Hiawatha

We have really enjoyed this years sonlight theme of Native Americans & Early Americans.  I checked out of our local library, Hiawatha .  It is a beautiful poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and illustrated by Susan Jeffers.  I checked it out totally on whim, it wasn't reccommended to me - but it just looked elegant.  My oldest son just read it, he chose to read it...and then he told me about it.  I can't believe I cried, but he really understood the themes of the poem.  What a journey my son has been on, to be able to explain the significance of what he saw.  It is a wonder to look at him while he realizes the meaning of the words...It is deeper than when he realized he could read at age six!  At age ten  he is able to realize that Hiawatha was not one Native American ( he knew the character was a composite built from stories!)  He realized the power of the words, and presence of great beauty in the lines.  I'm afraid I didn't praise him well enough: I only said "Good reading!"..."yeah" was all he said back.

Tuesday Review ( A day late!)

I found a wonderful website for printable piano music!  I am always looking for extra pieces for my children, and this was a fantastic find!  www.gmajormusictheory.org  I have 4 children, and only the older ones have a chance to play.  It is just beyond words that this music is available, and not only can you print it - you can hear it on the computer (just in case you're not a music teacher).  Blessings, laura

Wouldn't take nothing for my journey now...

I don't blog very often, I'm too busy living life.  But in a moment of reflection, I thought I should blog.  We are doing well in the journey.  Our family finally has a home, and my husband finally has work.  We moved at the beginning of summer, and only started school 1 month ago.  Yet it is only today that I feel comfortable.  The older boys are very happy with our choice of school material...that in itself is heart-warming...We are using Sonlight, and the stories in it have captured our hearts & reminded us of our purpose...we are not done with our journey, but a little more content to be sitting in our boat, ever following the path of the river...

Blessings, laura

I'm gonna try to plan my menus online!

At least this day, I'm gonna try!  Usually I just print and post the list on the fridge (or I handwrite the menu)...basically this keeps the kiddos and dh from asking "what's for dinner?"...saves me lots of money,  and saves me sanity at the grocery store (which is an HOUR away!  that's right the nearest convience store is 12 miles! ) LOL here I go!

Monday : Chicken & Dumplings (leftover roast chicken from Sunday roast), Key Lime Pie, Salad

Tuesday : Parsley Parmigean Chicken (A Freezer Gourmet favourite - I keep several batches in the  freezer) , Brownies (since I'l have the oven on anyhow for 20 minutes), Salad, Mac N Cheese, Wheat Bread

Wednesday : Meatloaf (Another Freezer Gourmet fav), Mashed Potatos,  Salad, Green Beans, Wheat Bread

Thursday : Pork Chops, Rice & Tomato Gravy, Salad, Something Else?  I have to make Emily's cakes today...

Friday: Emily's Birthday Dinner- Spaggetti, Bread Sticks, Meatballs, Salad,  Cake & Icecream -have to cook for 12  plus my crew of 6 so I will figure on 20 servings!

Saturday : Brittish Night in our home...We always have Fish & Chips late in the evening, and a nice tea in the afternoon. Set Crockpot on for tomorrow.

Sunday : Roast Beef in crockpot. Bread in Machine, Salad, Green Beans, Carrot Medley, Leftover Birthday Cake (and maybe something else?)...We have an Evangelist staying with our family all day Sunday...

Hmm...Now I know why I don't blog more often!

Tuesday Review

PhotobucketI would like to share a book I found at the library...I read it one afternoon!  And with 4 kids running around, it has to be a good book to be read that fast!..I just couldn't put it down.  Frankly, I usually turn up my nose at 'self-help' books - but this one really caught my eye :
"You Can Afford To Stay Home With Your Kids : A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR CONVERTING YOUR FAMILY FROM TWO INCOMES TO ONE"
by Malia McCawley Wyckoff & Mary Snyder
Wow! What a book!  And these ladies moved from being Career moms to being Stay-At-Home moms!  The interesting bit about the book is that neither of these mothers were homeschoolers!  They stayed home, but put their kids on the bus for public school!  However their very practical ideas for converting from the now traditional 2 income household to the antiquated 1 income household are insightful...
I loved the chapter on "The (Occasional) Battle of the Stay-at-home Blues"...and The "Nitty-Gritty of Home Econmics"...For me and thousands of young women out there (I still call myself young)...we didn't get Home-Ec in high school...I didn't know how to cook when I married - my dh & my mother - in - law taught me!  I didn't know how to balance a check book or stock a pantry!
I just wish I had read this book 10 years ago..but alas...I only read it last week!...I can't wait to take it back to the library & promote it to the librarian!
What a Blessing & what a gem to find in my small town library!

