Becoming a Heaven on Earth

Home can be a heav'n on earth when we are filled with love

Bringing happiness and joy, rich blessings from above-

Warmth and kindness, charity, safety and security-

Making home a part of heaven, where we want to be.

Drawing fam'ly near each week, we'll keep love burning bright.

Serving Him with cheerful hearts, we'll grow in truth and light.

Parents teach and lead the way, children honor and obey,

Reaching for our home in heaven, where we want to stay.

Praying daily in our home, we'll feel His love divine;

Searching scriptures faithfully, we'll nourish heart and mind.

Singing hymns of thanks, we'll say, "Father, help us find the way

Leading to our home in heaven, where we long to stay."

~ LDS Hymn #298

I've Not Gone Anywhere

My thoughts at 09:55 AM, July 4, 2008

Homeschooling Daze

I had family over, and I also have had some heavy research going on.  I'm deep in the throws of planning my map for next year - and I'm also researching the correlation between health and spiritual/emotional matters, and I'm so excited about both!  So I've got some great blog entries coming up!  :)  If you want to read more about the health issues, I posted it HERE on my Making My Own Colors blog.   I hope it's beneficial to all - I know it's a tremendous help to me!

One of the things I can tell you about next yr is that you're supposed to have a "theme" song to start every day with to help connect them to what they are learning.  This was a no brainer for me.  We'll be singing " Latter Day Prophets " - you can click on the link to hear it.  Although I hear someone has added another verse to include Pres. Monson - I'll have to find that.  There are sooo many things to learn with this theme, it's almost mind boggling - we're going to have a rich year!

Core Phase Happenings

My thoughts at 07:39 PM, June 23, 2008

Homeschooling Daze

Since we're LDS, it's pretty self explanatory that we teach our little ones to pray.  Somehow though one of our twins, Hercules, has never been at a loss for words, and even though you can't quite understand him, the "A-MEN"  is very distinct at the end.  Sometimes we just let him jabber until we hear his "A-MEN", while other times we try to guide things along, such as dinner time.  It's quite cute.

In contrast, Apollo, our introvert, will sit on our lap with a huge grin on his face while we talk - and nods his head when he hears, "A-MEN" coming from Hercules.  Kinda reminds me of Moses and Aaron - Moses ain't much for speakin'.  I hope that wasn't improper...  it's just what goes through my mind when I watch them.  I love having twins - to watch them simontaneously develop in their own ways is very facinating!

The big boys are busier than ever as well.  In the past few weeks I've seen marked improvement with their behavior - they have become more helpful, more courteous, and kinder.  Not that they are perfect robots - don't misunderstand me.  But lately THEY have been perturbed over the messes the twins make, instead of making the messes themselves.  What a nice change!

I have really enjoyed the state of my kitchen as well.  We have had many bitter tears over keeping the kitchen clean RIGHT AFTER a meal - this is very important to Redbeard and I.  In the past the kids have fought us tooth and nail, but the past week has been really nice.  I think it's because Athena and Venus can't argue with each other over who's turn it is.  So that will need to be addressed when the whole family returns together.  For now, I bask in a kitchen done within min. of a meal, not an hour.    :D

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the kids training the dog, or Iris making sandwiches for everyone for lunch, etc.  OH!!!  And it was so exciting when Iris brought a piece of paper and could remember the sounds the letters made - progress!!!!  She has had such a hard time retaining that information!  She was hopping up and down...  and so was I inside.  If I had hopped up and down physically she would have freaked!  lol!!!!!

Til later....

Miss Mary, How Does Your Garden Grow?

My thoughts at 06:45 PM, June 13, 2008

Homeschooling Daze

Today we bought $75 worth of plants and dirt!  FINALLY we are able to put plants in the Earth - we're only planting half our garden that way.  The other half is in buckets, so if the weather decided to have another freak snowstorm, we can haul the tomatoes and peppers into the garage.  Planted IN the earth right now is Straight necked yellow squash, crooked neck yellow squash, zucchini, (we like squash!), pumpkins (yep!  more squash!), watermelon, cantelope, and onions.  We have ever color of bell pepper, including purple, and a bunch of tomatoes.  Although I don't think we'll have much for canning.  Ah well - there's always the farmer's market.

