We slept late on Sunday, exhausted from the busyness of the past few days. We awoke to the absence of noise, no blaring traffic, no planes circling overhead, no slamming hotel room doors or splashing in the pool. The city noises had been replaced by the near silence of our rural surroundings. If we listened closely, we could hear the wind whistling through the leaves of the nearby trees, birds chirping and much later in the day, the howls of a lone coyote. To escape the heat of our campsite, we decided to explore our beautiful country paradise and discovered a creek meandering through the nearby woods. For several hours we enjoyed the coolness of the shade as we waded splishing and splashing in the shallow water, skipping rocks and trying in vain to catch the minnows darting through the water, just out of our grasp. Reluctantly, wet and hungry, we returned to our waiting camper, already enjoying the solitude we’d found.
