Jun. 3, 2007 - Revised Plan for Ray's New Primary Arithmetic
Category • Math
How much of this is completed in Year 1 remains to be seen. Ruth Beechick's Parent-Teacher Guide assumes only addition and subtraction are covered in first grade, but she also uses lessons I-X, which I am omitting as not being in line with CM's recommendations. Besides which, we don't need the practice learning the actual numbers conceptually that those lessons would provide, and I don't want to work on writing numbers before moving on. I'll fold that into our penmanship work. The concrete lessons on weights and measures will follow the model outlined by CM in Volume 1 and described in a post below.
_____ Lesson XI - Addition 1

Hi Kathy, I am really enjoying reading about your math plans. I used to own Ray's Primary book, but sold it because I just needed something more 'hand holding', I do wish now that I had kept it. : )
My son has worked thru Abeka Math K5 and half of Abeka Math 1, but we're not continuing as it is basically just rote drill and kill on math facts....ummm, no 'real' learning if that makes sense.
I've only just begun CM vol 1 but find the math stuff coming up soon in my own reading to be interesting. I have ordered Singapore math and am hoping that I can tweak it to my own manner to be more inline with CM as you are with Rays.
I'll enjoy reading your blog as we are both getting ready to begin Yr 1.
Warmly,
Dawne

We bought Ray's a long time ago, before we found CM even, so I didn't check its philosophy versus CM's when I bought it. But so far, I haven't yet heard of another program that's any closer to what CM recommended so I'm happy having spent about $30 for enough books to take me through junior high if we decide to stick with Ray's that whole way. But I'm also interested in hearing about other math programs that follow CM's recommendations. Ray's doesn't really follow her guidelines, but so far it's easy to adjust--it's fairly close and it's very simple.

Yes, lots of AO users use MEP, but I've never seen an analysis of how closely it adheres to CM's actual recommendations.
