It's a beautiful day...  by School at Home
My Dh is getting tired of being at home.  He has not been able to do much of anything since his surgery.  The weather is perfect today and we will try to take the kids to the park.  He will be able to keep his foot up while we are there and get some fresh air.  I can't wait.  It will be nice to just be out together.  Dh went for a follow up appointment on Wednesday.  They are leaving the wires and stitches in until August 4th.  The wires are just pulled out without any anesthesia or numbing.  I... (more)

So, I got to see my friend yesterday. And he was right he DID have me laughing within five minutes. I didn't do that great at the competion but my name did get called once so that was nice. I am kinda sad that was the last competion of the year ,but my feet are really, really glad!!! I could live without the foot cramps the day after! Standing and walking all day in boots is not my idea of shoe heaven. Not my good boots anyway, my work boots are like beyond comfortable!. The part I will miss about... (more)

It is G.B.'s 'birthday' (she declared that she couldn't wait until her real B-day on Tuesday, so we're celebrating it today!) and she all excited. Mom and the Girls are going to drop me off at rehearsal and go into town after cake mix and the like. Oh wait a minute, Katsy just came in wanting me to braid her hair! That outta the way...I've been allowed to become a regular columnist for the sweet magazine, "Godly Girls"! I was so excited; I've been wanting to do something like this for a good long while. You may have noticed that I have given my blog a bit of a new look.  Nothing too drastic, but a change, nontheless.  Anyway, between my family and my work schedule, and trying to keep up with LOTS of reviews, I've decided that ALL of my reviews will now be making their appearance in my new column - called (none other than) Reviews by Heidi - over at Take Root & Write.  You can click on the link to my column in my right-hand sidebar, right under my blog's information. World's Oldest Known Bible Goes Online!  by Communication FUNdamentals
Communication has come a long way in the Information Age!  We are now able to communicate with people around the world from the comfort of our own homes.  And we have access to information we never would have had before available at the click of a mouse!  According to this article on ChristianityToday.com: Parts of the world’s earliest known complete copy of the New Testament went online for the first time on Thursday. The British Library published the Gospel of Mark and the Book of Psalms from the fourth century Codex Sinaiticus with plans to launch the rest of the manuscript on... (more)

Old Church  by Anna
In the spring of 2005, when my late husband was diagnosed with cancer, I went to the little church that I had been attending for about six months to ask the pastor to come to the hospital and pray with us. I waited in a long line of people who were greeting him. Everyone was smiling and laughing, and the line seemed to barely move. I so wanted to be getting back to the hospital room and was so anxious! I prepared what I needed to say and wrote down the hospital name and the room number on a piece... (more)

The "SATURDAY MORNING POST" -- Update on dd  by Stacy Miller
Still no word from the doctor's office.  One person said it can take two weeks for mono results to come back.  Another said 5 minutes.  I am going to quit paying attention to those kinds of comments because I have enough on my mind without getting conflicting information.  We will just have to until they call us.  DD is still resting a lot, though not doing much actual  during the daytime hours.  She usually "comes to life" for about 3-4 hours in the evening.  Since that is around the time dh comes home, he doesn't seem to think there is... (more)

A Friendly Visitor  by BigHillMom
Last night when I finished blogging I went to make sure the porch light was on for when Todd came home from work.  The kids were already out in their tent in the front yard munching on snacks and reading a book out loud.  I pulled the curtain back from the window and saw a friendly little critter happily nibbling on some trash we left on our back porch; yes, it was a skunk.  Should I tell the kids or not?  I decided I better tell them, so I went to the front door and told them about our little visitor on the back porch. ... (more)
Saturday  by oddlysane
Our Saturdays are just lovely now, since we don't have to do any running around. It has a more leisurely feel. Our day started with some kids from around the corner coming over and wanting to play. This was 9.30am and we were not all dressed, so we sent them away. We really didn't feel like company and Hubby told them that our kids had chores to do. So we did our chores, then lazed around. Hubby had to get all his paperwork organised so he can get his tax done this week.  His cousin is an accountant and does... (more)

