Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina
Posted By
Antoinette
I write you sitting comfortably in my home - although that may not sound surprising - I have been without use of my pc/internet access for what seems like forever. But tonight, it is working again, and I am sitting on my couch with my laptop, watching The Sound of Music with my family at the same time. I do hope to visit with all my friends, but before I go around and visit, I wanted to at least finish my post of Biltmore Estate.
Have you ever visited the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina? If not, it is worth the effort if ever given the chance to visit it. The house covers 4 acres, totaling 175,000 square feet. It consists of 250 rooms and includes 35 guest and family rooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, and three kitchens. The old fashioned kitchens are my favorite rooms in the house. In fact, I love everything in the basement - the 70,00 gallon indoor pool, the old fashioned laundry rooms, and the multiple pantrys. I wish I had pictures to share of all this, but you are not allowed to take pictures once in the house. Also in the basement is a gymnsasium and a bowling alley.
.A favorite room of my children and husband is the two story library. This is an amazing room filled with old books and beautiful woodwork.
Upstairs on the third floor, in addition to more bedrooms, are areas where guests once
played parlor games and took afternoon tea, as well as rooms formerly occupied by ladies’
maidservants.
.
Fully electric and centrally heated, Biltmore House, at the time of its completion, was
considered one of the most technologically advanced structures ever built. It used some of Thomas Edison’s first lightbulbs, elaborate indoor plumbing for all 34 bedrooms and even had several elevators (that still work today.)
So that's it - now I'm going to see if I can come by and visit and say hi!
K, So, idk rlly what 2 post... im thinkin bout postin some of my peoms.. what do u all think? let me know cuz depending on the outcome maybe ill do it. whats new with you all? sry i havent been on much... been kinda busy with facebook n friends n stuff...... but yeah...... well, ttyl!

This Is the Day the Lord Hath Made....
Posted By
Antoinette
It is cloudy, cold, and damp outside today. But inside, it is bright, cheerful, and warm.
The fireplace is roaring, taking the cold and dampness out of the air. There is contentment within our family, although going nowhere today, and just staying inside.
We started our morning with my usual Sabbath breakfast recipe – a dozen eggs, some whole wheat bread, a cup or two of cheese, and about four turkey patties (pre-cooked) crumbled. I mix all of this together and then sprinkle the egg dish with more cheese, and then bake at 350 for 45 minutes. This gives us a protein rich egg dish to start our day, without all the usual mess and hassle of an egg, sausage, and toast breakfast. We had bought cinnamon rolls the day before to have as our breakfast dessert.
So far today, we have read a chapter in Psalms, Proverbs, and a portion in I Samuel 13, 14, 15 and I Chronicles 5 and 9 -this is the story of the reign of Saul.Besides having generous portions of Bible reading as a family, we have played a game of Scrabble, watched the movie, Toy Story, a board game of Monopoly, and read from our historical novel( a G..A. Henty book) while many of the children colored pictures with fine art- grade precision pencils.
My niece was with us this weekend. She arrived Friday evening, as we were preparing our pizzas and breadsticks. We sat at the table together, and before eating, we had prayer, and sought forgiveness from one another for any transgressions against each other in the past week.We remembered as a family how Jesus died and paid the penalty for our sins against Him.His blood was poured out and His body was given up for us.After pizza, we read a portion in the Bible, played a game of Scrabble, and hung out in the family room around the cozy and warm fireplace.
I am still having an internet connection problem – therefore – my lack of posts.I have a lot to share and find myself seriously behind in things I’d like to share, such as –
Our trip to Biltmore Estate and our tea time with Grandma in August
Our first visit to Ruth’s farm in Tennessee in August
Our Family Camp here at Ranch Shekinah in October
Our second visit to Ruth’s farm in Tennessee in October
Our week of celebrating the Biblical Holiday, Tabernacle of Booths, in Tennessee with Ruth and her fellowship group
Ruthie’s 11th birthday party – A Victorian Tea party that we hosted 17 little girls and some of the mom’s
Add to all of that, I still haven’t posted on the foaling of Hot Shot and Willow!
Although I am way behind in posting, I have been enjoying my family thoroughly. As I mentioned above, we took another trip to Tennessee just a few weeks ago.Just as soon as we got home from that (we were away nine days) it was Ruthie’s birthday – we took all week getting ready for her Victorian Tea Party.
There have been a lot of changes within our family since our summer trip to the Bill Gothard Institute of Basic Life Principles seminar, followed up with two inspirational visits to Ruth’s wonderful family in Tennessee. I'm looking forward to sharing what's new with our family, and also to visit with you. See you soon (I hope!)

