with the flow. If you make learning a fun and enjoyable experience and link it to everyday "real" life, al the other other stuff is the extra stuff.
Hope that helps:)

I struggled like you are now. I took the joy out of learning. Try saving one day a week for the fun stuff. We do that on Fridays.

I saw your post on the homeschool form share Yahoo group.
I'm a fellow HSB blogger. I wanted to welcome you!

I don't have any wise suggestions; it seems you've gotten quite a few already! :-)

I like your brown/pink theme! Nice.

Hi,

I can certainly understand! My schedule is even more crazy. My kids play ball, so a lot of nights we don't even get home until 8pm. But, I have a friend who does something out of the "norm" on Fridays, i.e., for Math she does Math games. You might could do something like this if your schedule would allow for it.
