Small BLessings (a small thing I wrote)

Amy opened the large book that lay on the weathered table. It’s pages crackled with age, and the dust made small motes in the early morning sunlight that streamed through the dirty window in the small cabin.

She continued to grind the coffee in the small coffee mill that sat on her lap, while she read the faded words in the book. The familiar words that were stamped by memory into her mind filled her once again with a wonder and hope.

She read Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows his handiwork” (NKJV)

She glanced out the small window in the cabin; she saw the wonder of the sun as it rose so majestically and bright over the towering green hills. Dark clouds rose in the distance, promising rain.

Amy glanced around her home. Even though her family was poor, they still managed to make everything comfortable. Beloved worn chairs sat around the hearth, brightly colored quilts lay on the backs on the blue settee, and pictures that the children had drawn were hung all over the walls in hand made frames made my Amy’s father.

The scent of fresh earth filled the small cabin, coming through the opened window. She closed her eyes and smiled, God has blessed my family, even though we are poor, we have enough. She sighed contentedly.

Her white apron was dotted with the coffee grains that had leaked from the coffee mill. Their fresh strong smell filled her nostrils. She poured the grounds into the water that was in the pot and put it on the stove.

Amy enjoyed the early mornings when everything was fresh, and the day was new. She opened the front door and breathed deeply of the fresh cold air outside. Trees, laden with gold autumn leaves, surrounded her. The swing gently rocked back and forth in the slight breeze that stirred everything to life.

Her bare feet sunk into the fresh earth, making an indent in the ground. Amy’s long dress swept the ground, tickling her feet with the strings that came from the bottom of the dress. Her long auburn her glistened in the early morning sunlight, glittering like gold.

Amy was the oldest of three children, being seventeen. Her mother relied greatly on her, being pregnant with her fourth child. Amy welcomed the duties though, she loved to work, and enjoy each day to it’s fullest.

Amy’s siblings were very dear to her. She had two brothers, William was twelve, and John was fifteen. Father taught them well, training them to be hard workers just like him.

Amy’s whole family relied on God, and accepted, though it was hard, every difficult thing that was brought their way. They prayed every night for a good winter, asking God to please not make it as hard as last year.

Amy thought of all these things as she stood there in the dawning sun. Thank you Lord for this day, and for my family who I love so dearly. She prayed.

She heard the stirring inside the house of her father. She smiled, Yes Lord, thank you so much! She was ready for a new day, ready to praise God all throughout the day for his blessings.

What my name means.

What Jennifer Means

You are fair, honest, and logical. You are a natural leader, and people respect you.

You never give up, and you will succeed... even if it takes you a hundred tries.

You are rational enough to see every part of a problem. You are great at giving other people advice.

You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone.

You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together.

At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.

You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.

You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.

You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.

You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are loving, compassionate, and ruled by your feelings.

You are able to be a foundation for other people... but you still know how to have fun.

Sometimes your emotions weigh you down, but you generally feel free from them.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.

You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

The Stanislaus County Fair

Oh my goodness, the fair this year was loaded with fun! We sat by the Davis's for the concert featuring Matthew West, and Building 429!! It was so awesome!! It was loud, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I took some pics of crazy Paige me and Rebecca Davis, we were having WAY to much fun. Also there was the Walkers, and the Beeches, although we didn't sit by them because there was limited room in the bleachers. Oh my goodness, Matthew West said he loves California, and it was the first time that he had ever performed at the Stanislaus County Fair, so in honor of the occasion, he made up a song, let's see if I can remember some of the lyrics...

Oh my oh my, I just stepped into some cow manure,
What a smell!

and so on and so on about us californian's being able to put anything onto  a stick and having it taste better. And he also said that he wished we had cheese cake on a stick. lol. I've never heard of it before.
All and all we had great fun, and I can't wait for next year!!!!!! Here are some pictures to end this post. :D

And this is the editing that is going on:

This is a long process, as I am re-writing the second half of the book.

If there are any more updates, I'll be sure to post them. :D

Life...

Let's see...life. Life is a never ending series of events (and yes, some unfortunate one's too) ;P Well, I will fill you in on what has been happening, and what will happen.

These weeks have been filled with an excitement of looking forward to our next reenactment up in Santa Cruz! It is formally called "Roaring Camp". It is the best event of the year, and I am looking forward to it!! This year I bought my own Civil War tent, and this means that I will be camping this year.

Now this means that I must prepare a whole different way than I used to, I have always stayed in a hotel or a trailer, but now I must tough it out, and prepare myself for a different kind of adventure.

First of all, the week before, I make up the list of all that I will need. The one thing that was a big necessity for Civil War camping, is a tin wash basin to wash my hair. I will be there for 41/2 days, and I don't think that I would like to go without washing my hair for that long...no thank you. lol.

