Todays question is: "How do you homeschool?" and here is the link so you can see the other bloggers that are participating and get to 'know' some other homeschoolers.... http://ihavetosay.typepad.com/randi/
We started out, like probably many others, doing "school at home". That meant workbooks, busy works, chalk boards, desks, ect... The curriculum choices, though many, were still limited compared to now. We also did not have the internet or even a computer, for that matter. ;0) I think I ordered a whole curriculum from BJU, or something along those lines.
Though it was good for a season, it was not what the Lord intended for this family. I started to seek Him diligently and He led me to various other methods and materials. We started doing science the "old fashioned" way, by observing and writing down what we saw. Instead of doing lots of workbook pages for writng, we just wrote!! :0) The kids all had journals and if they could not write themselves, they dictated the stories and drew pictures. For reading, we read good books and then talked about them. Yes, we still used workbooks for some things, like math and grammar but for the most part we parted ways with traditional workbooks.
Now we use a variety of things, depending the kids ages. I'm finding that as the kids get older they are needing more structure, especially in the high school years. We try to use materials that are worthy of a high school credit, but we still mix and match things from various places. I have found that "one size" does NOT fit all. That is one of the great things about homeschooling, you can do what works for your kids and not worry about conforming to a particular system. :0) |
