I was reading a blog the other day of Jeannie Fulbright. It was in her side bar and from this summer but as I commented I realized I had a lot to talk about on it. And I might as well blog about it myself. The link to her blog entry I am talking about is this... http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/JeannieFulbright/2645/
The Presidents of the United States full names and order, The Declaration of Independence, The Periodical Table of Elements....
Sure these are all things that are important to know. But with technology and Internet etc., is it really crucial to have these in our heads? What did memorizing poems and such do for you as a person? Do you remember anything you memorized in school? Is it making you a better person because of it?
So what is important? Is our goal as a homeschooler just to follow the public schools system? What was the reason behind your homeschooling? If you are like me it is to be different. Not follow the mold of the schools. But to break away and make my school rich with God's love and word. To instill in my children lasting knowledge that grows and molds them rather than floods their minds with things that will pass away with this world.
As Jeannie inspired me with her blog that you don't have to start your kids memorizing the normal material. Why not fill their heads with things and lessons that will carry them through to the other side.
To memorize from the very words of our Creator! When our children are having a tough day - to hear your six year old mumbling to herself - "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!" To hear your teenager remembering "Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways Acknowledge Him and He will set your paths straight." Oh the joy.
Do you really find yourself drawing from past memory work of Mother Goose from childhood? Sure it can be fun. But is it life changing?
Wow. To think we have the manual right before us. We can pour over books and poetry but God gave us the ultimate text. Right before us are words that even the youngest member of the family can benefit from greatly!
How to start? I have purchased a great CD that has scripture set to music. Simple as that. Sing it! Use it in your handwriting class. Use it in your art! Draw a picture to go along with the scripture. Cook it! I am the bread of life! How else can you think to get your kids learning and memorizing Gods word? In ways they will remember in their time of need.
Break out of the mold! And let the Master mold you!