Ten Things I've Been Doing Instead of Blogging: A Photo Essay
Posted By
Kelly
So I haven't posted in a bit and I'm sure you've all been hysterical with anticipation and concern for my welfare.
Please, I can explain. Take a look at what I've been up to.
1) Digging graves in the backyard by moonlight. As you can probably imagine, this is both time consuming and stressful. I don't feel much like blogging afterward.
2) Being discovered while burying the bodies. Not. Fun.
3)Beating off the starving kittens that follow me home mewing pitifully.
4)This actually happens before the beating off- my little brother making friends with the demon-eyed varmints. THEY NEVER LEAVE WHEN YOU DO THIS.
5)Getting ultrasounds. No pictures to preserve my last shred of dignity/decency. Also because I didn't bring my camera. Don't worry- I'm not pregnant. Or if I am, my baby looks something like this:
So hopefully I'm not.
6)Smelling my feet. DARNIT. Sandal weather is over.
7)Going to the Cheesecake Factory (ELLYN! I see why you love this place!!) and bringing home plastic containers of decadence.
8)Curling my eyelashes. Naturally, this takes up a great deal of my time.
9)Reading great literature.
10)Sleeping. It IS cold/ swine flu season, people! Gotta keep my immune system strong!
And with all of these non-negotiable activities to attend to, it's no wonder that I haven't blogged in forever and a half*! So many things have been neglected (see below).
I also got my learners permit (WOOT!). It cost 50 bucks and earned me the nickname 'Kelly the Puffy Whale with Really Bad Hair**' but anything to drive, right? Right.
What’s been happening around here since I wrote last….
.
.
Given it’s been almost two weeks since I posted, a lot has happened. My internet connection has not been working, so therefore, I have been unable to check my emails or my blog.Although I’ve missed both of those things, I have been very busy enjoying my family, our friends, and the fall season.
.
.
I’ve been enjoying…
This autumn season. We have a lot of apple trees here at Shekinah Ranch. In past years, I was too busy “doing school” to go out and harvest the apples .But, this year, I’ve taken the time() to go out with my children to pick the apples, freeze them, and even make some of my first apple pies.I had fun with Ruthie and Jacob collecting them, and enjoyed my time with Rachel in the kitchen getting them ready for the freezer and making the pies.
,
,
I went riding with Rachel and her friends through the trails here at Ranch Shekinah last Saturday afternoon and into the evening. This was the first time I’ve gone riding since early summer.I rode Maria – and although I rode Western (English is my preferred mode of riding), she was perfectly behaved and did everything I asked. She was like riding a “button horse” – this is what I call a horse that does everything you want it to do.She stopped immediately when asked; slowed down when I indicated that’s what I wanted, and went fast when I desired. It was like she had a gas and a brake pedal. We rode for hours.
.
Rachel and I went to a “flea market” (my first ever) in Shipshewana, Indiana, with some friends.I bought a bushel of green peppers for $5.00; and two bushels of peaches for $26.00.We brought them home and froze them for the winter.
.
.
.
.
Here's something else that's been going on here at Ranch Shekinah. We gutted our barn - it's our autumn project. We've had lots of help from our good friends, the Vales.
,
.
The most recent is the family camp we just had. We had approximately fifty people attend.Boat rides, horseback riding, good food, and lots of fellowship. But, that's another post for another day!

Getting a Learners Permit and other adventures...
Posted By
Kelly
I finished Drivers Ed in August. It's almost October and I haven't got a learners permit yet. We planned to go several times and never went and then today, we actually went, got in the door, stood in line, got up to the counter- and went home. Because apparently they don't accept the ID's that they give you as proof of who you are. The MVA demands a birth certificate, a social security card, a DNA sample no more then a week old and your left thumb. In a airtight, sterile plastic container. So we're going to go again on Wednesday so that I can FINALLY begin the NINE MONTH wait to get a real drivers license. I have a theory. All the tests and Drivers Education and waiting in line and being asked how much you weight and getting a funny look when you tell them- that's the real test. If you actually get in the car with a stoic old man to go through the obstacle course, you've already proven that you can survive in the rat race that is I95 (and adulthood) without screaming and threatening someone with a broken pencil. That's what they really want to know. And it's probably really character building. Or mind numbing. Whichever.
With relative freedom being only nine months and a bit away I've been thinking about my immediate future a bit more. If my calculations are correct I should finish highschool around the same time that I get my drivers license and then I'll be able to get a real job. I'm not sure exactly what that job will be and I'm not sure how many classes -if any- I'll be taking at the community college right away. Who knows, I might take one this spring...that would actually be pretty cool, come to think of it. When I took my English placement test over there, I'm pretty sure I scored in the highest English class and if I remember correctly, if you pass that class you've finished your English requirements to get your AA degree. So that would be pretty awesome if that's the case.