We are in our summer break Traditionally our home school "breaks up" well before our British contemporaries, just before Pixies Birthday in fact. We were all ready for that break this year. Re-thinking the grocery store incident  by Cappuccinosmom
Thanks to everything who left encouraging and affirming comments after reading of my encounter with the very rude woman at the grocery store.  There were also some thought-provoking comments as well. One commenter suggested that the woman's experiences growing up might have informed her opinion of large families, and having thought about it, I agree that's probably the case.  She was an older black woman, and we are in an area that is somewhat "depressed".  It is very common here for people to have large families.  The unfortunate part is that these "families" are not really cohesive families.  Quite a... (more)

Kids Say the Funniest Things  by LaDonna
Here's the situation:  We're sitting in church with our youngest two children.  The older two have gone down to the children's service.  I'm sitting holding W and M is sitting with her dad who just happens to not be sucking in his gut like he normally is.  The church is quiet and we are about to pray.  M whispers loudly while patting his tummy:  "Is there a baby girl in there?"  DH quickly shushes her and shushes me who is about to laugh out loud hysterically!!!  I don't know who else heard, but I was sure that I heard a... (more)

Our Creative Projects at the Show  by Belinda Letchford
The local Agricultural Show  plays a big part in our homeschool plans.  We spend around 3 weeks finalising creative projects for display at the Main Pavilion, plus a photo poster for the Homeschool display.   My rules for putting anything in the Show is that the kids have to do all the work themselves plus they have to want to put it in.  I provide the materials and time, they have to have the desire. This year they all did well with over 40 items between them all, and a nice collection of firsts, seconds, thirds and highly commendeds. Josh, who has... (more)
Kailyn's update  by mommaof4joys
Well, my littlest one is officially nine months old today.  Last week she started crawling.  My days are spent sweeping up dog hair, vaccuming up dog hair, and now cleaning the dog hair off of Kailyn. She has also started feeding herself, which is of course, comical-until you pull her off the high chair and see all the food that has been smushed and crushed into the seat. First taste of bananas.  Not too sure yet.....   Yep, they're a hit!!  Bananas are great!   Don't even ask.  She kept grabbing the spoon when I was feeding her.   New adventure-cereal puffs-sweet potato and banana flavored.  They stick... (more)
The "F" words...Freedom and Faith  by MusicMom
It amazes me that in 8 short weeks God has radically changed me, my faith, my focus, my life, my family, my future and my church.  Without giving all the gory details...I will share what is new in me.  Freedom... Freedom to worship as God calls me to worship Him.  Freedom to trust God with everything and hold nothing back.  Freedom to dream again. Freedom from pain.  God healed my neck which I first injured in 1985 and have lived with pain since. Freedom from fear.  Fear of failure, fear of being hurt, fear of letting others down. Faith... I have gained Faith.  Faith is... (more)

Not sure why I chose that title.  Gotta update since my last entry: 1.  we had a housefire.  DH woke up to the sound and, with God's help, put it out with a garden hose.  Even the firefighters were surprised.  Started with a motion sensor light and some pieces of wood he put up against it.  Guess the light stayed on.  We were about a minute away from losing most of our house (about the difference in time from when DH woke up to the window burning out, smoke coming in, and the alarm going off) and about 3 minutes away... (more)

Last Saturday there were 13 First Nations canoes and over 130 paddlers that visited our little community as part of the Tribal Journeys 2008 journey to Cowichan Bay. Their trip started with their ocean going traditional cedar dugout canoes leaving Bella Coola on July 8th, and some of the canoes came from as far away as Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and the Arctic! As the paddlers stop at each community along the way they pick up more canoes to join their journey to the North American Indigenous Games in Duncan, August 3rd - 10th. The local show runs for nearly 2 days.  It opens (with minimum fuss really) Friday afternoon until Saturday night. We have fallen into a bit of a habit of how we "do" the Show.  We try and get their reasonably early Friday afternoon, race around the Pavilion and see how the kids all did with their handicraft/art enteries.  Look around at other things, including the Youth Pavilion where the Homeschoolers have a display.  We then buy burgers from the local Rotary guys and sit down - shivering and freezing - till the fireworks, after which we go home and rest so... (more)