Sorry Mom - we didn't find any heritage plants - maybe next yr.  :)  Oh yeah - and I bought marigolds.  :D

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

My thoughts at 04:26 PM, June 11, 2008

Homeschooling Daze

I'm working on my "Excellent Adventure".  Before I go all foreign, I've decided to first have an adventure in American History.  Not during the Founding Fathers stage - that's for another study period.  I want to do 1800-2000 - I figure that's pretty steep in and of itself.  Maybe too big of a period - I may have to cut it down.  A lot happening there.

SOOOO....  I want to know what YOU would study if you were us.  What is it during that time period that might interest you?  I don't just want to touch on wars & stuff - I want the kids to get a good feel for what it was like to LIVE at that time.  Hopefully this will open up more doors for me in the future.  Here's what I've got so far:

Fashion (Thought of using costumes and Paper dolls)

Cooking/shopping (this is facinating - shopping & cooking changes with the times - ie: depression era cakes & war rations - I found this really cool print out that is a comparision sheet for prices of back then to now)

Space Travel (Oh wow - could go crazy here.  I wish I were back in Houston going to NASA!)

Presidents & Prophets  (Biographies)

WARS

Filmography/Entertainment

Slang  (I get a giggle over "groovy", and I still say "cool" - have you ever looked at old west slang?  It's a hoot!)

MUSIC/musicians

Depression/Dust Bowl

Westward Expansion

Pioneer Trek

Temple Dedications

Inventions

Electricity

Daily Life (you know - washing clothes in 1800 vs. 1900 vs. 1950 - care of horses for the west, taxis in 1910, etc.  Alot of this can be related to geneology, as Redbeard's family were all Yankees...  mine were Southerners and some Oakies - we're the first to make it this far west though..."

Gold Rush

Hair/Hat fashions

technology & effects on daily life (my kids still can't believe there was no internet when I grew up!)

toys (kids are always facinated w/what other kids did for fun)

books written in the era/authors

Church history/RS history

Other religion's history

ecology

women's rights

reconstruction period

slavery /civil rights movement

art/artists

immigration

transportation

I'm just brainstorming at this phase.  That's why I need YOUR ideas!  I know there's a whole lot more...  I promise to give links and itinerary.  I want to stress, this is NOT replacing TJed, or my Master Plan.  This is like a mini-plan, and whatever I don't do will go back on the Master Plan burner.  There's always time to learn more!  :)  I'm wanting to incorporate not only history, but science, math, the arts, daily life, etc.  I really want the kids to learn that together all these elements make up our culture - without one you would not have your current experience.

Thank you so much!!!!

:)  Texasblu

Going on an "Excellent Adventure"

My thoughts at 06:16 PM, June 10, 2008

Homeschooling Daze

On the TJed MUSE yahoo group some ladies have been talking about EPIC Adventures - I looked over some of the work - reminds me of what I did with the states back when my girls were all little.  Someone mentioned that they had done something along the lines of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" - and I admit, that intrigues me.

So we rented the movie - I haven't seen it in years, and I have to say even Athena's eyes were dancing.  I asked them if they'd like to do that for the summer.  I figure whatever lessons we learn while Venus is gone, we can redo when Athena is gone.  Redbeard is off looking for a refrigerator box - if he can't find one we'll just have to build a phone booth, but as I only want to do this during the summer, I didn't really want to go through all the expense.  I thought this might be a fun way to keep learning going through the summer.  :)

Granted, as I look through the EPIC Adventure site - I am really interested.  But it's something I'll need to talk over with Redbeard, and I don't necessarily want to learn what they are learning right now.  BUT, I am interested in her workshop thingy that teaches how to put an EPIC Adventure together.  I personally think all you need is a little creativity, but it's always good to learn what others are doing - kinda gives yourself an opportunity to be inspired.

Anyway - back to the Excellent Adventure.  I asked the girls who or what they'd like to learn about - they left it wide open for me!  So, I'm off to come up with some interesting characters to jump start us.  Of course, there is always my Master Plan to fall back on -   :D  I think it's a matter of applying TJed principles in a fun manner for Love of Learning Kids.  I'm curious to see just how much Athena joins in!
