Unit Planner - Chinese New Year

The China Unit Planner may also be of use.

1. History of the Chinese New Year.

What is it also known as?

Is it possible to find out it’s origin? Or it’s purpose? How long does it last?

 

Use books and websites as resources.

2. Preparation.

Look at the preparation taken in the lead up to the event. For example, the present buying and the decorations. Re-create where possible and research the meaning and significance.

3. Look at the traditions.

For example, the giving of red packets. Look at the clothing worn. Why is red so important? Re-create where possible.

Consider the taboos and superstitions linked with the New Year. For example, house cleaning.

1. Location:

Bordering countries, oceans, landscape and rivers. Capital city and Famous Landmarks. Compare it’s size to our country.

Use maps and globes to demonstrate. Internet resources and books.

2. Foods:

Look at food types and compare ways of cooking and eating to ours. Look at changes in utensils and other equipment.

Plan and create meals to demonstrate, using internet resources and books as resources.

3. Games and Crafts:

Find out about relevant crafts and games.

Re-create these where possible. Use the internet and books as resources. Visit museums for possible relevance.

4. Children’s Daily Life:

Investigate schooling, a child’s role in the family, or perhaps create a daily diary depicting life from a child’s perspective.

Use books and the internet as information resources.

5. History:

Investigate China through history, making notes of important dates and events.

Look at Chinese Dynasties throughout history. What effects did each have on the country?

6. Literacy:

Write and illustrate a story relating to something learnt.

2.  Religions and Traditions:

Investigate the most common gods and ceremonies.

Books and internet resources. Look out for TV programmes that may show related topics. Visit museums for possible related artefacts.

3.  Foods:

Look at food types and compare ways of cooking and eating to ours. Look at changes in utensils and other equipment.

Differences in foods for the rich and poor.

Plan and create meals to demonstrate, using internet resources and books as resources. Visit museums for possible examples.

4.  Games and Crafts:

Find out about relevant crafts and games. Investigate how the Egyptians made paper.

Re-create these where possible. Use the internet and books as resources. Visit museums for possible relevance.

5.  Famous Pharaohs:

Choose one or two Pharaohs to look at in depth Find out about lifestyle, personality traits, and beliefs. If studying more than one, compare.

Use internet resources, books, and museum displays to help build up a picture of what life was like as a Pharaoh.

6.  Children’s Daily Life:

Investigate schooling, a child’s role in the family, or perhaps create a daily diary depicting life from a child’s perspective.
