The Story of the U.S.A. Chapter 1
|
We can learn about people from the past by
studying them and reading books or going to museams. The first
Americans came from Asia. Sine if the early Americans got to South
America. All of the Native Americans spoke different languages and
lived in different ways. The first Americans were hunters. Scientists
can tell how old an animal is by testing its bones. The ancient
Americans built homes neat each other and worked together after they
learned to grow crops. A channel of water that connected the Atlantic
Ocean with the Pacific Ocean could be called a strait. There are one
hundred years in a century. Our relatives who lived long ago are called
our ancestors.

The Diary of an Early American Boy - intro
The
good things of the past were not so often articles as they were the
manner in which people lived or the things people thought. The author
particularly admires the feeling of patriotic pride when he holds the
old things. The evidence he gives that the people were very much aware
of the time in which they lived is that they dated and signed
everything.