We must think up all the meals and the clothes that must be taken. All of this takes planning, but i think you all know that. lol

I will tell ya'll a little bit about what it's like  to get there on Friday night and set up the camping. In this case, Santa Cruz is a long way from Modesto, so we sit in the car for about 3 hours riding up there. But don't take me wrong, I greatly enjoy long road trips. There is all kinds of stuff that you can do, listen to music, read, and in my case, write.

You get there about 2 in the afternoon, (but it does depend on when you leave, lol) you get out all of the many boxes that are filled with reenacting gear, guns, wool clothing, 2 canvas tents, and many quilts and a few cots, not to mention a lot of food.

First we must see where we are camping, as soon as we find out, we take all of this stuff and set up the two tents, and arrange all of the stuff that we bring along. You can hear the resounding echo of many hammers as people set up their own tents, and bang in the stakes.

The smell of smoke and violin music drift through the air, and laughter as everyone has a good time seeing each other again after a month interval.

Everyone settles down, lights their camp fires, makes dinner and has a good time. You meet new people, talk with your old friends, and generally (as i have mentioned before) have a good time.

Now, I will not tell you about the Saturday Sunday, and yes, Monday that soon follow, for when I come home from Roaring Camp, I will tell you with pictures to go along with it.

That is all I have to blog about right now, but i will soon be returning with the tale of "Roaring Camp!!"

A Few Thoughts...

Now, I have been thinking about this the past few days, and thought I would write a little blog about it...hopefully it won't take too long...lol.

But, this is mostly kind of aimed at girls...but guys can read it to. :D

I am quite new to myself. I know that some of you may think that is a strange phrase, but I feel this explains it all.

When girls read this, they will understand, because they know what it feels like to be unacquainted with one’s self.

It’s what I call the awkward age. Many girls my age and older have the same feeling, and we share a comradery. Our emotions are going through the same things. We are awakening into a new stage of our life.

Many things seem unfamiliar and new. The trivial things we used to care so much about, now seem unimportant, and hardly worth thinking about.

We no longer go into our room to dress up, but to sit silent, think and dream.

Our clothes must look just right, and a little touch of makeup is so tempting. Heels feel so right on us, and our hair must be perfect.

Another problem is, sometimes we read those romance novels, where men and women meet each other in just the right way, their looks have no flaws, and their life is just like a fairy tale. But we must realize life isn’t that way really. The girls in those books make us feel dowdy and very imperfect. That no man will ever have you, unless you are flawless and have the perfect complexion. We must realize this is very impossible!

The man that loves you for what and who you are and not who you could be is a good man indeed. His love for you is real and not feigned.

Also, a very important aspect is purity. The thoughts that we think and our actions are very important. The things we do and say is evident to everyone that surrounds us.

God plays an important role in this stage in life. If you leave behind God when you start on this journey, you have made a serious flaw. When you start out, you should lean wholly on God for direction, and not on pop culture, “What All Girls Needs To Know” hand books. The Bible should be our direction always!

This is just a few thoughts kinda covering a spattering of subjects, but I truly hoped you enjoyed reading it. :D

In The Studio Experiance

Some of you may or may not know that I share a passion for singing with my brother. It was just three weeks ago that we put that passion and our creativity for writing music, playing music and singing, together.
he has a studio that he built himself out of half of the garage. He worked for about 3-4 months on it saving up for materials and then building a little bit here and there till he finally had it finished. He built a vocal booth in there, which is almost like a little closet, except it is used to sing in. His dream is to become a music producer.
So anyway, I had been bugging Joel for months to record me, he continued to say when he had more time. You see, he was recording another band, and he was busy working on their stuff. I was anxious to begin, but when I realized it would be quite awhile, I gave up hoping, and bugging.
In the meanwhile I wrote a song. It didn't have a title, but it was about time going too quickly. That's about what I will sum it up as right now, anyway, I made up a little tune on the piano for it, and sang along with it till I got sick of it. I gave the song to Joel to look at, and he thought it was pretty good.
About a week after that, one day the people from the band couldn't make it, and he was in a really good mood that day, so I seized my chance. "Joel, maybe can you record me today?" I asked in the most winsome voice I could muster.
"Maybe" was his only reply. "Well, at least he didn't say no" I said to myself hopefully. A little while later, I walked into his studio and asked again. He asked me what tune I had thought that I would like. I played it on the piano and he asked me to go get the lyrics.
I ran excitedly in my room and grabbed the lyrics, hardly daring  to hope this might be "it". I returned and gave him the lyrics and he looked at them thoughtfully. He played a little bit of what I had made up on the piano, but he changed it into a different octave and changed it up a little bit.
I could hardly believe the beautiful tune that I was hearing. He quickly made up a tune. I just stood there hardly believing that this was all happening. A little while later, he was ready to record the tune.

Here is the first tracks that were put down, piano.

