Apr. 16, 2009 - Kentucky Derby

Hi everyone!! I know you are expecting me to put up a full list of Kentucky Derby entries in this post, but I regret to inform you that, as of yet, I cannot because they haven't announced the lineup yet. If you want to see some colts who are already qualified, I would suggest you go to the NTRA website and look through some articles.

.

Although I can't say for sure who will be running in the Derby, I can tell you a few who aren't. First, Midshipman. My early Derby pick was injured and won't be racing until probably this fall or next year.

Second, Old Fashioned. My other early Derby pick suffered a non displaced slab fracture in his knee after running the Arkansas and finishing 2nd. Or was it 3rd? Whatever. But he did just have surgery and is doing very well according to his trainer. They are retiring him because if he tried to come back to racing, he would be too old for the best races and he would be nowhere near as high a caliber as he has been. So he is being retired. His owner isn't sure they are going to stand him; they might sell him as a stallion prospect instead. I think that would be a wise choice, because I don't like to see 3 year olds retired straight to stud. I like to see them retire at 4 or 5 so they can race longer and get a few years on them before retiring to go have lots of babies. Although in Old Fashioned's case, retirement was necessary because of injury (although I still think giving him a year to chill before going to stud would be good).

Third, Big Drama. He isn't injured, and he has enough money to run, but his trainer and owner have decided to run him in the Preakness and not the Derby. Why, I have no clue. If you have a chance to get the Roses, go for it!! Of course, it is their horse and they know him better than I do, so they probably know what they're doing.

And fourth, the Pamplemousse. The Mousse (as he is affectionately called) is having some tendon troubles and is taking some time off.

I might still pick a Nicanor/Midshipman perfecta - i'd have the same luck trying to pick with horses that are actually IN the race.LOL
