Book Review

I am always looking for neat literature books to read to the boys during our rest/nap time.  This time is designated for getting my 3 year old down for his nap, but also to read good chapter books to the older boys.  A few weeks ago we finished the book The Bark of the Bog Owl , by Jonathan Rogers.  It is the first book in 'The Wilderking Trilogy'.  It was excellent!  It was full of adventure and fun.  A 12 year old boy, Aidan has been told by the truthspeaker (prophet) that he is destined to be the 'Wilderking of Corenwald'.  Being the youngest, he wonders if it could be!? Many exciting things happen,(I won't spoil it) including a scene that will have the kids saying, 'that's just like David and Goliath!'  My oldest son even made a comment, 'When you read the book I feel like I'm there; I can see everything the way the book describes it.'  We have only purchased the first book, but the kids are begging me to get the rest.

One other thing I started this year, even though we have been having our 'quiet time' for quite a few years ~ is including a narrative jar.  My 3 year old is usually asleep after I have read a couple chapters and so we stop.  The older boys get up and we go to the 'narrative jar'.   I got the idea from A Dusty Frame .  The boys love picking from the jar.  I also try to include questions that God has laid on my heart to discuss.  Mainly about heart matters or any application they see in their own lives, any lessons learned.  I would say that this time of reading and sharing is one of my favorite parts of the day.  Maybe it can be one for your household, if it's not already.

But a little fore-warning about the book: Don't be surprised if your kids during your reading and even weeks after your reading are running around saying, "Ha-ha-ha-hrawfff-wooooooo . . . ha-ha-ha-hrawff-wooooooo."  Your kids wil fall in love with Dobro, but no more from me I suggest getting the book to find out!  2 thumbs up in my book!  Oh, I love puns!   My only problem with the book is that we all wished it was longer!  Even though we don't read Harry Potter, I do wish some of the books we read would be as thick and take as long as those ones.  Everyone says that Harry Potter gets kids to read, well, The Bark of the Bog Owl  would do the same.  My oldest wants to sit down and read it.

By the way, we go through books about in a week or two and I would love for you all to share some really excellent books that you have read to your children.  In fact, I might make up a list and share some other great books if any of you are interested!?!

I haven't heard of this one. But I love books. We read mostly historical fiction and biographies aloud these days, since I do our history reading before bed. We just finished CAddie Woodlawn which we all enjoyed, even though my son wasn't excited b/c the main character was a girl. I do lots of classics on tape. Right now we are also listening to Huckleberry Finn and recently finished Tom Sawyer. HF is a rather intense book with some tough issues to naviagate but I think it is still worth reading or listening too. An author I like lots for boys is STephen MEader - historical fiction, high adventure.

Yeah! I finally got a chance to actually sit down and reply - I am forever comingto your site to do so and getting pulled away - I have also been trying to grab the name of the title you mentioned so I could look for it on the internet. Ugh - life gets to be too busy eh?
Love the jar idea but I have too much planned into our day as it is - but I am thinking I will write out some heart probing general questions that may generate some Biblical discussions for our nightly read-alouds and have the kids take turns picking one question a night. I am really leaning towards devoting our nightly read-alouds to the lamplighter series - each one sounds so incredible and I could just buy them one at a time as we finish each one - I just got their catalog the other day - if you have not got on their mailing list I highly encourage it - they tell you which ones are best geared for the younger kids and which ones for older - they also tell which ones are best for boys and which for girls - oh and they also tell which character traits and Bible truths are the focus of each one. I am leaning towards Mary Jones and Her Bible to begin with. It is so hard to decide! I have never heard of this book you mentioned but you always are finding great ones - like the Farmyard Mystery Series - it is still on my to get list for the boys - maybe for Christmas.

Love ya,
Mandi