I watched the tracks being put down, and I ran to get the camera, not wanting to waste this picture perfect moment.
He got the piano track down in two tries. I was amazed.
Joel and me agreed that we wouldn't let any of our family hear it till it was completely done.
Next was the lyrics. He decided to change the lyrics a little to match the tempo and tune. So, we sat there at the computer with the original lyrics down on the screen, but we needed to do something more. After a little while we finally got the lyrics done. We recorded the piano track and did the lyrics over the course of about 45 min.
Now, we were ready to record vocals. Singing in other words. I was nervous, but I was very excited! So, Joel got out the vocal mic and proceeded to set it up.

Setting up the vocal mic.

When it was all set up we practiced the bridge on the song first. I sang it a couple times with Joel and I finally knew it well enough to record it. So...the first time  of putting down vocal tracks. We tried it about 3 times and got it. I was really starting not to get nervous and sing with all of my might.

Recording vocals.

It took us about an hour to record all of the vocals, and I was sad they were done. I had had a REALLY good time! So, with the  vocals all done, we started to edit the music. We decided we wanted more than piano, so Joel added effects, delays, and all manners of things to make the song sound really good!

You can see that Joel and me are really excited here!

Joel and me were both very pleased and excited about the turn out of the song. Joel had asked me if he could sing on part of the song, like the background parts. I readily said yes. I was so excited that he was having fun along with me. So he recorded his vocals. Sorry...don't have a picture of that.
We were over all very pleased with the song, (i think I put that about a million times). About 4-5 hours later, we were just about done. We decided to listen to the song all the way through.
Finally, the time came for the unveiling to the rest of the family. They listened to it, and  they were amazed! They couldn't believe how good it sounded, and that we had actually recorded it.
By this time, as you can imagine. I was tired and excited. We put it up on my myspace music page. I sent emails to some of my friends and asked them to listen to it...all of them had good responses.
Later in the day, Joel added more effects and made the song fuller. I was so glad that God had answered my prayer and allowed me to have that Studio Experiance.
Hope you liked the story of my studio experiance. If you would like to hear the result of those 6 hours in the studio, go to myspace.com/jenniferlangleymusic

Haven't Caught Up

Right now it is a lazy Sunday afternoon. The house is quiet and the click of the keys on the keyboard is a sharp sound in contrast to the quiet surrounding me. Nothing eventful is going on right now...just normal. I got home from church awhile ago...and I was excited that I got to see everybody again this week. Anyway...what is going on with me? I'll tell you. I went to a the first reenactment of the year up in Knight's Ferry...and now I am looking forward to the next one which is up in Roaring Camp. I went to a dance a week ago...and let's see...that's about it.
Here is a picture at the reenactment captured by my Dad on Saturday. Look how excited they look!

Here is a some of the group of guys that were fighting. Scott Trout in the very front, Jordan (my brother) with the red shirt poking out of his collar, and Nathan Davis in the tan coat.

And here is me looking very thoughtful.

Well...that is all for now folks...I hope you enjoyed the pictures. :D

He Passed Away...

A wonderful man who's name is Eric Davis, passed away on January 29th 2008. He was in our church, and he is missed greatly. When I went to the memorial service yesterday, I was so touched. His whole life he was constantly serving. It really motivates me to be a servant just like he was. It seems strange that he will never be with us again, but I am rejoicing at the fact that he is now in heaven.

To see a man who was an example of what a Christian should be, is always so wonderful.

The Greatness Of God

I have been greatly awakened to the Greatness Of God. I can't even count the many times that God has lifted me up spiritually and emotionally.

I have not lifted up my praise to God enough. It seems sometimes that I have only found the bad things that go on in my life. Never taking the time to count the blessings that he has given me, and believe me, I would never reach the end.

When I see poeple that have illnesses that will never recover, I don't think I take the time to thank God how much he has blessed me in health.

The countless things that he has blessed me with is unspeakable. Even though I go through hard times or discouragment in my life, I know that he will always be there for me.

Even though I feel alone sometimes, I will never forget the God that IS always there. I want to please God in all that I do. And believe me, I know that it is definitally not easy.

I want to live for God forever!!

Decisions

Decisions have come at me from every side at this time. Right now I have decided to get out of Ballet. I feek this is not what God wants me to do. My heart is not in it. My life is not aiming in that direction.

I hope that I am making the right choice, but after prayer, I believe this is what God wants me to do. Singing has been my greatest passion ever since I can remeber, so I'm gonna do something that involves this.

As you know, decisions like this are not easy. They may bring pain, regrets, but soon you realize you have done the right thing.

I do not enjoy Ballet. I must put this plainly. Even though I don't, I look back on all the entries I put up here previously, and I see how excited I was to be getting into ballet, but now I see I didn't know what it was like and until I tried it. And now I see it's not what I want to do with my time or life.

Poeple at my church will definitally be surprised, but I must not just do it for poeple. Well, now that I have poured out my thoughts, I am satisfied.
