Dec. 17, 2009 - What I Don't Want for Christmas - A Gift Certificate of Death

Every year my mom and I play this game that we call, "What I don't want for Christmas." We just tell each other all the things we do not want, from singing fish mounts to hideous sweaters. I could be shopping in a store and something will catch my eye and I have to call my mom right away to tell her that I don't want the new Barry Manilow CD, because you never know, she may have forgotten that I despise Barry Manilow and she could be buying it for me at that very moment. I'm a good daughter for helping her to spend her money wisely.

But this . . . this is by far at the top of my I Do Not Want list. Planned Parenthood is now offering gift certificates that can be used for abortions. How would you like to get that gift? "Here Loved One, I don't want you to experience the joy a baby brings into your life because I think you're stupid and should just find your joy in material objects that don't return love, teach you valuable lessons, and brings you closer in a relationship with a Creator."

A sagerat salute to The Pilgrim over at Defending. Contending. The link in that blog post to the resource is no longer working but you can read more at Fox News.

Dec. 15, 2009 - Thank Our Military: XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL!! See Link

Thank you to my cousin, Sue, who sent this.

XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL!!

If you go to this web site www.letssaythanks.com you can pick out a thank you card and

Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently

serving in  Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a

member of the armed services.  NOTE THAT A LOT OF THE WORLD IS TAKING ADVANTAGE
OF THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SAY THANK YOU SO IT’S A LITTLE SLOW SO I RECOMMEND
YOU DO IT FROM HOME.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!  It

is FREE and it only takes a second.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?

Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know

we are behind them.

This takes just 10 seconds and it's a wonderful way to say thank you.

Please take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to

do.  We can never say enough thank you's.

Thanks for taking to time to support our military!

Dec. 12, 2009 - Will the Real Sage Rats Please Stand Up?

I was going through the photos on my camera card today and I found some pictures of sage rats from our property in Oregon. Of course my rat in my avatar and in my header doesn't look anything like these guys, but you don't find too many cartoon sage rats on the internet.

I kind of miss these little guys! We had enabled a large colony of them by feeding them scrap veggies that we threw out into our compost pile. Not a lot of it ever turned into compost, at least, not there in the pile itself. The sage rats were so cute as they nibbled and scurried about.

My favorite picture. Look at those cute little cheeks!
Of course, this one looks like me.

Wisps of grass are in the way, but I think he's smiling!
This would be Bluejane.

This one was feeling a bit more brave.
Here's Kekoa.

Stand tall and proud little guy!
Finally Eyebright!

Dec. 11, 2009 - The Holidays Are Here!

I can certainly tell that the holidays are here. Everything is push come to shove. So much to do & not enough time to get it all accomplished.

Not only has the holiday season effected our schooling, but we have also been baby sitting for my sister this week. She finally had my new nephew Wednesday night. He weighed 9lbs. 9oz. & he was 21 1/2 inches long.

We had our homeschool group's  Christmas party today. The children ate, ran & played, & made Christmas cards for our local nursing home for next Friday when we go to carol for them. Our homeschool leader made some terrific apple cider. I just had to throw that in. No alcohol & it was great!

We have our tree up & presents under it. Hopefully, I'll get the Christmas cards done this weekend & then we can devote our time next week totally to schooling.

I suppose that is about all for now. Until next time, Traci

Dec. 8, 2009 - Home School Fridays at YMCA Camp Seymour, Pierce/Kitsap County Areas

Home School Fridays at YMCA Camp Seymour

Winter / Spring 2010

Choose one day each month starting in January

Facilitated by professional Camp Seymour Naturalists

Classes:

Classes change each month, but always mix environmental education and outdoor recreation.  Based on parent feedback, this year we are going to offer two dates each month...a Friday and a Monday.  Please choose only one date to attend as we will do the same program for both days each month.  There wasn’t a second open date in March or May on our calendar, so there is only one option in those months.

Program Goals and Philosophy:

This program is designed for a home-school student to meet the following goals: 1) develop relationships with other home-school students and camp staff, 2) have fun while experiencing hands-on environmental education taught by professional naturalists, and 3) learn outdoor and recreational skills in a safe setting.  To meet these goals, we have a low student to staff ratio by limiting the number of participants to 30, have the same few naturalists lead every program, and encourage students to attend each month by varying the classes and having a whole lot of fun!

Spring Dates and Themes[1]:

Jan 25th or 29th: Monster Day!

