When Sin Comes Knocking

Posted in Life in General

What do you do when a filthy magazine subscription finds itself in your mailbox?

As I was cleaning off my desk this morning I uncovered a disgusting, vile magazine sitting on my desk.  As my shock wore off I got a sick feeling in the bottom of my stomach.  What if my husband saw the cover?  What if my boys saw it?  What if my girls saw it?  I did not set it on my desk so someone saw it.  This is one of those times that you realize that you can not protect your children from everything.  We are very concerned at what our children hear, see, read, and watch.  I just did not think that I would have to monitor the mail also.

The front of the magazine says that we have a subscription until May of next year. I do not know who bought this subscription but I sent a letter to the publisher in hopes that we will not have to worry about another magazine showing up.

In these circumstances I am very bold and state the truth without wavering.  I sent an email and also plan on calling them to let them know how disgusted  and upset I am that they would push their sin on us in this way.

Here is the email I sent:

To whom it may concern,

I am not sure how we got on the subscription list of this magazine but I would appreciate being taken off the list.  DO NOT send another magazine.

I know you are all too desensitized to realize that your magazine is actually smut.  Over the years we have become very sensitive to this kind of material.  As we have walk away from what the world has to offer it has become evident that the product you are all promoting shows how incredibly hopeless your lives are.  The pictures and articles in your magazine show the lowest a human being can go in his sin.  How sad when there is so much more to live for.

We don’t want our children to see this disgusting, vile material.  We are raising our boys to be brave, courageous men who defend women and children rather then take advantage of them or use them.  The men you portray in your magazine are merely looking out for their own sexual interest.  They are perverts.

Our girls are being raised to be lovely.  To be a prize that a worthy young man will cherish.  They are being raised not to flaunt their sexuality but to appreciate it as a gift.  The picture of Avril Lavigne on the front of your magazine was pornographic.  She, along with the other women portrayed in your magazine are modern day prostitutes.

As we say, pagans will be pagans.  Pagans worship themselves and creation rather then worshiping the One True Living God who is the Creator of all that we see.  You have reminded us that there is a very dark, dark section of our world that live vile and ungodly lives.  Thank you for the reminder.  It makes us all the more diligent to protect, guide, and train our children to be godly and to hate the sin that you promote.

I expect to not see another one of these magazines delivered to our address.

Sincerely,

Eric and Heather Davis

May. 21, 2007 - This happened to me once

Heather, did you notice whose name was on the mailing label? These places will not comply with your request if the person making the request is not the one to whom it was delivered. I know because this happened to me once (before children, praise God!), and when I called, they flatly denied my request because it had arrived in my husband's name; only the person to whom it was addressed had the right to cancel the catalog.
I just thought I'd let you know, in case you need to launch another plan of attack to make absolutely certain that you don't ever see one in your mailbox again.

Sweetie, your letter will be read by someone handling multiple pieces of correspondence an hour, and your rant will probably not even be read by them, but if it makes you feel better, so be it. :)
But if for some reason they did read it all, do you think you showed the love of Christ, and helped that person to come closer to knowing God's love?

You did the right thing! The last commenter was a bit negative, but the Word never goes out void. Perhaps your witness will change a life!? Your wording was right and proper and kind. We had this happen when our eldest was a babe, but we called and were removed. I was so ashamed that my mailman saw our names on that trash and may have thought we actually ordered it!!

Aug. 27, 2007 - Smut in your mail box

Posted by Katie Collett

Hi Heather,

We went thru this too. :(

We got 1, then another, and another Rolling Stones magazine before I realized this would be a REGULAR thing! :(
I contacted Rolling Stones and told them to discontinue! "We do not wish to recieve this junk".
We also recieved a women's outer clothing catalog that was very smutty, and had to deal w/ discontinuing that also. :(

A wonderful blessing though, was our mailman at the time- "Blessed Fred". We loved him! He was an older man, and always smiley and super friendly. I asked him that if he noticed those magazines again in our mailbox, if he can just toss them for us!! :) He siad "sure!!" He said he didn't think it made any sense for US to be getting them. I was glad to know, that we must have made some sort of impression on him, for him to know we were not into that junk. :) Thank God! :)

Just the other day, I recieved a text message on my CELL PHONE!!!! :( I couldnt believe it!! It was selling something... and the whole thing didn't make sense, but sounded like maybe advertising a porn site, or something similar. AND>>.... I'm actually going to get charged for that somehow!! ??? I don't know WHAT to do about THAT! :(

-All the firmer we learn to stand, and further we shall grow huh?

God bless!

Jan. 25, 2008 - unwanted mail

This happened to me. I called the magazine and told them that I did not appreciate the content of their magazine and told them to remove my name from their mailings. Then I found out that the credit rating bureau give out your address. I contacted them and began removing my name and info from lists. Any time I need something to come to me by mail I request my info not go on a mailing list. It took two years, but I do not receive any junk mail. That was 8 years old.

Sadly I used to work at one of these company that sent out smut (believe me I hated it and only worked there to pay rent until I could find another job), and we used to read hundreds of these letters from the wives of the men who ordered the magazines. There is no way that someone would accidentally send out adult content. This kind of magazine also costs money to make, it's not junk mail so someone, most likely your husband ordered it. A lot of times they have it sent to their work, and the only accident that might happen is the company sends to the home because it's a billing address on their credit card. You might want to ask to see your husbands credit card bill. It sickens me to think of men with families spending money on porn instead of them..

I obviously agree with what you are saying here Heather, but your e-mail was very condescending and came across as extremely superior, self-righteous and pompous. Not at all in the spirit of the Lord.
Remember who is the judge and who is to be judged AT ALL TIMES!!!
