snowflake coffee cozy

Posted in Knitting

I made a snowflake coffee cup cover a few weeks ago and I was pretty happy with how it turned out.  I only had worsted weight and not sport like the pattern at knitpicks had so I had to design my own pattern.  I was so happy with how it turned out- I thought it was adorable. My mom comes over the next day and the first thing she asks me "Why would you waste your time knitting that?!?" I was floored- First of all HOW RUDE!  And second of all- I can knit whatever I want it's my time I'm "wasting" not hers and third of all- she's had no problem demanding and dictating the exact items she wants me to make for HER.  So anyhow I was quite insulted.  I had made it for when my husband drew names at work- I thought it would be cute to give with a Dunkin Donuts coffee card.  He wanted to take it to work today to leave on her desk for Monday since she doesn't work Friday.  I let him take it, but now I am VERY apprehensive, what if she thinks it's lame?

I love the coffe cup holder!!! I've been dying to make one for my partner in the coffee swap I'm in and haven't had time. Don't worry I'm sure she'll love the one of a kind gift!!! I sure would!

Who cares what someone else thinks? It's a secret Santa little token gift, anyway, and if it is presented nicely with a little gift card for coffee, that's what makes it a PERSONAL gift. ANYone can whip out a little plastic gift card for coffee, but presenting it with a personal hand-knit, hand-felted coffee cup cozy is like saying, "I want you to enjoy whatever coffee you like, and I want you to protect your fingers when it is hot ... AND be able to spot your own cup across a crowded room." it's a SWEET gift and you can be proud. And you can be proud that your husband WANTS to share your talent with co-workers in that way.

As for what your mother thinks... well, fiddle-faddle. Like you said, it is YOUR time and you can spend it any way you wish.

KNIT ON!!!! Hurray for you!

Who knows why mothers can be such downers. Sometimes it seems they specialize it it. Your cozy is not only cute and practical, it a sign that your are a loving, thoughtful person. Keep doing what you do, it's making someone happy.

Your mom sounds like my mom--able to suck the joy out of anything with a single comment.

Back in the day when home VCR's were a newish thing, I started a catalog of the movies I'd taped on index cards with a little review of each movie. I told my mom about it and, just like yours she said "why would anyone waste their time doing that?" Whoosh! The pleasure was gone. I'm sorry to admit I never wrote another catalog card and stopped watching all the movies, too.

It still irks me that I let her have that power over me like that. Your coffee cozy is beautiful and the recipient will love it. Your husband would not have been so eager to take it to work if it was lame. And pat yourself on the back for your clever improvisation with a different weight yarn. You should be proud of yourself.

Tune out your toxic mom and enjoy your life!

Not "lame" at all, Laurie! I'd ADORE it if you made several for me--my coffee is NEVER hot enough. In fact I've been thinking of making some for my daughter & her boyfriend. Now that I see yours--so pretty--I'm convinced they'd like them. And they are unusual, too. Much classier than cardboard collars, much more attractive than those plastic foam things....

I would love to get that~ In fact I want the pattern!
You know, there are just some people like that in the world. I know a few of my family members who would say the same thing. It is simply that they don't know how to knit or crochet and don't understand what joy it brings us! Or how hard it is to come up with your own design.

I am in the process of making them for each of the teachers I work with ( at an elementary school). I bought disposable cups with lids that I'm packing with homemade goodies and a gift card for Starbucks (or the like), with a big bow on top! Nope, not lame, and definately not a waste of time! Enjoy!

The cozy is adorable and will make a great gift!! Mothers know how to push our buttons... probably as pay back for the years we pushed theirs ;-) Besides, the knitting is the theraputic part... the item is the mere by-product!! I am knitting a bed for my neices cat which is taking an incredible amount of yarn and time, but I am enjoying every minute of it!! (I'm sure many would think it is a waste of time!!)
Extend grace to your mom and knit a dozen cozy's just because :-)
