More books

Posted in School

SOTW came in last week, it is really nice. The girls really like it. I think there might be something to the classical approach once they start reading on their own some more. We got 2 science books in too; they can't wait to do them. They are hands on type so they are looking forward to that, but then so am I too. Course I got Breanna a math book and she got 100% on the end of book review before we did the book, so she is waiting on her next level book to come in. I have learned my lesson, from now on get 2 math books at a time. Katelyn uses Miquon and Breanna uses Developmental math, course they have to use different courses too. Breanna just did not like the rods at all, so no point using a Rod based math for her.

Still waiting to move again, looks like another holiday away from my husband.

Dick and Jane books

Posted in School

Are great too. We have a set of 12 of them, it is a box set hubby bought at Sams. Katelyn read 2 books tonight, 3 or 4 stories per book. Short ones but still, she only had 2 words she had to get help with. Breanna is doing great with reading and math. I am ordering more math books next week for them. I am thinking of changing Breanna's math though. She is doing great with the worksheets I print and our math, but the course I have for her, she is not getting at all.
I am also looking into getting or trying to make pocket charts for them. Math, Reading, and Science, I have them done in my head. I want a time line type one in my head for Religion and History, which we tie together some, but still 2 lines. One AD one BC. I can't wait to move to set it all up though.

Writing the Road to Reading

Posted in School

I think this might be the best reading course there is. I love it, my girls love it. They both (Katelyn and Breanna) work together at the same time, on different levels and it totally WORKS! Unit studies did not work last year, but if this is an indicator, we are going back to them.
Katelyn is much farther then Breanna, but we do a  review for 5-10 mins which is Breanna's main lesson, then we do 5-10 mins on the next lesson, Breanna either does her writing then or pays some attention to Katelyn's lesson. Then Katelyn does her writing and reading and when Breanna is done I read her an earlier reader. Katelyn is reading some of them, but only to her sisters when she wants too. She is still a shy reader and doesn't like reading as much as being read to. Think she can get wrapped in to the book if someone is reading it instead of her reading it still at this point.

Course math is going well, and Faith and Life is an incredible religion course too. Science and History we are starting to add some. I like the classical approach, but will probably stay with what I have.
Danelle is doing more and more with us, I think by Jan she will need her own books.

WooHoo, mail call

The rest of the books I ordered came in today. We did the first day of Writing the Road to Reading today, it went really well. Katelyn sat in she is doing handwriting practice with it. She did her reading too, she is doing great. Now Monday, we can start religion class and Breanna can start her math. Good thing we have the party tomorrow or the girls would want to do school work all day. Course I am sure they will want to, but I think helping me with Morgann's cake will be enough to keep their mind of it for a bit.
Danelle wants to do school to, it is so cute, and of course Morgann just wants to copy Danelle.  I am going to print them some pages off the computer.  I really want to get them either Preschool Workbook Set or Rod and Staff Preschool Curriculum. I am not sure which to get, hopefully I can pick on soon. Maybe I will make Tim pick of them since I can’t seem to.

Books, Books and more Books

Posted in School

Well Breanna's reading book got here. I need to re-read it all before starting, it is very different then what Katelyn used. I pretty sure she will like it. She loves writing so how can she not love to read by writing really?
I ordered the oldest 3 remaining books. Just waiting for them to come in now. Although I might have ordered a book not overly needed, but that is ok. It will be good for extra writing practice at lest. Katelyn is finally starting her CCD course this year, so she will be a year behind on her 1st Communion. The other girls got theirs too, so they will start too. If nothing else, Danelle and Morgann will be able to sit through and get something from it. We are going to start adding more extra's in to their schooling too. They are doing really good. Course I need 2 more books and everyone will have everything for the year. They are books that the girls are almost done with and so I am getting the next level now.

School started

Posted in School

We have finished our first few weeks of school and all is going well. The girls are happy, and are really getting the material this year.
We have not really changed material, I make our curriculum up, is it based of
Catholic Heritage Curricula
. I have their lesson plans for each grade; I don’t like their math course, which is the main change. I also do my own PE course.
Course next week I have to have the state forms turned in. So much is meaning less, since we will be moving in a few weeks. We will not be here to turn in quarterly reports or do testing, yet I have to do the paperwork as though we will be.
I am hoping to get more studies for the girls next month. We have been working on Reading, Math, PE and Religion only still. We will be adding Hangul, History and Science courses.  I have a basic outline for the school year, although it will be flexible, based off when we move, when we get the material in, also how well the girls adjust to the increase in course load.
