NO GUTS, NO GLORY

Jan. 24, 2007 - the story I put on, THE WRITING CLUB

"I've just got to outrun them!", Lena Galaxies said urgently to herself. Exactly 30 days ago she had arrived at Spacetropolis---the space city where she had thought she could start a new life---she had reported to the ruler of Spacetropolis as all newcomers were to do. That's when the trouble had started. The ruler---a very hard and difficult man named, Anogo Maw---had found out that she had just come from the city Doole, Spacetropolis' rival city. He then jumped to the conclusion that she was a spy, coming to steal their robotic army's military secrets.

16 year old Christian Powers heard a muffled shout, then, suddenly, a girl plowed, face first, into his stomach. "Oof!", he groaned, "Who are you?", he asked, after recovering from being knocked out of his' wits by a girl, who looked to be about 13. She tried to get up and keep running, but he pulled her back down. "I have to hide!", she shouted in his face. He nodded as if he understood, then ran, with Lena in tow, to his hideout. She thanked him profusely until he put his hand over her mouth. "Now", he started "Who are you and why are you running?". She hesitated, then slowly answered him, "My name is Lena...and I'm hiding from the entire robotic police force".

"What do you mean your team lost her?!?!", Anogo Maw yelled, enraged, at the captain of his team of elite robotic police. "She just disappeared, sir", said the captain in a robot's tinny sounding equivalent of a fearful voice. "Well I want you to find her at all costs!!!!".

"Why are you hiding from the robotic police force?", asked a bewildered Christian. So Lena proceded to tell her story, "I was a reject in Doole", she ended. "I see.", said Christian. "I think I can help you.", he said thoughtfully. "How can you do that?", she asked. Christian went over to a tall cabinet, he came back with a large sack. "What's that?", she asked eagerly. "I am a young warrior in training.", he stated plainly. Out of the sack, came a long, laser rifle, a lasersaber, a laser bow---a bow that continually produces laser arrows---a laser pistol and an all black, tunic-like, flightsuit. "You mean.....you're going to kill them?", Lena asked carefully. "If necessary...yes", he said.

"My grand army", started the ruler of Doole, a strong, able, man named, Talon Solo, "It is time to ready yourselves for our attack on Spacetropolis!". Cheers rose from the croud. "But there is one problem, we have nobody to lead you.", he said glumly.

"What do you mean you're going to attack Spacetropolis!", asked Lena, appalled, "Just you alone?!?!", "No, silly...I'm going to Doole to someday lead their great army on an attack that will destroy Spacetropolis!". Christian and Lena lived like this in his hideout (they had stolen materials to make beds for each), filching food, for about a month. Then, one night, Christian donned his tunic and took out all the holsters for his weapons, shouldered his rifle should he run into anybody who might recognize him and slipped away in the night, leaving only a note for Lena. Lena heard Christian closing the makeshift door, "Christian?", she called softly, but heard only the howling wind in reply. She got dressed quickly---they had stolen more clothes for each of them---then headed out into the cold night. After walking for about an hour, she stared trouble right in the face, four robotic police officers blocked the path. "Leave her alone!". Lena breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the reassuring voice of Christian, behind her. "We have orders to terminate this human immediately", said the leader of the team. Christian brought his rifle to bear, then fired four laser bolts, blowing the four police officers out of the sky. "Oh Christian", Lean said dreamily. "I know you love me Lena", Christian said. "But you must understand that I am destined to live a life of war, and could never handle it if anything happened to you", he tacked on quickly.

 10 years later

Christian---now 26--- piloted his attack fighter with effortless ease, leading the army under his command, swiftly. "Move into attack position.", he said firmly. "Ready, all smaller fighters, take care of the enemy ships coming in." he said. After the incoming fighters were taken care of, he ordered his skyscraper-destroying ships to the front-lines of the attack, "Ready....aim carefully....ALL SHIPS, FIRE, FIRE!!!!", he shouted wildly into his radio. Soon after they returned home, triumphant, it hit Christian right in the face, he had just killed Lena!

As Lena walked up to the ship garage, she saw Christian, oh good, just the one I wanted to see! But something wasn't right, he had his face buried in his hands. She came up and put her hand on his shoulder, "Christian?" she asked gingerly. Oh no, now I can hear her voice in my head, feel her hand on my shoulder. "Christian?", she asked again. His head came up, turned toward her. He was speechless. "Shhhh", she said, then, hand-in-hand, they walked away from the ship garage.

Hey,
We enjoyed your story, too! We haven't watched any Star Wars, but that story was fairly exiting! When *I* was reading it, *I* couldn't see why Christian killed Lena. Then it came to the end, and *I* found out he didn't!
So will you be writing more stories for the Writing Club? We have a new assignment (assignment #3), and 2 guideline ideas for assignment #4. You can vote on them!
