Jun. 13, 2006 - questions

Thank you FaithfulGrace for your encouraging comment. I have a few questions after another day (today) of accident after accident after accident. Why does potty training become such a hassle? Is it the temperment of the child? Is it busyness? Is it because momma gets upset? Why do some other moms seem to never have any trouble? Do they just scoop up poop off the floor and happily go on their way? Do they have a steam cleaner they can use at home or do their children just pick it up quickly? If their children just pick it up quickly, why not other children from other families? Does potty training usually last a year or so?

This is insanity--a chasing after the wind....

Hang in there. It will come. Maybe it will just take putting her back in training pants and backing off for a while. I am trying to think, but I think DS was almost three before I started really training him. Then it was easy--only a few accidents. DD was easy for daytime stuff, but was almost 6 before she was dry at night. I do remember setting them on the potty almost hourly at times, and definitely right after a meal, and I read books to them while they sat.

I think temperament has a part in it, but so does bladder capacity, which does develop at different rates for different children.

Thinking of you during this frustrating time.

I do have a friend who has potty-trained all of her children by their 2nd birthday, but I have no idea how. All three of my older children have been almost three before they were out of diapers, and one of my daughters wore pull ups at night until she was six. My baby girl is a year and a half old now and I'm not even thinking of starting potty training with her for at least a year.

I guess I figure there are so many character/spiritual issues to deal with in a two year old, such as sharing, obedience, patience, etc., who needs another fight about going potty? It will come, and will be a lot easier if you just wait until she's a little older and has a little more control.
