Shucking corn

C4 watching intently!

The children shucked the corn and mashed the corn. I rolled up spoonfuls in the husk and baked it.

The finished product, Kneel Down Bread. It is not really bread but more like a corn pudding. It was called kneel down bread because the women would have to kneel down to mash the corn and then it was baked like bread.

They all enjoyed eating their 'bread'.

We are getting our wonderful activity/craft ideas from a book called More Than Moccasins.

We are studying Indians for a couple of weeks. Here the kids are making vests out of paper bags. I think it took longer to make the vests then they wore the vests! Oh well they still had fun!

The fever has found C4 !  This fever is horrible! High fever, vomiting and red spots!

We also started our Sonlight curriculm today. The boys love the books and wanted more!

Here they all are coloring a rainbow with all seven colors - the boys doing the best they can putting it in the right order. They also did a worksheet on the water cycle. That was part of their science today.

If you could pray for little C4 to get better really soon - it would be much apperciated!

The boys love their science book, The Berenstain Bears Big Book of Science and Nature. We had been reading about the science fair and Papa Bear made a jet powered airplane. So I had daddy give it a try with the kids. They all had a great time!

Here they are watching daddy make the paper airplane

• 3.14.2008 - More unit study fun!

Posted in school

Spring!

Our theme this time around is Spring. We will also be incorporating a study on Easter next week. I will adapting some of this unit study.

I am really enjoying our unit studies. Right now I am using them in conjunction with our Sonlight curriculm. I don't know if I am going to continue Sonlight in the Fall or just continue on with unit studies.  Unit studies are great because I can put something in there for every age.

Here are some pictures from this week.

C2 being the wind

C4 enjoying watching us

Playing with watercolor pencils

I thought this would be a good idea! Don't try this at home!

• 2.24.2008 - Our family unit study continues

Posted in school

We have been having a great time doing our family unit study. We have come up with our 'family rules' and chore charts. Things are running a little smoother around here. Our family rules are more of a training guide, a vision of what we want our family to strive for. I know nobody is perfect, only Jesus himself, but that doesn't mean we can't strive to act better towards one another!

I want to work on a family tree as well. I don't know how deep and far I want to go with that.

I also want to incorporate talks about eating well and getting plenty of physical activity. C1 loves 'snacks' but his idea of snacks is more my idea of 'treats', so I am trying to establish what is a snack versus a treat.

We spent a nice weekend together as a family. The sun was actually out this weekend and we spent our time outside! It is so wonderful to play outside as a family!

If any of you have any ideas of more things we can do for our family study I would love to hear them!

• 2.19.2008 - Family week!

Posted in school

We are going to be doing a unit study on "Family". I really like the idea of unit studies, and our family lately hasn't seemed very friendly to one another. I am hoping this will jump start our relationships back to where they need to be, and growing from there.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun is actually out today! Woo hoo! As C2 walked by I saw his shadow/silhouette on the walll and I did an outline of all the kids silhouette. I got my inspiration from a scene in the movie Mary Poppins!
Here are the kids in front of their silhouettes.
The baby in front of her's.
We had a family meeting last week and came up with some family rules. I really think they will help the atmosphere around our home. Here are some pictures of the poster we made.
We read some poems and sang some songs about our bodies and our family this morning, the kids had fun with that. We also made a list of our family members and made a list of what they contribute to the family.
I am excited for this week! Keep checking back I will post more on what we are doing!
I have started doing 'school' with C3. We are doing fun little things from Letter of the Week. The week we are going to learn about 'Cows'. I checked out some books from the library, we read poems, color, sing, she has a new vocabulary word, shape and number to learn each week. She seemed to enjoy our school time togeher this week.
Here she is coloring a picture of her cows for her learning poster.