Squid & Sasquatch!  We’ll focus on one real life monster and one mythical monster.  In Camp’s famous Squid Dissection class, kids get to learn all about cephalopods through HANDS-ON investigation of wild caught squid.  In our Sasquatch class, students will employ the scientific method to explore Sasquatch habitat and discover what Sasquatch would eat to survive.  Maybe we’ll even see a Sasquatch in Camp’s old forest?

Feb 12th or 15th: Adventure Day!

Put on your adventure hats and get ready to tackle Camp Seymour’s 37 foot tall climbing wall!  We’ll also take out our 16 passenger “Big Canoes” for a ride around Glen Cove and maybe even venture into Henderson Bay.

March 12: Wildlife Ecology!

Camp Naturalists will lead the students in several fun activities that involve ecological concepts like predator/prey relationships, food chains, skull identification and more!

April 19th or 23rd : Wilderness Day!

What would you do if you became lost in the wilderness?  Students will learn about shelter building, fire building, the 10 essentials, edible plants, and the wilderness ethic.  The plan is to spend the whole four hours in the undeveloped part of Camp Seymour.  Students may even cook part of their lunch over an open fire.  Take only pictures, leave only footprints!

May 14th: Recreation Day!

Waterfront, Archery, low tide beach walk, Marine Science Touch Tanks and Reptiles all will be open on this day.  Go where you like!

Basic Schedule

9:45 -10:00                Arrive at Camp Seymour at the upper parking lot

10:15               Class 1 –

11:45               Lunch

12:45              Class 2 –

2:00                Head to the upper parking lot to be picked up.

                        We’ll see you next time!!!!!

We will accept the first 30 kids per session that sign up.  The $20 daily fee includes program by two Camp Seymour Naturalists, program supplies and lunch.  Please include an additional $4 for a limited YMCA membership, if not a YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties member.  Pre-pay for the entire spring season and receive a 10% discount (no refunds).  Parents can participate for free and eat lunch for $8.00.  $3 per sibling discount.  Five year olds and under with constant parental supervision are welcome for free and can eat lunch for $2.

Please call or e-mail Scott Gjertson, Outdoor and Environmental Education Director at YMCA Camp Seymour to register.

Dec. 5, 2009 - States I've Been To

visited 16 states (32%)
Create your own visited map of The United States

I have no idea if anyone is truly interested in why I've been to certain states but my children may want to know some day.

  • Hawaii - Lived there for four years while Dear Man was in the Navy
  • Washington - Living in Washington two separate times, once for the Navy and once after.
  • Oregon - My home state.
  • California - Lived in California while I was in the Navy.
  • Idaho - Lived in Idaho for a whopping six months. My Papafather's family lives in Idaho.
  • Nevada - Attended the Marine Corp Ball
  • Arizona - Was unfortunate enough to "volunteer" for a couple of air dets to Yuma.
  • Utah - Spent one night at a KOA Kampground en route to Kentucky.
  • Wyoming - I've not spent a single night in Wyoming. We wanted to, but all the campgrounds were full in the area we had meant to stay.
  • Colorado - We met and visited some wonderful friends! Stayed for a few nights.
  • Kansas - Spent the night in Dodge City and Independence
  • Missouri - Another state I've been in but not actually spent the night in. We were too anxious to keep going to Kentucky.
  • Kentucky - We currently live here.
  • Tennessee - Went to A School in Millington.
  • Virginia - Another state I've not spent the night in. Just went here to help a friend get a Christmas tree.
  • Florida - Went to Boot Camp in Orlando

Dec. 4, 2009 - Bye Baby Bunting, Dear Man's Spotted Something

Tonight as we were driving away from the house Dear Man perked up at the wheel and said, "Guess what I saw, right there? Right there!" He pointed excitedly at the road in front of the car.

The family started guessing, thinking it must be something unusual for us to see, "Opossum. Racoon. Turtle."  We called to him. No, it wasn't any of those. So we started calling out more familiar creatures, "Cat. Dog." No, not those either.

"A bunny!" Dear Man said with delight.

The whole family just sat there for a moment--thinking--and then I said, "You know I don't think I've seen a bunny in forever." The family began to try and figure out the last time we had seen a bunny. It was in Kansas, in July, at the Dodge City camp ground we stayed at. A couple of bunnies had been trailing along behind a gaggle of geese.

I'm sure this is a rather odd conversation if you only see rabbits occasionally, but when we lived in Oregon we saw cottontails and jackrabbits on a daily basis. To think that all this time we've not seen a rabbit at all and until that moment didn't even realize we had been missing them! No wonder Dear Man had been so excited by it.

I'm sure one reason for not seeing very many bunnies is because we live in town, but we've done some traveling around the countryside and haven't seen any there either. Are bunnies rare in Kentucky?
