Bountiful Blessings!

Week 2, Monday and Tuesday

Yesterday was a mess.  Joshua complained of an earache all day, up until supper time.  SO, after supper Joshua and I sat down to do a little catch up.  We managed through some worksheet pages while Steve occupied the younger kiddos.  It worked out pretty nicely.  Unfortunately our evenings are not very consistent or I would choose to try and do some school work then, too, on a regular basis.
I wanted to make a note here.  Add another "PLUS" or advantages to homeschooling.  Your teaching time is very flexible.  If Joshua were enrolled in traditional public school he would very likely have missed yesterday, possibly the entire day (well, he would have been at school for maybe an hour and I would have had to go and pick him up).  He would have missed out on a day's work.  But because he is homeschooled we missed some work but were able to do some catch up that evening and we are now fully caught up (today, Tuesday, we worked double on a few subjects).  And because he was here and I'm his teacher I could make sure he got the material as if he never missed it.  Many times when children miss out on lessons in public school the teacher cannot re-teach the lessons just for that student.  The student is expected to just pick up and try to catch up, most of the work having to be done at home on his own time.  This is definitely a plus in my book!  We are completely back on track as if Joshua never missed a beat!  And this can go for any side-track whether an illness of any family member or emergency situation or just having a really bad day (I've had a few ).
So today, being Tuesday, we caught up with all our material.  We started drawing a Pig in DWN.  We continued working on Telling Time and Phonics review in workbooks.  And we continued our reading in The Story Of the World.  Joshua was intrigued by the stories of the Nomads and requested I continue reading even though I had planned to stop after a few pages.  So I was able to finish the chapter.  We'll move to chapter 2 on Thursday, when I had planned to finish up chapter 1, and so we are now ahead in this subject.  That will be good when perhaps we have to slow down for whatever reason later on!
The fun came during our lesson in Science-The Animal Kingdom.  I was very nervous about how to present this subject.  The curriculum has very little in terms of visual aids or fun activities to capture the student's attention.  So I came up with something on my own.  We made lists of living and non-living things.  Joshua got into this and we had a good time.  We then took the living things and broke them down into Plants and Animals.  Again, Joshua enjoyed this (I was so relieved!).  And once we had the Animals listed we began to discuss Vertebrates and Invertebrates.  Joshua continued to be interested and we took it to researching some on the internet.  I found a great site that lists the various types of animals in each catagory and showed pictures as well (very helpful as Joshua is a visual learner).
Caleb joined in on the fun now that he had awaken from his nap and we got into talking a lot about the backbone.  We "examined" each other's backbones and even felt for Coda's (our dog).  We looked at pictures of other animals backbones on-line (a quick google search really didn't bring up much--to my disappointment).  But we did see the skeleton and the backbone of a dolphin, a man, a dinosaur, and a bird.
And then for the rest of the day Caleb would walk up to us and pull his shirt up showing his back and say, "want to see my little bitty backbone?"  Too cute!

It sounds like you had a very productive and exciting day (at least to the kids it was exciting)!

I love the flexibility of homeschooling-- although personally I love schedules and routines and sticking to them...but we have to have a loose schedule in our house just to survive since dh's work is always at crazy times...and don't even get me started on the baby! ;-) I love that my oldest can spend lots of time with him instead of being sent off to school where he'd only have a few hours a day with the baby. How can I expect them to bond and be close if it were like that?

Keep up the good work momma! I'll have to try to break down the plants and animals like that as well-- my kids would love it!
