A Full Family Life:
Homeschooling and Parenting
One evening as my son Joshua was headed up
to bed he said, "Mom, I love going to bed because I get to wake up in the
morning with a whole new head full of questions."
I am a lot like Josh, only 30 years older. I’ve got 42 years’ worth of
questions. Some I’ve found answers to and others I’m still searching out.
Blogging is my way of sharing some of my findings with others who may
benefit and an avenue to help me find answers to the questions I’m still
seeking.
My blog can be summarized into three categories.
Information:
A friend once said, "Karen, if I read just some of the things that you read
I know I’d be better informed." As homeschoolers, it is in our best interest
to keep up to date on what’s going on around the country in the educational
arena. As things come up, I inform my readers of the issues that different
families around the country are facing. I also occasionally shine the
spotlight on things the public schools and the government are doing in
education that may be of interest to home educators. Examples of this would
be
Outsourcing Parenthood and "Should
Homeschoolers Take the MEAP" (a Michigan achievement test).
Vegetation:
On my blog I joke that my blog is dedicated to the ramblings of a homeschool
mother of six in desperate need of a vacation but since that is not
currently available this blog will have to do. Many days as homeschoolers we
need a little break from the routine and something to make us smile. I may
write about something that happened that day that others can relate to or a
little quote that one of the children shared. Blogging gives me a chance to
journal these thoughts for sharing with them one day and it gives my readers
a chance to laugh along with us as we journey through homeschooling.
Examples of this would be "March
Madness" and "Why
I Started this Blog".
Inspiration:
I am a Christian who seeks to glorify God in all that I do. My blog reflects
my desire to encourage other parents to press on to the high calling in
Christ Jesus. I try to make every post something to reflect and remember. We
can all grow weary in our tasks but through writing I have found a way to
strengthen my walk with the Lord and encourage others to do keep on living
for Him. See "Don’t
Bend the Wire" or "What
is a Teacher" or "Choosing
Home"
Blogging is a new avenue for sharing our lives with others. Homeschool
Blogger provides a way to meet others around the country who may share a
similar educational style or belief. This is also a way to ask questions of
and learn from those who have been at this a while. But as a veteran
homeschooler, I think I benefit more from reading the articles of new
homeschoolers. Their enthusiasm for the task ahead encourages me to continue
to press on. Blogging is another resource available to me and others to keep
focused on the task ahead. Conventions and magazines will always have a
place as a resource for me as I homeschool but blogging provides a way to
learn from those who may never publish a book or be featured in a magazine.
Karen Braun, also known as "Spunky" at
SpunkyHomeschool, is the unequivocal "Queen of Blogs" at
HomeschoolBlogger.com, according to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
publisher,
Gena Suarez Her busy blog is as varied as her lifestyle, which includes
her family hobby of Civil War reenacting. She and her husband also run a
family business called
Liberty Family
Resources. A busy mom of six, she notes that when it’s all said and
done, she will have homeschooled a total of 40 years! "Some may consider
that a desert," she notes, "but for me it is the Promised Land." You can
