The First Week Comes to an End!

Using the Draw, Write, Now curriculum Joshua learned to draw a hen,
experiment with drawing a background, colored his drawing and
wrote a few sentences to go along with the illustration. At this
early time in the year we're going to do copy work until I see that
Joshua has a more solid grasp with his handwriting skills. I
would say for the very first week, this is a great effort.
I tried a slightly different approach to
morning schooltime. I tried taking the crew outdoors.
Daniel loves to be out in the backyard and I thought that he would just
run happily around the yard and play while we did our work. Well,
nope! He wanted to be right with us grabbing at just about
everything we had out. It also wasn't a good idea to try to bring
out loose leaf paper since even the slightest breeze tried to carry it
away. And even though the weather was cool, the sun was hot,
which made it hard to concentrate especially when things were starting
to "get out of hand." SOOO, it's back to the drawing board--or
the brainstorm room. The real issue is that I
need to get SOME work done in the morning. There's just too much
to do to let it pile up until the afternoon. And by the middle of
the afternoon (when everyone else finally makes it to nap) it's close
to 2pm, and Joshua AND I are starting to drag a little. I think
our best learning/teaching time could be the morning hours. But
Joshua and I need some good quality one-on-one time. So I try to
keep those one or two subjects to the afternoon. I'd like to put
all the other work in the morning. Oh, and Caleb really enjoys being a part of the schoolday and doing his "wessons" .
His "W" for "L" linguistics is too cute. The other day I told him
he had a gecko on his shirt and he emphatically told me that it was a
"wizard". I said, "a Wizard?" And he said (even more emphatically), "NOOO, a WIZARD!"

That's a great picture! My kids hate to draw or color. Do you think this would turn someone who dislikes drawing into someone who enjoys it? Or do you think it would just be one more reason to hate it?

I love your son's paper about the hen. It was so cute. My son wrote a paper about the hurricane - check my blog out - they look so similar! It caught my attention when I was random blogging!