One of the world's great walks: Hong Kong  by Laura in China
Martin Booth, in his book 'Gweilo', about growing up in Hong Kong, says that the walk around the Peak is one of the world's great experiences.  Once a month or so, when we are in Hong Kong and the weather is fine, we abandon our books and take the Peak Tram to the top of the mountain.  The Peak walk is fairly short, and the path is level and paved, but there are wonderful views and great bugs.  These pictures were taken on our last Peak walk in June. Hobbes surveys the scene. Slopes are registered by the government, in an attempt... (more)

Today the girls and I attended our yearly curriculum fair.  We go the Southeastern Homeschool Expo which gets larger each year.  This year's keynote speaker of interest to me was Susan Wise Bauer.  I read The Well Trained Mind when Josh was in the fourth grade and I have to say it was the book that has had the most profound effect on how we homeschool.  It's been wonderful to hear her speak--and it doesn't hurt that she speaks very well: amusing and informative giving lots of info in a small amount of time.  Tomorrow I"m going back and I... (more)

Pioneer Farms  by Val
This was a great trip... although we hadn't planned on doing both, but ended up doing it anyway and I am so glad I did. My kids loved it! Those goats were a kick. I have about 20 more pictures of the 45 minutes they followed Logan around. Every time he would run, the would BOLT to catch up... sometimes nearly knocking him down in the process. Of course, Logan throught it was great fun. :) All in all a good day for us in the Rose Garden.   ... (more)

Fair Recap, Part 2  by Rohanknitter
Back to the fair:  by the end of the day Thursday,  we've finished with the goat show and we've also finished shearing any sheep in preparation for the next day.   The lucky goats just get to hang out and relax the rest of the fair!     Friday morning we all get up at about 5:30am  (not my norm, letmetellya) so that we can be at the fairgrounds by 7am.     We had several lambs in the first lightweight class, which meant they had to be ready by 8am sharp.   First the boys (and lambs) head to the washrack. ... (more)
Praise and worship  by Sherry
Just a quick note to just praise the Lord this evening! I have had so many answered prayers this week its so wonderful and awesome! The Lord is so good, and I just thank Him for remembering me and mine. So if your searching or seeking tonight, I just want you to know that He is listening. Just talk to Him. Yes some prayers get answered, some not right away, and some not at all, but with a little growth along this journey we start to understand that sometimes when we trust, even without understanding somethings, that He hears and... (more)
We'll Put Her in a Pumpkin Shell and There We'll Keep Her Very Well  by Sagerats
My mom is nearing retirement age and the closer it gets the more she talks about moving in with us.  We've joked around about it for years, like how I'll keep her in a high turrett where her grandchildren can throw food up to her through the window.  My mom claims she will be very cranky and a pain to live with because she will be old, tired, and in pain.  She'll be angry that she can't do all the things she wants to do. In one way I can understand that but in another I keep telling her she's just going to have to accept it. ... (more)
Birth Rape  by MotherJoy
Very good articles about 'birth rape' or traumatic birth. I think these feelings hit home for so many women, yet we can't say how we feel because we seem crazy. After all, we have a healthy baby...what else should we hope for? http://birthrape.wordpress.com/2008/04/04/not-a-happy-birthday/ http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/127116/birth_trauma_can_cause_women_to_develope.html?cat=52 Please read this if you know someone who is angry about her birth and you can't understand why. She is not crazy. If you've had a traumatic birth experience, please comment or email me. I found a great blog post about the stages of healing after a traumatic birth. However, due to a very graphic picture on the blog, I will... (more)
Fried Apple Pies  by BigHillMom
We've been trying to make fried apple pies this summer and just couldn't get our crust to hold up.  Finally, a friend from church gave us this recipe (believe it or not, he just happened to be carrying a pie crust recipe in his wallet; and I'm not kidding! - thanks Charles)  I believe it is his mother-in-law's recipe.  They say she makes the best fried apple pies around.  Anyway, we used my Mom's Apple Pie Filling recipe for the inside.  Our first one was huge.  Uncle Doug happened to be over here visiting so we made him eat it.   We had... (more)

A Light in the Dark  by Leah
We have gone through two days and one night with no one else getting sick.  That is answer to prayer!  I am cautiously optimistic. One BIG relief:  My mom (who should probably be nominated for sainthood) came into town yesterday.  She came over in the afternoon and made it possible for Jason and I to go spend the night in a hotel while she slept here with the girls.  Charles spent all day Thursday and Thursday night with my dad.  Jason and I got almost 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep!  It was wonderful! We came back refreshed, and I was able to... (more)

