How Does The Lending Library Work?

May. 17, 2008 -

It is very easy to participate in the lending library.

Following are some FAQs and their corresponding answers.

If you feel that you have questions that have not been addressed, please feel free to email, and I will reply ASAP.

Thank you for your interest!

WHY AN ONLINE LENDING LIBRARY WHEN THERE ARE LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARIES, BOOKSTORES AND ALTERNATIVES SUCH AS AMAZON.COM?
Over the past several years, I've grown a lot in my walk with God.

I've often looked for certain book titles at my local library, to no avail. The librarians often look at me confused and perplexed having never even heard of some of the books I desired to read.

When they agreed to look into putting my request on an "Inter-Library Loan" search, I was told many more times than I care to recount, "There doesn't seem to be any such title in the system."

Back to square one, I went.

Books are expensive. They're terrific, but we've never had a lot of money to simply buy whatever book "looked good".

However, as the years have passed, I've slowly accumulated a godly library all my own.

It's been a long-held goal to have enough material to warrant sharing with others in a "lending" manner.

I am excited at the prospect of sharing books of encouragement, teaching and growth with others. I look at this endeavor as a ministry in and of itself.

The Bible is to be our first-and-best-read Book! -- But the benefits of reading other materials that underscore Scriptural teachings are immense!

HOW DOES THE LENDING LIBRARY WORK?
Those who participate in the library become "Members" of the Strength & Grace Lending Library and are thus invited to borrow books of their choice.

The requested book is sent to the interested reader. Each reader is allowed one selection at a time.

When a book is returned, the next selection on their wishlist is sent according to availability.

Each member makes sure that she has at least five books on her "wishlist" at a time so there is always one book available to ship.

HOW DO I MAKE MY SELECTIONS?

When you become a member, simply choose some selections and email them to me (Carrie). I will be keeping your information in a special log.

If you find more titles that you would like to add to your wishlist, simply email again. I will continue to make notations in your log.

It is your responsibility to be sure you prioritize your list.

Periodically (bi-weekly), I will email you the titles you've provided me on your list. At this time, you can order your materials differently so certain books will arrive to your home sooner.

Email your reorganized list to me with a note to record the new order in my log.

WHAT ABOUT SHIPPING TO/FROM THE RECIPIENT?
Shipping charges to your home are my responsibility. But, you are expected to handle the task of getting the books back to me.

ARE THERE "LATE FINES" OR OTHER CHARGES IF A BOOK IS RUINED, LOST OR NOT RETURNED?
As I ship one of my books off to you for lending, I am simply trusting that you will take good care of them and will remember to return them in a timely manner... in one piece.

There will be times a book does not get returned. Perhaps it will get ruined or ripped. Maybe lost in the mail.

Hopefully, before such a thing occurs, many others will have had a chance to be blessed by the item.

You will not be charged "late fines". Nor are there any other hidden costs to your borrowing books from "Strength and Grace Lending Library".

I only ask that you do your best to be honest and trustworthy.

IS THERE A LIMIT AS TO HOW MANY BOOKS I CAN BORROW AT A TIME?
Yes. I ask that you borrow one book at one time.

As soon as the completed item is returned, a new selection will be shipped off to you.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW MANY BOOKS I CAN BORROW, MONTHLY?
No! You can read eighteen books if you're able, or just one!

It's all up to you!

IS THERE A COST IN PARTICIPATING?
This is the number one thing that I have wrestled with over the course of the last year of pondering how I would "work this all out".

We are a busy, large, hard-working family. I will be grateful for my husband's forbearance in allowing me to do this and don't want to strain our finances further.

While I do not require a payment for you to use the services of the library, I do ask a small monthly fee, as suggested, below, be paid to:
  • help defer the costs of shipping
  • replacing lost/ruined books
  • obtain new books to add to the library to keep it fresh and enjoyed.
  • Basic "publicity" (primarily making sure I have business cards to share with others, printer ink for our copy machine, and special labels printed for adhering to the inside of lending books).
Take a meeting with your heart.

If you truly cannot afford to pay the suggested deferment, because your home finances/budget will not allow it, that is fine. Simply let me know. Perhaps in the future, you will be able.

I consider the creation of this lending library to be an opportunity to minister to others.

It is my prayer that my feeble attempts at being a Titus 2 woman will allow you to be blessed!

Countless times the words within a book were soothing balm to my anxious, trembling, weary heart!

I want this same experience to be yours.

God bless you and keep you!
