Becoming a Heaven on Earth

Home can be a heav'n on earth when we are filled with love

Bringing happiness and joy, rich blessings from above-

Warmth and kindness, charity, safety and security-

Making home a part of heaven, where we want to be.

Drawing fam'ly near each week, we'll keep love burning bright.

Serving Him with cheerful hearts, we'll grow in truth and light.

Parents teach and lead the way, children honor and obey,

Reaching for our home in heaven, where we want to stay.

Praying daily in our home, we'll feel His love divine;

Searching scriptures faithfully, we'll nourish heart and mind.

Singing hymns of thanks, we'll say, "Father, help us find the way

Leading to our home in heaven, where we long to stay."

~ LDS Hymn #298

Support for LDS Homeschoolers

My thoughts at 02:21 PM, June 3, 2009

Personal Notes

From time to time I meet Bishops (or have friends that do) who think they have the right to ascertain whether or not a family should homeschool or not. They are mistaken. Here is a copy of a letter sent out in 2000 that was read in sacrament mtg. to dispel all the controversy. Unfortunately, it seems many people were missing that day, or at the water fountain.  Please note NUMBER ONE.

lds church view on homeschooling So the next time a Bishop or ANYONE in the church starts to misuse their authority, you might refer them to this letter.  It has not been revoked.  They have no right to tell you how your children should be educated, no matter what their opinion is.

Personally, I think this is a shame.  Homeschooling families don't need the added stress of fighting those their supposed to look for love and support.  Ah, but the church is perfect, not the people, so we move forward with faith.  Those paradigms can't be shifted without help and inspiration - and who better to do it than a homeschooler?  :)

A Blessing From My Library - VERY LDS entry - you have been warned

My thoughts at 11:12 AM, November 7, 2008

Personal Notes

Every now and then I struggle with my will to be a homeschooling mom.  I know we all do it.  It's not that I've forgotten the great blessings of homeschooling or the witness that this is what is right for my children.  What happens is my former conveyor belt education sounds off in my brain and I start wondering just how great a job I really am doing.  It doesn't last long and I don't get all upset like I used to - that's what's nice about be well seasoned...  you can laugh at yourself.

This morning I went downstairs to my library to pick out a piece of curriculum for Venus.  She finally has reason for learning about writing.  Woo-hoo!  I'm looking in my shelves, just kind of reading the titles, when my eyes lock on a nondescript book.  It's old, and dark green with no cover.  I don't even remember purchasing this book!  It's called, Principles of Teaching by Adam S. Bennion.  This man was the superintendent of Church Schools, and it was designed for Quorum Instructors and Auxillary Class Teachers of the LDS Church.  If you'll remember, the LDS had their own schools - this was published in 1921.  I thought, ""How funny, I've been doing a lot of thinking about those schools and the lessons learned in the book Revealed Educational Principles and the Public Schools."  Then I opened it and read the preface.  This is what it said, written by Adam S. Bennion:

That ever-old question, "How to Teach", becomes ever new when made to read, "How to Teach Better."  This volume aims to raise those problems which every teacher sooner or later faces, and it attempts to suggest an approach by way of solution which will insure at least some degree of growth towards efficiency.  These chapters originally were prepared for the course offered to teacher-trainers in the Summer School of the Brigham Young University, in 1920.  The teachers in that course were an inspiration to the author and are responsible for many of the thoughts expressed in the pages of this book.

The successful teacher ever views his calling as an opportunity - not as an obligation.  To associate with young people is a rare privilege; to teach thiem is an inspiration; to lead them into the glorious truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is heavenly joy itself.  This little volume hopes to push open the door of opportunity a little wider, that joy may be realized,

"Perchance, in heaven, one day to me
Some blessed Saint will come and say,
'All hail, beloved; but for thee
My soul to death had fallen a prey';
And oh!  what rapture in the thought,
One soul to glory to have brought."

I read that and thought, "Oh my goodness, this is a gift from Heavenly Father."  I know I bought it - it's just the type I would see in an antique store and scoop up.  In fact, inside the cover is the amount of $ 2.50!!  I must have bought it so I would have it at the right time...  and the time is right!  I look forward to reading and sharing from it's  pages.  :)

BTW - we go to court this coming Wed for my nephew's adoption,,,  prayers are welcome that all goes well and the judge awards us custody.  :)

Celestial University

My thoughts at 01:31 PM, October 9, 2008

Personal Notes

Well, I got some of the post I promised written, but not all.  I should have it posted soon.  In the meantime, I thought I should pass this info along in case anyone was interested - please take note of the short time you have to join.  If you are LDS (or not) and looking for a chance to have someone to cheer you on as you make and keep goals, then this group might be for you:

Welcome to Celestial University!

