Positive Encouragement
Posted in Life in General

Eeyore is my nickname. Has been since the day we decided that Winnie-the-Pooh characters are really based on typical personalities. By the way, this is way before any books came out on the particular subject.
I no longer see myself as Eeyore but I do have one thing in common with the character; I tend to be negative rather than positive in my outlook. Yep! I am a 'glass is half empty' gal. I bet you can guess that my husband is the opposite. If I think one way he always thinks the complete opposite.
As a mom of a teenage son I am learning that having a positive attitude toward those things that he cherishes is really important, even if it kills me inside. There is no better time to start using encouraging, positive words then when your son comes home with a VW bus.
I have written before that I am not hung up on what cars we drive or where we live but I must now confess that there are certain vehicles that I just can't imagine stepping into let alone driving. I am rambling here so let me get right to the point. My son, with our help, bought a junker. It is a classic '66 (I can hear all the guys sighing) VW bus that has the refrigerator, table, bed, and pop up camper top. It came with dents galore and hippie bumper stickers that are in the process of being striped from the vehicle. What I don't get is how someone can imagine this heap of junk turning into something worth being seen in. Thus, my Eeyore personality pops up and I get labeled again as the ever negative mother.
Well, I have voiced my opinion (or concern depending on if your a mother or a friend of my sons) and will now let it rest. I have decided that my position is one of positive encouragement. A very important part of motherhood is knowing when being positive is important. Just don't expect to see me driving it around town!
PS. When I get up enough nerve I might just post a picture of the "thing" sitting in our driveway.

He actually got the VW?!?!
You will definitely have to post a picture of the ol' '66! Or maybe we could come and see it sometime? Where is he parking it? I thought you already ran out of room for vehicles!
I'm sorry, but I don't see you as the glass half empty type of person. You are always so positive when we're around you!
I miss all of you guys!

I think this is way cool! My cousin restored and drove a bus that he had for years. (even after the children). I've forgotten now, but he painted it like an old bomber plane and named it ... something.
What a great car to bite his teeth on. Easy to work on and fun to see the progress. Of course, I am a VW fan, drove them for years before children, but never had a bus. What fun!
Have a blessed day,
Christine
BTW, We're rethinking vacation, not sure we'll be able to stick with original and thinking about CO Springs again, around Labor day-- would it be possible to meet there? I think it's about 1/2 way between us?

May. 15, 2007 - a point of clarity

reading your post...you made a tiny flaw...you made mention of parking "the thing" in your driveway...let us not forget that volkswagen actually made a vehicle called "the thing" and that it is the official car of theMangoTimes.
as a prior vw bus owner, i only see the good in this venture. i cannot think of a better automobile for a kid to own then a bus. think about it...1)you don't have to worry about him getting a speeding ticket - it runs on a blender for an engine and goes zero to sixty in 5 different attempts. 2)you don't have to worry about him wasting his money on girls/junk - it will all be spent on that car. 3)he will learn all about fire safety/prevention (if you don't know what this means, enter "vw bus + fire" into google). 4)did you say table, bed, sink? he's nearly a home owner.
finally, i remain convinced that with the sandals, the robes, the beard...if Jesus lived today his preferred method of travel with the 12 would have been a vw bus...

I see that Anj got here first, but his comments are slightly different than mine.
Have I ever told you about my cousin? Southern CA blonde, dimples, killer blue eyes. Biola BMOC back in the day. In fact, when Colleen found out he is my cousin, she dropped her jaw in bewildered disbelief- "Mark is your cousin???" She remebered him as the "it boy" in college. Well, that very cool, surfing Reformed pastor (see http://www.gracefellowshipchurch.org/leadership.php?leadership=mark_page) bought Andy's VW bus and totally re-did the thing. Leather seats, fabulous paint. It's super cute!
Fill that glass back up- Nathan's bus could be the cutest car on your property :)

I told my husband about the vehicle your family has acquired and he was practically drooling! He would love to see pictures, before and after! And maybe even be able to peek at the actual vehicle sometime. We have a bug in the garage without an engine. It has been there for about 2 years. At least Matthew won't be driving for about 3 years now.
