Sep. 16, 2006 - Making Some Peace
I have REALLY struggled with how/what am I going to teach my newly turned 6 yr old DD this Fall. Thank you to my friend J who was there to listen to me fret! And talk in circles. ;-) and guide me. I needed guidance, I just don't have the confidence or understanding *yet* as to what I personally should be doing to give my DD the education she needs/deserves. She's not like the typical 6 yr old (she reads at the 5th grade level), so its foreign to me to just go buy a boxed curriculum, open it up and just start, and there are not a whole lot of people I can talk to about her abilities (which run the gamut from great reader to beginning writer) so it can be frustratingly lonely at times. I will probably be making my own curriculum in some way, shape or form, for the rest of my DD's homeschooling experience, which I pray the Lord allows through graduation. I pray it'll get easier for me as I learn more and continue to take this to the Lord.
I LOVE AO, let me just say that first! I LOVE IT! There are so many wonderful books to choose from! I could never walk away from AO totally. But I have been struggling with the fact that I really want to teach history with the bible because history is of God, history is in the bible, and it just makes sense to me to teach it together, to show God's hand in the world. But I didn't quite know how to do it and I kept reading from some that one "shouldn't" teach ancient history to children due to some of the mature content or lack of good books, I was getting so confused! I had bought TruthQuest History Guides, which I love, but I was overwhelmed and wasn't quite sure how they were going to work for me (needed to use them, that would have told me ;-) ), I had considered purchasing Mystery of History I but wasn't totally convinced yet, I had bought a few Greenleaf Guides to xxx to help me, but it all still seemed so overwhelming to me that I decided to just stick with AO's schedule for Year 1, work on habits for my children and myself as we all got into the homeschooling groove, then tweak. Well, I couldn't wait that long, we are not in the 'groove' yet and I'm not happy with our history/bible. Sooooo, I looked at one site in particular that I enjoyed, Classical Christian Homeschooling but truthfully, didn't fully 'get' it until now. I spent this past week really looking at the book selections, how it all comes together, and I LOVE it!
Classical Christian Homeschooling has a wonderful plan for incorporating history into the bible. This is what I've written in my notes so far:
Read
* Genesis 1-2
* Creation Story by Messenger
* (Genesis: Finding Our Roots for me)
* Yellow and Pink by Steig
* Genesis 3
* A is for Adam by Ham (may skip these two, twaddly?)
* D is for Dinosaur by Ham
* Genesis 4-9
* True Story of Noah's
* Genesis 10-11:1-9
* The
* Life in the Great Ice Age by Oard
* Job - read entire book
* Genesis 11:10
* Joseph by Wildsmith
* Sumerians by Shuter
* Pharaoh's of Ancient Egypt by Payne ch 1-2 (this program seems to not glamorize the Egyptian false gods, it touches on them enough so we'll understand why God sent the plagues)
* Pyramid by Macaulay
* Mummies Made in
* Pharaoh's of Ancient
* Exodus 1-5
* Exodus by Wildsmith
* Exodus 6-14
* Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt (read while discussing plagues)
* Pharaoh's of Ancient
* Hatshepsut, His Majesty, Herself
* Pharaoh's of Ancient
* Growing up in Ancient Egypt
* Pharaoh's of Ancient
* Casting the God's Adrift
* Tut's Mummy Lost... and Found
* Pharaoh's of Ancient Egypt ch 8 (the end)
* Science in Ancient
* Cultural Atlas for Young People: Ancient
* Exodus 15 - Numbers 13
* Phoenicians
* Numbers 13 - Jonah
* Assyrians
* Jonah - Daniel 1
* Babylonians
* Science in Ancient
* Daniel through the book of Esther
* Esther's Story
* Cultural Atlas for Young People: First Civilizations
this sounds like a great program, I'm very excited about it! I have a couple of the books listed here, most of the Bible books are not at my local library so I'm going to see if I can get them through ILL, and my library does have most of the Egyptian books (but not the others: ie Assyrians, etc). I will use my TQ History guides to help me with resources and great questions to ask. We'll be fine!
Wow! This is a L-O-N-G entry, maybe I should take a break. Anyway, just checking in to say this is an answer to a prayer, THIS is what I've been wanting all along, I’m feeling really good about it.

It sounds like you have found the perfect plan for you. It combines Bible and history. How exciting! I may do this when my younger two are ready to venture into Ancient History. I am doing the happy dance for you! I hope this will give you much needed peace.