I've always thought that once I got my drivers lisence I would become a full-time nanny and that's a very distinct possibility, but another possibility has cropped up. I just might try to get a job at Whole Foods. They start you out at $10 an hour and it has really great perks, like 20% off everything- and I shop there a lot. I LOVE that store.
It's just an idea, but those are some of the things rattling around my brain right now.

I'm reaaally thinking about deleting people from my friends list who are no longer posting. It just makes things easier for me. So if my friends list is suddenly much shorter, that's why. :) And if I accidentally delete you and you ARE still posting, feel free to scream and rant at me. :P
The brother whose picture is in my last post happens to be a boy scout, and as a member of that sacred group of scrawny adventurers he is required to camp out a certain number of nights. So this last weekend was one of those camping weekends and he and my mom went off to the woods with their group and I had the house to myself. Sort of. Except for my dad and my brother. So mostly. It's was nice, let me tell ya. :) THREE nights with no "Kelly! What are you doing? Can I come in? I want to tell you something. I CAN'T tell you through the door. [kick kick kick] Let me IN! I want to TELL you something!" or tuneless humming just because he knows it drives me bonkers or ANY annoying little brother behavior. B.L.I.S.S. :P
And on Saturday night I had a fun little impromptu daddy-daughter date night. With the absence of my mom there was also an absence of dinner, so my dad and I went to this huuuuge mall about a half hour from our house. Cause we felt like it. It's got an Imax theater, how's that for cool? If we'd left earlier, we probably would have seen something but it was not to be. Something else that was not to be- P.F.Changs. There's another one nearer to our house, so hopefully we can try again when there isn't a forty-five minute wait. >.< Instead we went to Panera Bread (also in the mall) and it was soooo goooooood...I got the chicken ceaser salad and a no doubt high-fructose-laden frozen caramel coffee...confection. It was also delish. And we watched a bunch of episodes of The Mentalist. I wonder if Kev and Mom can go camping again this weekend...:D
If you've seen the movie 'Penelope', you probably remember the Reese Witherspoon character whipping around on her awesome Vespa. I'll say it right now- I LOVE VESPAS. I want one. If you could drive them in the rain, I would buy one instead of a car. Even their name ('Vesspaaaaa') sounds so much cooler then 'moped'. Psh. Who wants something called a 'moped'? Seriously.
That said, I laughed (albeit at myself) when I read this excerpt from this stupid blog (called 'Stuff White People Like):
'As it stands, every single white person on earth either owns, has owned, or is dreaming about owning a Vespa Scooter. And why not? They are Italian, feature vintage design, low emissions, make the rider look more sophisticated, and they carry a little bit of risk. In fact, were it to have a liberal arts degree and a steady income, a Vespa scooter would possesses every important quality that a white person looks for in a spouse.'
Well...it's sort of incredibly true...:P
I can just picture myself on one of those babies, can't you? With my awesome vintage chic skirt and big sunglasses and ballet flats...they might just push soft-top Jeeps down to my SECOND all-time-favorite vehicle. :P
and didn't run because I still need shorts to run in
and hunted down some shampoo because I think I'm allergic to the kind I've been using
and did ALMOST ALL MY SCHOOL BEFORE NOON!!! *amazement*
because I was going with my older brother to take pictures of my younger.
and we did.
and wasn't that interesting.
That's the brother.
Yeah.
The above picture was taken while I was in Kentucky, and he was goofing off but he was comfortable with the camera. When we went with my brother to take pictures he got...awkward. He sort of has two 'picture' modes- awkward and goofy. Neither really work well for portrait style pictures.
So every time Eric told him 'cross your arms', his shoulders would jerk forward, his back would arch, his chest would concave and he would grip his ribs with his hands, et cetera, et cetera, until he looked like a poster child for the NSPCC.
The same or something similar went for just about everything we tried to do. I should note that Kev's got legs up to his eyeballs and weighs about sixty pounds, so when he looks awkward he looks awkward. There's no room for tensity or oddly placed limbs. Generally he looks something like Puddleglum from The Silver Chair. And then the sun was hurting his eyes, apparently. So we got a lot of squinty eyed, slumping shots.
But it was fun! I really love photography, even when the subject is a bit difficult (:P) and it's really awesome helping my older brother, who's got all sorts of cool new equipment to break in. :)
Oh yeah, and I don't usually check out this site, but for some reason I did a few days ago, and they've got quite a lot of extra long skirts over there, Pretty cool! I'm seriously considering buying the 'Perfect Jean Skirt'. :)
