Our 24th Year

Nov. 28, 2006 - Psalm 52:8-9

Psalm 52:8-9

But I am like an olive tree,
flourishing in the house of G-d;
I trust in G-d's unfailing love
for ever and ever.
I will praise You forever for what
You have done;
in Your name I will hope,
for Your name is good.
I will praise You in the presence of all Your saints.

The olive is an evergreen tree growing to 50 ft. in height with a spread of about 30 ft. The graceful, billowing appearance of the olive tree can be rather attractive. In an all-green garden its grayish foliage serves as an interesting accent. The attractive, gnarled branching pattern is also quite distinctive. Olives are long-lived with a life expectancy of 500 years. The trees are also tenacious, easily sprouting back even when chopped to the ground.

To be like an olive tree in the house of the L-rd, tall, sturdy, beautiful and thriving; expected to live a long time!  Our long time will be eternity with our L-rd!  Why?  Because we trust in the L-rd for our salvation!  We trust in His unfailing love.

I love this picture. I had wanted to spend some time investigating the olive tree myself. I have never, that I know of, seen a real live olive tree. I got interested in studying this when I read Psalm 128:3 "Your children will be like young olive trees around your table." I read that and thought... what in the world does that mean? I didn't find anything on a quick Internet search and I hadn't taken the time to look more closely at this analogy.
