• May. 8, 2008 - Lessons from Walmart
I ended up at Walmart the other day with all the children with me. This is a little unusual because I quit taking all of them a few years back. I got very tired of saying "Yes, they are all mine!" But for some reason, they were all with me this particular day. I had John-Michael in the cart with the rest strolling behind and as we were walking through the pharmacy section, I heard my sweet little boy's voice say (in a stage whisper) "Mommy, that woman is naked!" I was almost afraid to turn around and see who he was referring to. But then my youngest daughter, Holly, put herself between John-Michael and a display board and in her most serious voice (with hands on her hips and finger wagging) said, "John-Michael, you shouldn't look at girls who aren't dressed modestly." My interested peaked, I took a quick look behind Holly to discover a display for a certain diet pill with pictures of a young lady in what I think was a bikini. I almost laughed until I suddenly heard my son wail, "But I WANT to LOOK!" Which Holly returned with, "It's not nice, John-Michael, to look at girls in their underwear! Don't Look!" Which was followed with more wailing from my son insisting that he wanted to LOOK! Before I could get a handle on things, an older gentleman managed to squeeze around us and I noticed he was trying very hard not to laugh. So were my other girls. I was pretty sure my face was as red as my hair at this point. I moved the cart (and my son) away from the display and regained John-Michael's attention. I quickly explained to him that when he saw an immodest girl, look AWAY. But, I'm not sure he understood - he was still trying to peek around me. And honestly, I think he was more upset that Holly was telling him he couldn't do something rather than being interested in actually 'looking' - but it did give me pause to think. John and I have been training our daughters to both dress and behave in a modest manner, however, I hadn't given thought to training my son yet on 'averting' the eyes - he's only 4! Apparently, it's never too early to start! |

I too try not to take all my kids shopping with me at the same time. LOL I have 4 with number 5 on the way in June. I get that same question a lot and my friend has actually responded before that "no they are not all her's she like to take all the neighborhood kids grocery shopping" I really laughed at that one. I have a 4 year old son as well and you are probably right that he was reacting to more of what his sister was trying to tell him!!!
I enjoyed reading your blog