We are excited to welcome back the returning students and thrilled at the opportunity we have to get to know the students newly joining the program. Enrollment week will be finishing up in just a few days (Sunday September 12th is the last day to join this semester) and then we will be moving on to Orientation Week. During Orientation Week, we will answer any questions you may have and familiarize you with the various areas of study you can work in and degrees you can pursue. So, enjoy your weekend and rest up for the Orientation Week starting on Monday!

If there is anything I can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask :)

Thanks!
Lara

Note from Texasblu - others that I've sent have really enjoyed the program. If you are not LDS you are more than welcome to join, but be aware that the group is LDS and as such there is LDS doctrine discussed in lectures and discussion questions. However, you might just like to do the goals and not worry about the lectures - I just like to make sure everyone is on the same page. :)

My Recipe Box

My thoughts at 01:01 PM, October 6, 2008

Personal Notes

I have been inspired by Donna and another friend.  I like the way on blogger you can sort your recipes online.  While I put recipes on this blog, you have to read through all of them to find what you want.  It annoys me too!  So while I am STILL BLOGGING HERE (just in case the homeschool blogger team check me out and think I've quit - NOT the case) I AM posting my recipes on Texasblu's Recipe Box.  So if you've wondered why no more recipes, that's why.  I'm adding a few everyday so that it's not overwhelming.

I'll be posting more soon - just getting some organizing done.  I laughed at Jody's entry on TJMUSE - she said her purges take longer than normal.  Remember me saying I was doing my purge?  I'm still doing it in my off time...  almost there.  :)

My thoughts at 03:01 PM, October 2, 2008

Personal Notes

A friend the last two conferences has sent this to me via email, and this time she shared with me the address so I could put it on the blog so ya'll could print some out for your little ones too. She says she emails the packet to officemax and they print it out on cardstock for her. I didn't know they did that! Did you?

So here's the link:

Troubled

My thoughts at 08:27 AM, September 23, 2008

Personal Notes

Yesterday I wrote that I thought homechoolers pretty much study the constitution and work to uphold it.  Then my mom sent me this article:

Homeschooling Surges in U.S. as Parents Reach for Legal Rights

First of all, the audacity of the mass media!  We REACH for legal rights...  like we don't have any now?

I am greatly disturbed by this article.   A Federal Govt law?  Do these people not understand that to do so puts the govt right into our hip pockets and rips away yet MORE state's rights?  Folks, the govt would LOVE to pass a federal law...  and I'm sure those of us in free states will be bound by stupid states in the NE.  I'm so upset by this, I can't even tell you...

And on another note, I was looking for information on Thomas Edison blowing up his Mom's basement.  I had heard that story and wanted to see if it was true or if it was something someone made up.  I haven't found any evidence that he did so, but I did find this article that I found most interesting:

Endangered Species - The Chemistry Set

I had no idea!  Yet another freedom stripped away from us that we aren't even aware of!!!

I know... you're wondering when I'll get off the political stuff.  Just expect it now and then....

Study of the US Constitution

My thoughts at 10:33 AM, September 22, 2008

Personal Notes

I just came back this weekend from a "Know Your Liberty" seminar.  I have read the Constitution and have studied before, but I learned this weekend that I need to renew my knowledge.  I wrote a rather long post on my family blog, and rather than retype it for over here, I thought I would just post the link so you could read it:

Making My Own Colors Constitution Post #1

In a nutshell, I believe that many THINK they know the constitution, but they do not.  I am going to be studying the constitution and sharing that info over there.  I thought of putting it over here, but I don't think those who read that blog will read this one, and it's my experience that homeschoolers tend to study the constitution more than those that don't.  That's a generalization, so please don't be offended.  All I'm saying is I thought it would be of more benefit being posted over there than here.

You are invited to join me, but if not, then I encourage you to study on your own.  Yes, this is on top of what I am already doing - I feel very strongly that the more people are educated about how the founding fathers INTENDED the constitution to be used, the stronger future we have.  No, I do not believe it's over til it's over.  I give you the words of the prophet Joseph Smith:

Even this nation will be on the verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground and when the Constitution is on the brink of ruin this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction.” ~ Prophet Joseph Smith - LDS Church Historical Archives, Box 1, March 10, 1844. Ensign, June 1976, 64-65

Are we prepared to be the staff?  I have a President Benson quote on the other website as well.  For those of you not LDS, I want acknowledge that I believe you are just as important - I don't think LDS people will be the only ones, so please, do not be offended.  I believe it will take all of Christ's followers to turn our country around.  Everyday I see more and more lines being drawn.  I feel that it is lover's of liberty that prepare themselves, filling their lamp of knowledge, that will save our constitution, no matter what religion we are.
