There are occasions when my children will break a standing rule in our home. For example, we have assigned days in which each child is allowed to play video/computer games for an hour. Occasionally, one of the children will sneak off with the Nintendo DS and attempt to play a game on another day. As part of his/her correction for this disobedience I will often say:
"You are not the exception to the rule."
Sure, we are all unique and special in our own way. Sure, there are times when exceptions are made. As standard practice, however, I do not want my children to think that they are more special than the next fella because this will establish a destructive mental pattern.
As adults, we cannot believe we are exceptions. There are many "rules" or principals in life that apply to everyone. Things like: being late too often deems you unreliable, eating too much junk food will create disease, gossipping will damage your relationships, not excercising contributes to heart problems, lying damages your credibility, drinking and driving will cause car accidents and even death. It's so important that we all learn to obey well-founded rules. Disobedience just brings destruction.
Blessings,