Blessings,
laura

New Beginnings

I know this is an odd time of year to think about New Beginnings...but isn't the end of one homeschool year the time to think about next year?  We are so thankful for another year of homeschooling our children.  We are going to the beach to celebrate another completed year (we still have a few things to finish- but doesn't everyone?)...The Lord has so kindly given us time together!  As I think about next years school , I look forward to changing curriculum and finding new homeschool friends!  I'm thinking about using the computer or dvd for teaching some of the more difficult subjects to my older children, so that I don't miss the little moments with my little ones...If you're reading this, what do you want to do differently next year?  Or are you thinking about it yet?  Blessings, Laura

In the Wilderness

I know, I never blog...but sometimes in the wilderness it's hard to get a good connection...I don't mean the literal wilderness...but a life wilderness.  We have waited upon the Lord, and another school year has come to its close...I am reminded that Nehemiah waited for sometime to rebuild the walls, and Esther waited for the perfect moment to speak with the King...Most of all I acknowledge that it must have been a really long time for the people of Israel to wander about in the desert...We tend to say 'Fourty years in the wilderness'...the way one talks about the octane of gasoline...but 40  years was easily a generation, if not 2!  The Lord is preparing my family to do good works for His glory...

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe...

I originally named this entry "a soldier frozen"...for a few days this past month I have been frozen in my dealings, unsure of my next step...but I hear my older sons singing "step by step you lead me, and I will follow you all of my days..." I am so pleased to be waiting on the Lord for the next step. My family and I homeschool, in part because of the ministry.  My dh is a pastor, awaiting a call from the Lord as to which fellowship he should pastor...What I should say is that we began homeschooling because of the importance of "the ministry" in our lives, and now we realize that homeschooling has not only allowed us to minister to others but has also allowed us to be ministered to.  What great joy can be found when a child reminds an adult to follow the Lord...How faithful has God been to us!  We have the unique place of living in His will..

On becomming an Avid Blogger

I'm not sure I'm ready to blog...and I don't have a digital camera...but I'm so impressed by the blogs of the other homeschoolers that I've been gazing at (Is that cyber evesdropping?) that I am compelled to write something (anything) about my homeschool... First, I homeschool 2 boys, who are energetic and smart.  My oldest is an incredible artist, and I would like to figure out how to post some of his drawings on my blog...I don't have a scanner, but I thought I might take pictures and upload it into my blog...that is after, I get a digital camera (lol - it's on my Christmas wish list!)...My second son loves to read, especially fiction.  They both use Miquon for math, and Saxon 4/5 for math...I really like Miquon as it stretches their mathematical flexibility and I use Saxon for its repitition...I use the two in combination slowly and it makes math much more enjoyable...We have developed a liking for Sequential Spelling despite the fact that last year we had to put it back in the box because my children dreaded it...They now compete happily over the spelling lists...They both practice cursive handwriting, and upon occasion latin.  We have delighted in a history program called Story of the World and are still seeking a better science program...We are so blessed to learn together, and I learn more daily as well...I'm not sure I'm ready to blog, so if you read this...consider it a practice blog!

A New Beginning

I'm starting over...I actually don't mean as a 'blogger'...I have never blogged before.  I am starting anew with homeschooling and life.  I thought I might begin this new journey with blogging (if that is indeed a verb).  I  am not new to homeschooling, yet not a 'vetran' homeschool (makes it sound like you've been to war eh?)...I have homeschooled for 5 years, and I have 4 children....Hence I have a table for 6 when hubby is home.  I only homeschool my older two as the younger two are very young...I will try to keep a running account of our activities, but I am by no means attempting to blog daily.  As for the type of homeschool we have - I like to say we are "eclectic on the verge of classical"...
