• May. 15, 2008 - Standardized testing visited...

So, school per se has been less books and more nature study these past few months.  We have been learning the local flora and fauna here at the beach.  We also spent 3 weeks camping in the desert wilderness of Arizona becoming one with the creatures there (jackrabbits, coyotes, desert fox, and cactus aplenty).  I suddenly realized last week that I hadn't yet made plans for the dreaded 'standardized test' which is mandatory for our homeschooling situation.  I made arrangements for the CAT test to be delivered here in 2 weeks then headed to Barnes and Noble (with my Christmas gift card!) to buy the Spectrum Test Prep book.  Turns out, even though we've only completed about 2/3 of our 1st grade math and less than 1/3 of our language arts work, Maya (7) breezed through the test prep!  I was thankful I had purchased the book because there were definitely different 'presentations' she had not encountered before, but with a simple explanation she was able to apply what she knew and forge ahead...
I can't wait for the real deal... I realize it is a little petty since I can already see for myself that I have thoroughly covered all the material she is expected to know, but I can't wait to show off those test scores to the person in my close family who constantly undermines and invalidates my decision to homeschool.
We'll show them...
