Back again

Well we are all moved and so far it went well. The flight was great really. We are waiting on our stuff to get here and we are moving to a bigger place next month.

The girls are so happy to be with their dad, and we were here for the Holidays too, so that was great!

We are learning from the area, as most of the books are en-route still too. Living overseas gives you so much to learn with out books though. We have a program to help learn the language and the older girls are finally starting to want to learn it, which is so good, since we will be here for 3 years.

Moving again

Posted in Life

Well once again we are moving. We spent the last 2 days driving from PA to MN. Now we spend a week packing our house and moving again. This time we move overseas. Some days I feel like we do nothing as far as school work, but I then I notice how much they are learning from life, and well military life adds some extra lessons to that too. Some are harder then others, 9 months with out dad around, some are good though, traveling around meeting new people, seeing other countries.
The girls are excitted I am excitted and frazzled trying to make sure everything is in order for the move.

More books

Posted in School

SOTW came in last week, it is really nice. The girls really like it. I think there might be something to the classical approach once they start reading on their own some more. We got 2 science books in too; they can't wait to do them. They are hands on type so they are looking forward to that, but then so am I too. Course I got Breanna a math book and she got 100% on the end of book review before we did the book, so she is waiting on her next level book to come in. I have learned my lesson, from now on get 2 math books at a time. Katelyn uses Miquon and Breanna uses Developmental math, course they have to use different courses too. Breanna just did not like the rods at all, so no point using a Rod based math for her.

Still waiting to move again, looks like another holiday away from my husband.

Back in PA

Posted in Life

Well we have made it back to PA. It is nice to be home again too.

We have found a homeschool group and are planning a trip friday with them too. I can't wait. I am ordering the girls shirts this weekend too, then they can wear them on our homeschool outtings.

Now to change all the state requirments over and notify people here that we are here. We are hoping to move before Thanksgiving, but I am not getting my hopes up to much over that either.

I ordered more books again. I am trying a different math program with Breanna then with Katelyn. I finally got the Story of the World and the Active book and workbooks, Rod and Staff, for Danelle in Pre-school.

One more day

Posted in Life

Till my mom gets here. The girls made signs to hold at the airport for her. They are so excited to see Nanny. We have so much to do before we leave Sat too though. The house is clean, the laundry is 90% finished. We have to pack, and finish the last of the laundry.
We mailed out a box to Tim again today, and one to Alex, crafts for her and her sister to do when she gets home for the hospital. The girls got cards for Alex today too, they go out tomorrow. Alex is my best friend’s daughter that has cystic fibrosis (http://www.cff.org for more info). She is a very brave little girl, with strong, incredible parents.
I finally started sewing on Morgann's Halloween outfit today. It should be easy, Danelle's is the same, but different fabric and Katelyn's is almost the same too. Breanna's I know will be easy so I haven't started it. Oh and I have no idea what to dress Terresa as at all.

Faith and life

Posted in Life

I just bought the girls religion courses, 3 of them, Katelyn and Breanna got their own, and I got one for Morgann Danelle to share and I am in a religion crisis myself. I am wavering between Roman Catholic, what I was raised and keep going back to, and Orthodox Catholic. There is so little difference on the outside, and I can't go to services till I go home next week, there is no Orthodox close to me right now. I am buying a book that is written for Roman Catholics about Orthodox too see what it has. I have learned so much of about the religion since teaching the girls, and while it has helped my relationship with the church and God, I still have this thing in my head about the Orthodox Church. The little thing in my head is what has always brought me back to the church, so it is hard to listen when it is a different church and it is very hard not to listen too it at the same time. Hubby is little help, he will look into either, he was raised Lutheran and has already started looking into converting and goes to Mass with me. He says he will learn about Orthodox catholic if that is what I want.

Dick and Jane books

Posted in School

Are great too. We have a set of 12 of them, it is a box set hubby bought at Sams. Katelyn read 2 books tonight, 3 or 4 stories per book. Short ones but still, she only had 2 words she had to get help with. Breanna is doing great with reading and math. I am ordering more math books next week for them. I am thinking of changing Breanna's math though. She is doing great with the worksheets I print and our math, but the course I have for her, she is not getting at all.
I am also looking into getting or trying to make pocket charts for them. Math, Reading, and Science, I have them done in my head. I want a time line type one in my head for Religion and History, which we tie together some, but still 2 lines. One AD one BC. I can't wait to move to set it all up though.

Going home

Posted in Life

The girls and I are going to my mom and dad's house for a few weeks, next week. I can't wait. I miss my family so much right now. Plus it will be the last time in a long time we see them, some it will be 2 years till we see them again. We will be in Korea by Thanksgiving. It has been such a long time since we started the process, that it hardly seems real to me, and till I am holding plane tickets for me and the girls in my hands it might not sink all the way in either. My mom is flying up next week, course the girls think she is coming the day after she is coming so they will be SO surprised when we get her a day early.

Writing the Road to Reading

Posted in School

I think this might be the best reading course there is. I love it, my girls love it. They both (Katelyn and Breanna) work together at the same time, on different levels and it totally WORKS! Unit studies did not work last year, but if this is an indicator, we are going back to them.
Katelyn is much farther then Breanna, but we do a  review for 5-10 mins which is Breanna's main lesson, then we do 5-10 mins on the next lesson, Breanna either does her writing then or pays some attention to Katelyn's lesson. Then Katelyn does her writing and reading and when Breanna is done I read her an earlier reader. Katelyn is reading some of them, but only to her sisters when she wants too. She is still a shy reader and doesn't like reading as much as being read to. Think she can get wrapped in to the book if someone is reading it instead of her reading it still at this point.