Excited for a Break...  by Lil_Mommy
So next week will be our last week of school for our school year.  I am teaching year round.  Its easier for me that way. A three week break in August is much welcomed.  I am trying to reorganize for the new school year.  I am attempting to make my house more conducive to homeschooling.  There is so much that I wish I could acomplish before the new school year.I know though that I seriously need to set some realistic expectations for myself. I tend to set my sights too high and then have a feeling of being let down.  I... (more)

50 things to do  by *Trazzi*
1. Take shopping carts for the express purpose of filling them and stranding them at strategic locations. 2. Ride those little electric cars at the front of the store. 3. Set the alarm clocks to go off at ten minute intervals throughout the day. 4. Start playing Calvinball; see how many people you can get to join. 5. Contaminate the entire auto department by sampling all the spray air fresheners. 6. Challenge other customers to duels with tubes of gift wrap. 7. Leave freaky messages on the typewriters. 8. Re-dress the mannequins as you see fit. 9. When there are people behind you, walk REALLY SLOW, especially thin narrow... (more)
The Love of a Parent  by Crystal Wetherholt
Today, I was reading Max Lucado's book, He Still Moves Stones. In it he talks about how when something matters to us, it matters to God. I am was so relieved to read that and actually moved greatly at thinking my deepest desires are important to God. I know this is true, yet when my world seems upside down I forget that God is really concerned about how I am feeling. Isn't that just silly. When I see my kids hurting, it hurts me. When my kids are full of joy and excitement, I am excited too. Why wouldn't we... (more)
Honey for a pimple? Almonds for wrinkles?  by KOCHOU
I had a terrible time when I was an adolescent with my skin. If I used what my sister used, my skin would peel. If I used what my mom used, I would break out even worse than before. As an adult, I still fought with cyst-like eruptions and blackheads, until now.   I believe that we need to get back to basics when it comes to skincare and diet. I just finished a wonderful book called "Beauty Secrets of the Bible" by Ginger Garrett. Inside this informative book there are recipes for everything from trail mix, to skincare solutions to... (more)

Obama: In the World and of It Hearts are still thumping from Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) rock tour through Europe, but back home the trip has prompted more than a few uneasy Americans to wonder what, exactly, the Illinois Senator is running for. The man campaigning for President appears to be more consumed with becoming world sovereign than leader of the United States. These days, it's easy to become confused about Obama's agenda as nations trip over themselves to throw out a welcome mat for the unconventional nominee-to-be. Using his uncanny ability to touch hearts without ever touching on policy, Obama... (more)
Live for the kingdom  by *Trazzi*
Jesus taught us how to live for the kingdom not just to die and go to heaven. That's just a bonus. Heaven is just a bonus for kingdom living. Jesus taught us how to live for the Kingdom of God. He went around preaching the kingdom. He wants us to live for the kingdom not to die for just heaven. He wants us to live for the kingdom, and die for heaven. Live for the Kingdom, preach the kingdom. ... (more)

Grocery Shopping and Menu  by JoAnn
Well today was my grocery shopping day.  I go every two weeks.  I tried to go only once a month but found I kept running out of stuff so back to every other week I went.  I've been doing a lot of reading on eating healthy and ridding our diet of unwanted chemicals.  As a result I'm trying to use up the stuff that isn't so good for us and slowly restock with things that are better.  Here is what I spent on groceries today. Aldi's 5 gallons of 2% milk seedless watermelon 4 containers of cottage cheese 10 cans of frozen juice 4 lbs. of... (more)
A Visit to the Library Gets Us on the News  by PlaidHearts
Today after allergy shots Levi, Natalie and I made a library run.  While we were there one of our local news stations was working on a news report regarding how much library traffic has picked up lately.  In the begining of the segment you see my wallet I needle-pointed as I had the librarian my card.  Then every time they showed a clip of books getting scanned for check out they were ours, and then they showed the 3 of us leaving with our stash.  You can also hear me saying goodbye to the news reporter Jeff Kulikowsky.   Click... (more)