Course math is going well, and Faith and Life is an incredible religion course too. Science and History we are starting to add some. I like the classical approach, but will probably stay with what I have.
Danelle is doing more and more with us, I think by Jan she will need her own books.

From her site:
The focus here is on low-cost, home-cooking from scratch.  The recipes are all tested in a real kitchen with hungry children, stalking cats, begging puppies and a playful husband underfoot.  The ingredients are affordable and readily available in most areas.

She has so many great tips, recipes and links too.

Park day

Park days are such fun. The girls had a blast; we did a little shopping in the morning since we were in town anyway. Then we got a picnic lunch and went to the park. One nice thing about school season, no one is at the park. The girls eat; played on the swings, and slides, course they loved the merry-go-round thing. Terresa slept in the stroller most of the time we were there. Then it started raining and we came home. Course it wasn't raining once we left town, so we came the long way home, everyone but Katelyn napped on the way home. Then about 2 mins after we unloaded the van the storms started. So we had a long evening as we were all suck in the house when I told them they could play outside when we got home. They never get bored outside, one nice thing about the farm. In Alabama they never wanted to play outside very much, now they never want to come in.

Terresa weighs 18.8lbs. Course Morgann weighs 29.8lbs I am going to find out tomorrow how much Danelle weighs, I bet she is not much heavier then Morgann though.

Editted - Danelle is only 33.6 lbs.I can't believe she finally broke 30lbs.

Monday morning

What a great start to our school week we had. All the girls (well minus baby Terresa) sat in on Bible study today, Katelyn and Breanna remembered their reading lessons from Friday, and did well on todays. Danelle and Morgann did a show, song and dance for us, ABC's but it was cute, Danelle (3) has it memorized, and she is teaching Morgann (2) who has most of it down. They danced in a circle holding hands and clapping every so many letters, it was cute.
Then we worked with balloons for science and fun, course that has lead to a full day of playing with them. Only 2 have popped, and one outside and one inside, and Terresa didn't get a hold of any of them. The oldest 4 have played so well with them it is cute. They dropped them to see which feel faster; big ones, small ones, red or yellow. Then Katelyn (7) though to test other things in dropping, so paper went, books, toys, pacifiers.
Course right before Dinner the day went down hill, Danelle got sick, no idea why, she is better now, but I am expecting her to do it again tonight or tomorrow. I hope she doesn't but she tends to get sick seem better and get sick again.

WooHoo, mail call

Posted in School

The rest of the books I ordered came in today. We did the first day of Writing the Road to Reading today, it went really well. Katelyn sat in she is doing handwriting practice with it. She did her reading too, she is doing great. Now Monday, we can start religion class and Breanna can start her math. Good thing we have the party tomorrow or the girls would want to do school work all day. Course I am sure they will want to, but I think helping me with Morgann's cake will be enough to keep their mind of it for a bit.
Danelle wants to do school to, it is so cute, and of course Morgann just wants to copy Danelle.  I am going to print them some pages off the computer.  I really want to get them either Preschool Workbook Set or Rod and Staff Preschool Curriculum. I am not sure which to get, hopefully I can pick on soon. Maybe I will make Tim pick of them since I can’t seem to.

Morgann's Party

Posted in Life

Well Morgann is 2; I can't believe my little baby is 2 already though. Going against what we talked about and planned for the last few months, we will do a party here now, this weekend, and then something again with Daddy when we move. Which should prove interesting, since for about 3 months we have talked about Daddy being there for her birthday party, but hey she is only 2 so she will understand having two parties, or at lest not care/notice right.

The weather was so yucky we did nothing today. Tomorrow we have to go shopping, send the papers to the school district for the school year. Also I have to get the tags for the van. Hopefully the weather is better then today, the weather people say it will be nicer, but we all know how much I trust them.

Books, Books and more Books

Posted in School

Well Breanna's reading book got here. I need to re-read it all before starting, it is very different then what Katelyn used. I pretty sure she will like it. She loves writing so how can she not love to read by writing really?
I ordered the oldest 3 remaining books. Just waiting for them to come in now. Although I might have ordered a book not overly needed, but that is ok. It will be good for extra writing practice at lest. Katelyn is finally starting her CCD course this year, so she will be a year behind on her 1st Communion. The other girls got theirs too, so they will start too. If nothing else, Danelle and Morgann will be able to sit through and get something from it. We are going to start adding more extra's in to their schooling too. They are doing really good. Course I need 2 more books and everyone will have everything for the year. They are books that the girls are almost done with and so I am getting the next level now.

The weekend is almost here

Posted in Life

The oldest two stayed with their grandmother last night. They had a blast, their cousin came over this morning, they love having a new cousin and helping with her.
It was a nice day with the toddlers and baby. We cleaned a little, but we played a lot and danced a good bit. They love music it was a lot of fun and very relaxing. Course it left a mess for me to clean up after bedtime. Danelle has memorized the ABC song; she is trying to tech Morgann it.
Tomorrow is normally a day off of school, but I think in the morning I will work with the girls some. We are going shopping after lunch. Getting some winter tights and shirts for the girls.

School started

Posted in School

We have finished our first few weeks of school and all is going well. The girls are happy, and are really getting the material this year.
We have not really changed material, I make our curriculum up, is it based of
Catholic Heritage Curricula
. I have their lesson plans for each grade; I don’t like their math course, which is the main change. I also do my own PE course.
Course next week I have to have the state forms turned in. So much is meaning less, since we will be moving in a few weeks. We will not be here to turn in quarterly reports or do testing, yet I have to do the paperwork as though we will be.
I am hoping to get more studies for the girls next month. We have been working on Reading, Math, PE and Religion only still. We will be adding Hangul, History and Science courses.  I have a basic outline for the school year, although it will be flexible, based off when we move, when we get the material in, also how well the girls adjust to the increase in course load.
